I'm seeing Elton John's farewell tour tomorrow night and am so stoked. I think I got these tickets back in January -- long time coming.

I saw John Mayer again last Sunday and again it was just incredible. Setlist was great, I got a lot of songs he didn't play the last time ( Heartbreak Warfare, Belief and In your Atmospehere to mention a few). But yeah, his guitar playing is just insanely good - I could listen to him just playing all night long. John Mayer is my dude!

Billy Strings. First show I’ve been to since pre-covid. Had a ton of concerts lined up last summer that were obviously cancelled. Was an outdoor show and while it was a somewhat smaller one, it just felt so amazing to be back in the atmosphere.

Phish. Haven’t seen them in over 10 years. Used to be really into them, but that’s faded quite a bit over the last decade. Got free tix to see them and had an absolute blast.

Elton John. Bought the tickets like 2 1/2 years ago but finally got to see this legend. Nothing but greatest hits also since it’s his farewell tour. Really great show.

Wet Leg w/Lowertown-Piece of Shit - the best, most emotional - and least gimmicky song - on one of the year's best Rock albums - is so breathtaking that it obliterates their live set too - though they saved it for halfway into the performance. It almost capsizes the performance - it's literally a show-stopper. The song is the 2022 equivalent of Fuck & Run (Liz Phair), Someday (The Strokes) or Here (Pavement) - a genuine classic indie song - that articulates the life experience and worldview undercurrent within the band and their audience - in an era which doesn't generate that at all anymore in a (mostly, deserves to be) dead genre. A dance party Pop frenzy of a show - that felt like The Breeders crossed with ABBA ........they were terrific and terrifically amateurish too - at several points they were talking and laughing off mic. Also their drummer is exceptional and prevents things from being too cutesy. Played almost the whole record - a couple other songs I didn't know (next album? B-sides?) and a cover song - their brilliant take on Life Is A Rollercoaster which might as well be their theme song. Opening act was Lowertown - kind of blew and made me want to eat glass with their mopey schtick starring an indie Billie Eilish (um)..........they suggested how tiresome Wet Leg could be if they lose their charm, zest for life or sex or their songwriting chops in general.

My Wet Leg concert tonight. Chaisse Longue sounds so sick live. Favorite song of the year already sealed. Case closed. Also I probably like it more than any song from 2013-2017. Pretty good show. Wet Leg seem shy, but they are really fun and musically gifted.

I went to see The Weather Station last weekend - really nice concert, she's fantastic - but since I got a ticket like the day before, I didn't have time to listen too much to her discography, so knowing more of the material would definetely have enhanced the concert experience for me. I also watched Hurula this week (probably the fourth time or something like that). Always a treat to see live, a lot of his songs are great and they really do get better live as well because of the audience. Really strong stuff.
Next up is Julien Baker in 10 days, have been one of my most anticipated artists to see live ever since she cancelled her WoW show 3 years ago. Then later that week it's Tool, which I greatly look forward to as well.

Julien Baker earlier today, and it was fking great. Playing with her band a lot of the songs sounds quite different live, and many of the best songs are songs where there are less band and more focus on her singing. Apart from the songs that were performed by Julien solo, Appointments, Repeat, Hardline and Ziptie were highlights. Her voice is just bloody beautiful. Such a great gig.
Now looking forward to possible Primordial on Friday and then Tool on Saturday. Gonna be some weekend this.

I saw Primordial and Swallow the Sun Friday night, and they were both great. Hadn't listened that much to either of the bands (Primordial just a bit, Swallow the Sun nothing) but it worked really good despite that. Swallow by Swallow the Sun and Empire Falls by Primordial were the highlights.
Then yesterday was finally Tool. If I had chosen the setlist it would have been quite different, but it was fantastic either way. For a band consisting of just one guitar/bass/drum player they create quite the soundscape, hard not to get swept away by it. The visual expreience was brilliant as well. I also like the fact that it has been two and a half years since the album dropped, which have really given me time with it and I appreciate it much more now than right when it was released. Pneuma was the highlight of the show (quite possibly their best song as well) - the riff in that is so seeminlgy simple yet so effective, towards the end when the guitar plays alone and then the drums kick in is just so, so good. Also gotta say that I'm impressed with how well Maynard James Keenan sings.

