Film: The Godfather Coda, The Death of Michael Corleone (1990/2020) - Bemused (& Amused) by the still polarizing reactions to it and how it gives people a chance to re-argue things they thought 30 years ago........sometimes right, but often wrong just factually as opposed to opinion. Not a masterpiece but still mostly powerful to me and improved a bit in this cut which to me feels definitive - ~ 8/10 Music: Various Artists: Strum & Thrum: The American Jangle Underground 1983-1987 (2020) - Stupendous compilation featuring many acts I don't ever recall hearing in my life (?!?). An important record that forges a missing link in Rock history... 8.5/10TV: Not much......Some random old British anthology TV drama shows on Youtube and the French show Spiral for a new show that people who miss The Wire should really seek out. Song: Over You - The Cavemen - A band I never liked too much, marginally (at most) talented jokesters who aren't that funny but who have come up with one of the lyrics of the year in this song "I need....... some fncking meds"....a left field punky New Zealand stunner/surprise/charmer. Book - Re-reading Nathaniel Hawthorne's Short Stories anthology which are all better than his novel - The Scarlett Letter btw

Oh honey, is: The Godfather Coda, The Death of Michael Corleone (1990/2020) vastly different from the previous version?
I have the 4x disc blu ray set - the last disc being full of supplements. I really hate it went they re-release 'director's cuts' which are only a few minutes longer, as they did a few years ago with Alien because then you are tortured into buying them all over again or left forever feeling that you've missed out on something...

I would say it's just slightly different Legend - a change to the opening scene which makes it flow more logically to me and also the very last shot and the brief flashback that proceeds it. It is ideally for someone who never saw the 3rd film at all and wants to see a tighter cut of it I think imo...........but I like the talk around it a lot, it's all very geeky and nerdy. These are the Rotten Tomatoes reviews which give you an idea that it's arguably better yes.......but also maybe not worth a financial re-investment either.........it's more a fine tuning than an overhaul of the previous The Godfather Part III www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_godfather_coda_the_death_of_michael_corleone

To be honest, I don't remember much of the third. The iconic first with Brando, the horses' head, and the plate smashing scene, yes... the second with De Niro , Sicily and early New York, loved it... but the third is a bit of a blur.

Some of my obsessions throughout 2020: Documentaries: I watched 58 documentaries this year, never before had I watched so many documentaries in one year. I watched documentaries on the most diverse topics and learned a lot of interesting things. The best were; The Salt of Earth, Amy, What Happened Miss Simone?, Citizenfour, The Pixar Story, Side by Side, Waking Sleeping Beauty, Life Itself, The Celluloid Closet, Spielberg, Free Solo, Jane, For Sama, The Edge of Democracy, The Times of Harvey Milk, How to survive a plague, LA 92, 13th, Paris is Burning, Finding Vivian Maier and Stories we tell. I also read some articles about documentaries and I found several interesting ones that talk about why documentaries should or should not be considered a form of journalism, here are some of the best: The Message Is the Medium: The Difference between Documentarians and JournalistsDocumentaries aren’t journalism, and there’s nothing wrong with thatIn defense of documentaries as journalism Musicals: I never considered myself a fan of musicals until last year, in fact, disregarding Disney animations, I could count on my fingers how many musicals I had already seen. But last year I started to get interested in, made a list of the most popular and acclaimed and started watching. In addition to seeing several musicians I saw the mini series 'Fosse/Verdon' about Gwen Verdon and Bob Fosse. This year I continued to learn more about musicals, I watched about 25 musicals, most of them released in the 30/40/50. The best were 'The Sound of Music', 'Sweet Charity', 'The Band Wagon' 'All That Jazz' and 'Funny Girl'. I also watched the six-episode documentary "Broadway: The American Musical" narrated by Julie Andrews which tells how the musical in theater and cinema came about through vaudeville and talks about the most important figures like George Cohan, Florenz Ziegfeld, Fanny Brice, Sondheim, Bob Fosse, Gwen Verdon, Judy Garland, etc. I also found several interesting channels on YouTube that talk about musicals and theater, the best was " Musical Theater Mash" Barbra Streisand: After seeing the documentary about Broadway and musicals and watching Funny Girl and Yentl, I became obsessed with Barbra, I hear 'Don't rain on my parade', 'Where is writen', 'Papa can you hear me ? ' and 'Woman in love' constantly. Expert Breakdowns and Career Timeline: I found on the YouTube channels of GQ, Insider, Vanity Fair and Wired several videos where specialists and professionals from the most diverse areas analyze scenes from films and series that involve the professions in which they work. One of my most recent favorites is this one, where a conductor comments on orchestral scenes in films and series. I was also hooked on the videos where actors analyze and comment on the films they have made throughout their careers. One of my recent favorites is the one where Gleen Close talks about her most iconic roles. Jazz: This year I started to become interested in Jazz, in fact I had wanted to learn more about it for some time. Earlier this year I watched an anime called 'Sakamichi no Apollon' which is focused on a group of friends who have an amateur Jazz band. After that I watched some videos about Jazz and listened to some famous tracks, watched a documentary about John Coltrane and I intend to watch the documentary about Miles Davis soon. Studio Ghibli: Until last year I didn't have much interest in the Ghibli studio films, although I have always been a big fan of animations and have always liked anime. But this year I did a marathon and watched 15 films. The best were; Only Yesterday, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbors the Yamadas, Howl's Moving Castle and The Tale of the Princess Kaguya. I also watched the documentary The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness that talks about the process of creating 'The Tale of the Princess Kaguya' and 'The Wind Rises'.
Classical music and opera: For a few years now I got into the habit of listening to classical music while doing random things like cleaning the house, studying, reading books or even before sleeping. But I never knew anything about classical music. In the past few months I read some random articles on the Internet about some composers considered essential and watched some films and documentaries like 'Amadeus', 'The Tales of Hoffman', 'Pavarotti' and 'Maria By Callas'. I also started to follow several YouTube channels of people who work with classical music as composers, musicians, conductors, etc. My favorite is TwoSetViolin, which is actually quite popular. I learned some interesting things about the topic, mainly about violin and cello which are my favorite instruments. And through Youtube I met Julia Fischer and Hilary Hahn.

