Music / Photo - Kim Shattuck - I saw this photo this AM........this is an amazing shot - Kim Shattuck - holding her hand up to her bandmate to tell him that she can now no longer control her hand due to early onset of ALS - she'd die of it in less than 2 years. This is the first time he's hearing this - she has not yet been diagnosed.......the picture was taken by someone not knowing what was happening in this photo at all..... http://instagr.am/p/B3aQEQXDwe8 / Photo

Rex and sound like Cheap Trick and Redd Kross........tremendously enjoyable.......by far their best release........ Movies / DVD - Old Giallos all week - right in the middle of an insane run of these and especially rediscovered - What Have You Done To Solange (1972)? which is an all-time giallo ...........I think now .........and disturbing af.......... and an amazing Arrow DVD. TV - Wimbledon Finals............ a lot of fun after no tournament last year Food - Well..........a couple days ago I was at Mission BBQ in Maryland and that was pretty awesome and they donate money to Veterans ......so good food and good cause ........and had a lot of leftovers and food to take home........a whole lot of leftovers

Song - Geoff Palmer - "Charts & Graphs" (2021) - A slick, radio friendly pure pop song that is not just good but deceptive too - which you don't get much from a Punk Rock quasi-legend - written by someone I don't think I've ever heard of (Emma Tobin). This song should be on the radio.......in supermarkets .......and on-hold while waiting for a customer service rep.......... the adorable video is all cotton candy and fireworks kisses...... - Album reviewed in the Rate The Last Album You Listened To thread Film - The Mad Fox (1962) - An endlessly inventive, narratively baffling, form busting film that should be discussed on here the way we do Lynch or Heat or something.........when was the last time you watched a movie that actually takes your breath away? - reviewed in the Last Piece of Art That Moved You thread TV - Atypical - Season 4 (2021) - (Netflix) - SJW cringe to the extreme in this final season - like David Pakman & Sam Seder collaborated on the screenplays for fncksake ........BUT somehow it still works in a sweet and open-hearted way ......... mostly because of Brigittie Lundy-Paine who is so real she often hurts, feels and transcends.......she is a classic TV character and in her portrayal. Reviewed in its own thread in TV Book - My Damage - The Story of a Punk Rock Survivor (2016) by Keith Morris - He's important but not in the ways he thinks he is ...........he still has good stories to tell, and part of the fun is periodically stopping and saying "Come on dude...." Food - Well, I ate some fruit this week which seemed like a big breakthrough tbh.......

My girlfriend and I tore through the first two seasons of the reality series The Mole from the early 00's. They just dropped on Netflix and was hosted by Anderson Cooper. I'm not normally a reality show guy, but season 1 of the Mole especially caught our interest, as it had an air of mystery as the players were trying to figure out who to trust and who among them was trying to sabotage the game. Probably won't watch seasons 3-5, as they're not on Netflix and I hear that the show goes through a major overhaul, but the past 2-3 days we were obsessed with this show.

Song / Music Video - Les Grys Grys - Milk Cow Blues (2021) -
The years most unpredictably weirdly greatish Rock album (so far) - a top 5 record through July - and it's not from the US, UK or Australia:
These Frenchmen (singing in English) are spastic, mellow, loud, trippy and go whichever way they feel like. Unlike the year's other great albums (The Speedways, Geoff Palmer, Brad Marino) - their To Fall Down album is not conceptual or eager to please either - they just play whatever they want - whenever they want.
This song - a classic, covered by everybody - most famously by The Kinks - is the perfect distillation of their approach - everybody gets to show off........... and in the video they just LOOK like the coolest band around instead of a bunch of grad students......

Album - Sweet Baby - It's A Girl! (1989) - I've talked about this album before - and how it's maybe the greatest truly obscure Rock record I know of or that I own anyway: a pop song cycle of boy-meets girl giddy hysteria. Not even 26 minutes in its original 13 song format - its insane level of surging delirium suggests The (early) Beatles on (way more) meth and without any ballads because who has the time? Movies - Spontaneous (2020) - Hilarious, and in its own way deeply poignant and affecting satire with more ideas in its script than most movies could ever dream of - Katherine Langford is a star - fnck Zendaya or whoever - she's impossibly assured and and winning here..... TV - Atypical s4 e7 - (2021) - Zahid talking about his balls - extensively - in the Ep 7 opening........ Book - Nausea (1938) by Jean Paul Sartre - Good to re-read when you need to remind yourself what's the f'n point of anything? Food - Auntie Anne's Pretzel Hot Dog - It's an American thing.........a Summer thing.......it's a Summer in America thing.......

The past few days......... Album - The Muffs - Happy Birthday To Me (1997) - No band with a debut from the 1990's (or later) has more albums in my record collection than they do - all 8 of 'em - it's not really close ........and this may be their best one ..........or at least the best place to start with their endlessly rewarding and timeless catalog. Reviewed in the "Last Album You Listened To" thread Movie & Book - Betty (1992) - Claude Chabrol; novel by George Simenon (1961) - Both classics where you notice the unique artistry specifically in each medium and how books are often best adapted by grasping what is hidden between the text.........Reviewed in the "Last Movie You've Seen" & "Last Book You Read" thread TV - Twilight Zone - S1 E12 (1959) - "What You Need" - Steve Cochran stars in this sly, witty and slightly malicious existential story - in some parts, genuinely menacing as played by Cochran .....he is kind of terrific here as a guy who wants and gets exactly what he deserves. Food - Lunch or dinner sandwich of choice - Turkey, Cole Slaw, lots of Thousand Island Dressing, Swiss Cheese from my local deli......