Fontaines D.C.Not only the world's best band - with maybe the best album of their career (and this year for me) ........they just act like the worlds biggest band - if you didn't know how big they were (which is pretty big) you'd think they were bigger than the Foo Fighters - they divided the set list almost equally between their 3 albums - and the 2nd album - the love it or I don't get it beautiful bummer A Hero's Death (a stunning, necessary left field record too imo - my #4 of 2020) comes off the best - A Televised Mind sounded fncking enormous. The last band I saw live was Wet Leg who seemed nervous and sweet live - but Fontaines have been a band around almost as long in a way - Fontaines didn't cut a full length until 2019 and didn't record until 2018 (though they were playing longer).......but they just seemed to arrive the way that bands used to - defined, full of ideas (that don't often work - and all the better for it), with mythology they are building for themselves in the moment........they never once seemed nervous or scared......they act like you should be scared of them. Grian Chatten in particular is the Julian Casablancas, Liam Gallagher of this era - the one with that swagger you want to punch or hug at the same time....he's not only a great Rock star.......he's great at playing a Rock star.... Next up for me ......... Amyl and The Sniffers in May.......and Lia Metcalfe & The Mysterines in May although that's just to see their smokeshow singer tbh .......would love to see my current Rock star crush Kate Clover .......but she isn't touring near me in a way that I could pull off getting there....maybe T he Speedways will comes to America? That would be nice.....

Finally back at a festival. Attended the Saturday of a Copenhagen festival yesterday, and it had a great lineup.
The first we saw was the Danish pop singer eee gee who was decent enough I guess for the time, and she had her moments.
Then it was Anna Calvi which was the biggest surprise of the day. Not quite the punch in the gut that it was when I stumbled in on Chelsea Wolfe a number of years back, but definitely something I would listen more to.
Nilufer Yanya was up next, which was the first artist I was really stoked to see. Unfortunately it felt like her set was was a bit too short, but she was just as good a performer as she is on the album. Seeing her again later this summer, hopefully a longer show then.
It was then time for Sharon Van Etten, and she was just as good as I could hope for. She really is both a tremendous singer and artist, and, at times, a quite heavy show. The opener, Headspace, was the highlight it was bloody brilliant. After a food break it was time for one of my favorite bands, Slowdive, to take the stage. It might not really be the perfect venue to see them, but they absolutely smashed it. A great setlist as well, with Avalyn being a highlight (just an exceptionally well composed song) together with everything they played of Souvlaki.
Wet Leg was the next act to take the stage, and they were, as their album, decent. They are very charming, espcecially the lead singer and she had some really fun interaction between the songs. Their music, however, is more quirky than good for me and compared to the acts I saw around them they don't really hold up.
The National then closed the night, and I haven't really listened to them all that much, but it was really good. The audience was really up for it as well, which added quite a bit to it. The main takeaway from this, however, is that Matt Berninger is a brilliant frontman through and through.

Just got back from seeing Mastodon (and I guess Baroness as well, but who really cares a night like this). Best metal gig in a long time for me. The audience was really up for it, I was in and out of the mosh just about the right amount for me. The played a lot from the new album, and it's bloody great and sometimes served as great breathers between the classic faster paced songs. The centerpiece, though, for me was The Czar which is just such a tremendous song, today probably the best song of the 21st century. The singing also sounded great, which I have heard divided opinions about before - the only downside being that the sound mixing seemed to be a bit off so that I couldn't much hear one of the guitars (which was a shame since some of the best guitar solos got lost). All in all, a bloody brilliant show and Mastodon truly are one of the very best bands out there today.
Next up for me is one day at the Lollapalooza in Stockholm where I will get see Lorde, Haim and Wolf Alice (apart from Pearl Jam of course, but I will see them a couple of days later as well). Gonna be a good day.

