First day of Way out West today. Caroline Polachek was spectacular. A constant stream of bangers, and her voice is just spellbinding. Early contender for concert of the year for me.

Saw boygenius yesterdauy. It was stupid good. Phoebe and Julien (and I guess Lucy) are absolutely fantastic live performers. Immaculate singing.
Will be seeing Weyes Blood in Berlin later in the fall, gonna be great.

Her partner in crime Major Scales is super talented as well. What a great show. Closing song gave me chills.

Saw Beck & Phoenix this weekend. Opener was the ethereal Weyes Blood and Phoenix had Clairo come out for a song too, though I don't know any of her stuff.

Just had Johnny Fucking Rotten screaming in my face all night. After this one song I pointed up at him fucking cheering and he nodded at me. Then after the next song was over I SCREAMED out “MEMORIES” and then they played it next. After another song he cracked this joke, saw me laughing at the front and cracked an even wider smile. I shared a fucking laugh with Johnny Rotten. This has certainly been the highlight of my vacation

Well the next concert I see will be The Speedways - upcoming this week - if anybody has a place to sleep I could be persuaded to crash on your plush carpet while drinking your Vodka and Mr Pibb ......... you really haven't lived until you have had a 263 year old man sleep on your kitchen floor and clog your toilet.....

Ranking my 2023 concert experiences
1. Public Image Ltd - the absolute gold standard of any concert I’ve been to. Standing at the very very front with Johnny Rotten screaming in my face all night. That geriatric old man rocked my world
2. The Psychedelic Furs - I was easily the youngest person at this show. Like god damn the next youngest person at this show still looked like they could’ve been my father. The show was great though, they played all the essentials. This is one of the rare relatively big bands that actually comes to this town frequently so I may see them again when they’re back
3. Echo & the Bunnymen - accompanied by a live orchestra in the Royal Albert Hall. The whole show was them performing Ocean Rain…which is actually my least favorite of their classic albums but they came back out and played Lips Like Sugar and The Cutter for the encore so at least they ended with their best two songs
4. Greta Van Fleet - enjoyable, nothing really special though. This band is pretty frustrating because the guys are clearly talented - their singer genuinely has fucking pipes and they’re guitarist can really fucking play so it would be nice to see these guys really make something original of themselves instead of badly cosplaying as Led Zeppelin
5. GROUPLOVE - this was an outdoor show by the river. I went with a group and we all sat way towards the back with drinks. I couldn’t really hear the music much but I had a good time
6. Raspberry Pie - smaller new band from Orlando that kicked off their tour here in jax at a tiny bar. There were maybe a dozen people in attendance. Got a poster signed by the whole band and bought all their CDs. I didn’t like the music enough to actually do that but I wanted to support the band
7. King Krule - the show was alright but I really just want to erase this whole day from my memories so it goes to the bottom by default

Of the shows I saw in 2023 - there were 2 great ones:
* The Bobby Lees - who apparently will be going on hiatus or breaking up - they were amazing, America's best Rock and Roll band or at least they were.....maybe the best American band in their Bellevue era since The Black Lips in their Arabia Mountain era (2011) and Sam Quartin -a genuine Rock star in an era of bullshit......even their pre-2022 material was ferocious (vid below)
* The Speedways - who basically just bash out one great song after another but don't vary them or anything - they are just cool live - it was just nice to see them tbh. The Whiffs were on this bill too - and they were boring af - I don't get it or them much at all. Their records are just ok......
* Hoping Kate Clover comes to the East Coast or somewhere I can get to in 2024

50 Cent's farewell tour. It was so much fun. He has so many bangers. I was pleasantly surprised by how good the stage production was.

Not sure if I'll see her this time but if you like her - live she's a blast...she attracts some real characters at her shows too.........verrrrrrrry flamboyant and what not.......very camp........I saw her last year but she's got a bunch of new tunes and maybe a better 2nd album.....selling out ....obviously because there's no one like her in 2024.....pfffft

Finally seeing Kate Clover this week........and I have her new album in my possession a few days early too - will review this week Joaquim My severely understaffed job sucks and I could not sneak away midweek to see her in Atlanta. I’m gonna go take a depression nap And I’m probably also not gonna be able to sneak away for a weekend trip to the UK just to see Happy Mondays before they wrap up their tour in the next couple weeks then go on hiatus for the next few years while Shaun Ryder focuses on his other projects

JJ Grey and Mofro at The Vic in Chicago. Great show, I’d recommend checking them out for anyone that’s into southern soulful rock.

I have seen the future of Rock and Roll and it is.........um........totally the fncking past:
Kate Clover walks onto the stage half sneering, half smiling, black shoes, white socks - the girl's a time bomb to rewrite what Rancid once sang.......fronting a band of 3 sharp dressed dudes and looking like she could make them all bow down to her with the click of her fingers.......and they're her band ........what chance does an audience have?
Pfffft
45 minute set split - like the albums - no bullshit, no excess, no wrong moves - alternating between her 2 records but without her ripping cover of X's Your Phone's Off THe Hook But Your Not with some funny double entendre innuendo interplay from her - and she generates so much star power when you're in a room of a few hundred people with her you feel she's a much bigger star than she is and that nothing in Pop music has happened after her (awesome, apparently) record collection.....