Great ep! "I'm supposed to need a leaky pen?" Cochran hasn't been mentioned on the boards - interesting often intense actor, kinda had the looks of a punched, bad-news Cary Grant tho a very different actor, and died mysteriously at 48. Any fav perfs? He's great in this episode - quite memorable in White Heat - very good in that fascinating noir The Chase - and I like the first half of Tomorrow is Another Day....

Song - The Methadones - Take A Look (2001) -
A genuine rarity - an epic Punk Rock song - that's a big FU to Punk Rock ..........the intro is nearly a minute long (wtf?!?!) about Big Stuff - a crisis of faith, materialism and your purpose - fncking hippie ...........Dan Vapid - the right hand man in Screeching Weasel / Riverdales and many other bands wrote this song and it clocks in at stately 5 minutes .......it far exceeds anything really good he ever wrote imo - he wrote a lot of cool 2-3 minute songs (or less) - but this is his Moby Dick (um)......it's meditative, elegiac and expansive - bordering on pretentious but not really - some of his sharpest lyric writing too.....
Podcasts - "That Record Got Me High" -- A cool album dissection podcast ........fun to hear people talking about the ones they like.......
Album - REM - ...........And I Feel Fine - The I.R.S. Years 1982-1987 (1 disc - 21 song edition) - Not only were they great years, but they were era defining years too.....and this was in an era with several all-timer bands too....

Food : Street tacos, not assuaged by my recent vaca to California (no one noticed I was gone? you jadrools!) Books : Westerns ! I'm a bit into Butcher's Crossing, and ordered some of the ol' fellas - Wolfville (1983) and The Log of a Cowboy (1903) Movies : my rewatches of Purple Noon ("All is vanity - the rest is ash"), and The Birds aka avifaunal judgment day! I like the pauses in these two and how much you may read into character motivations and underlying meanings. They're also really appealing movies to watch, visually vivid, often bright.... movies don't look like this anymore. Other : the beautifully done, immersive paintings of Ventura Álvarez Sala (1869-1919) - the first one with a painter who looks like Pacino!

(Song) Geoff Palmer - "Jammed Up" (2021) -
This song is from his rather brilliant "Charts & Graphs" album - which would be the album of the year if 7 great songs (out of 10) - was enough for that title (it's not but it's one of the years best - definitely)
Palmer usually doesn't share his lyrics but this song has some absolutely great ones and it's fun to try to pick them out - and this is just how it starts (I think?) - in this hilarious tribute to wasting his time and impending alcoholism:
There's a lot of things I guess I could have said a little differently Or not at all There's a lot of things I did I should have regret But I don't cause I like the feeling I get
There's a lot of people out there in the world Pulling out their hair over jobs and girls Taste and money, fool in love I've got none of that.........so I drink for fun (?)
(Film) - Francisca (1981) - One of the great world films of the last 40 years
(Sports) - I'm digging the Canada Open and watching these male young gun players knock each other off before the US Open end of the month

Movies : having a Romy moment, often so mesmeric on screen...generally been watching a lot of French movies this week. Books : paused my spurs yarns bc Jerry Lewis The Total Filmmaker finally arrived in the mail. Very good so far. I didn't know George Lucas, Spielberg, few other talented names, were in the room as students while he was delivering these lectures. Music : the insane depth of 1977 punk especially from the porridged of us - Pink Flag, LAMF, Blank Gen, Never Mind the Bollocks, The Clash, Ramones x2, The Damned x2, The Jam x2, The Buzzcocks, and awesome stuff I've never heard before ever like The Vibrators' Pure Mania. Food : recently discovered and still discovering some more, Almond Horns. this pic is for @tyler and the cattest(?) of us, cheesecake -

Social Media - Geoff Palmer's Open Hearted & Complex Twitter - I talk about this guys music all the time - nobody cares, whatever MAR! - and I could argue he's made my favorite "new" album of 2021 atm ( The Speedways album is my #1 but features only 3 "new" performances - all covers so......) Palmer has never - ever - expressed political points of view or talked about social issues in songs or interviews - but here he endorsed his neighbor - a trans-female for Mayor of his town - who he also supported for city council which she won. I don't know sh it about her, could hate her politics and that's fine actually - he doesn't sell his endorsement hard: He seemingly just likes his neighbor and thinks you might too......there's an honesty in how he endorses her that I found kind of sweet.....it's in his music too.....surprised to see there's more on his mind than JUST beer....... However:Here he is drinking beer - " New England Gangsta" - I have to try THAT! - they provided his "supergroup" which is called "The New England Mafia" with beer since they saw an obvious tie in with these (sorta) legends........he's the doofus upfront with the cap ..... So basically his Twitter page is funny, goofy, involved, maturing .......but not maturing too much....... Geoff Palmer Sep 7 Proud to support @palanaformayor....... of Rochester, NH. Get behind good candidates, get involved, & vote. It’s been exciting to see Rochester grow over the years & all signs indicate more to come! Palana can drive this town in a positive, all-inclusive direction! VOTE PALANA Nov 2nd