One, two, three posts in a row again. Back from Lollapalooza now, as well as Pearl Jam in Copenhagen.
Lollapalooza was a roaring success for me. Wolf Alice, Haim and Lorde were all great. Wolf Alice was the biggest surprise, so full of energy and the music really soars live - much heavier then on record and Ellie is just a bloody great singer and front of the band. What's even more evident live than on the record is how different and versatile their songs are, from super heavy stuff to much more intimate to more of a punky sound. Ellie manages to sound great singing cleanly as well as with more distortion in the voice.
Haim was the weakest of these acts, but still pretty damn good. Great chemistry on stage and they're just so talented. I missed some songs, but that is to be expected when they do a relatively short show. My Song 5 is real banger, I have to say.
Lorde, then, was incredible. Played quite a bit from every album, very varied setlist. She's a great performer and it really shines through that she loves to perform which in turn rubs off on the crowd. She sounds great, there's some cool production and just about every songs the crowd is with her on every turn (well, I guess apart from her cover of Cruel Summer). The favorites of the show were Green Light, Homemade Dynamite and Mood Ring - but really all of them were great. The only downside is that she should have played at least 15 minutes longer.
Pearl Jam closed the night, and they were just as good as one would have expected. Saw them yesterday as well, though, in Copenhagen and they are even better on their own shows. Vedder is quite the treasure, and they did a lot from Ten which is always welcomed and their cover of Keep on Rockin' in the Free World is epic. Especially happy that they played Garden on this set as they haven't done that the previous shows I've been to and it's probably my second favorite Pearl Jam song. Just a brilliant night overall.

After a long draught thanks to a worldwide pandemic, I've been able to catch a few concerts this past year - and hoping to go to more later on as well.
First concert was back in April with Parquet Courts in Brooklyn. Crowd was hot and they kicked ass. The first opening act L'Rain was, well not my thing, or at least didn't feel right preceding Parquet Courts, but props to them. Then as a special opening act they had Greyscale the Clown perform the PC song "Pulcinella" which was very cool.
Then had a (mini) concert in May to support my buddy's band Deletto as they opened for Tiger Cub. Both did a great job, but obviously I was partial to the opener here.
Later that month I saw Built to Spill have an awesome set. They had two openers - the first being the all girl trio of Blood Lemon, led by B2S's bassist. They had a hard-hitting set and really got the crowd going. Next was Wetface, who was an absolute ghoul in the best way possible. I loved it out the gate, but the crowd was initially split on him, as he was definitely eccentric (think Eric Andre Show at a keyboard). He soon starting winning everybody over though.
Coming up in August I'll be seeing Fleet Foxes with the GF, and hopefully more after that.
It's going to be hard to top my 2019 concert experience though. That year started off with me filling in for my dad to see The Monkees with my mom. Dolenz and the now departed Nesmith did well, although you could definitely feel their age. Peter Tork had just passed away the month prior, but he had a pre-recorded clip of him doing a song or two which was really nice. Next was seeing Weezer, The Pixies, TV on the Radio, and the opener Basement at Madison Square Garden in what was maybe the greatest concert I've been to. Followed that up with Jethro Tull, who like the Monkees, were also feeling their age a tad. The next two concerts rivaled the earlier MSG show with the first being The Black Keys and Modest Mouse with Jessy Wilson in BK and then the next month catching the original Misfits, The Damned, and Rancid at MSG again.

I have seen Wet Leg, Fontaines D.C. and Amyl and The Sniffers in 2022 - all those bands were among my fave records of the last couple years all great shows.......the only oddball concert was the last one The Mysterines who I like slightly but I wouldn't have seen except I went out of my way just to see Lia Metcalfe - surprisingly shy and nervous but a real star in the making.......sexy af....pretty good show aside from her.
They played Hormone - which is one of their very best songs which they left off their debut album.......the crowd definitely knows that song because they popped when they played it......
20 bucks for the ticket ...Pavement coming up in the Fall who I've seen a bunch of times.....

Saw The National again last night - a great setlist of mostly greatest hits with four new songs from their upcoming album in the mix. As usual during "Mr. November" in the encore, Matt Berninger hopped in the audience and walked through the crowd as he sang and, I still can't believe it, I got to sing the final line of the song with him! His face was right up against mine for just a few seconds as he looked me dead in the eyes and lightly touched my face. Can't imagine ever again having another moment that intimate with a personal hero of mine. Incredible night!