Movies - The Happiness Cage (1972) - So-so debut for Chris Walken as a movie but it's a fascinating text based on a play. Watched it a week ago and keep thinking about it and themes in it. David Cronenberg could have worked wonders with this I bet.... TV - Detention on Netflix (2020) - Sort of like Nancy Drew crossed with a J-horror - digging it .....cautiously so far....2 episodes in Music (song) - Sex Pistols - Problems - Well because pacinoyes is soooooooooo "problematic" ....and it has an all-time great nihilistic line in it - maybe THE great FU line, period: Don't you give me any orders, for people like me ......there .......is... NO.... order...... Food - Finikia- Greek pastry/honey cookies for the holidays - goes great with coffee too btw...... Book - Nothing at the moment, which is odd Other - Barstool Pizza Reviews on Youtube - I always love these but damn I missed a lot somehow....like I had never seen the 0.0 one, wtf!

Music: Howlin Wolf's Goin Down Slow, and some lesser known Chicago blues dudes like Snooky Pryor and Moody Jones. Movies: Over the last week, all about Al Freeman Jr and (my usual obsessee) Peter Falk. And how about that double-take John Cassavetes gives Falk on the bus in Mikey and Nicky when he compliments his hands. TV: Call My Agent, pacinoyes thx you bastard! I'm at the 'snapping at friends who aren't taking my telling them to watch it srsly enough' point of obsession. Food: Still need my daily dose of Frank's Red, I'm at the what- cant-i-put-it-on point. Also..... Tiramisu. Other: Australian open (damn time zone, I couldn't catch a match)..... Henley sweaters (I can wear 'em to work or to bed?? Wear have these been my whole life)...... and an odd one, but Kate Beckinsale's instagram... not only ridiculously beautiful but a great wit in plain sight. Check the comments on all her pics, she often wit-wrestles with this same random user and they may make the greatest British duo since Fry & Laurie. Really a treasure of offbeat humor. "She's well aware the difference between a Roman remain and a bit of old loofah."

Lucy Ellis and The Zatopeks - Do The Right Thing (Re****** cover) In the last few days I've posted Lucy Ellis in best female singers.........and as my Celebrity Crush playing live with this same band and I've posted this album too in a review where she teams up with them again on this song .........with an obscure Punk cover: at 2:35 they begin to mimic the talking fade-out of the original song which as far as I can tell is unique to their version in what they actually say: @2:35 she's asked "Are you happy?" - her reply "Nah, I'm fnckin' thirsty" in her thick af Australian accent .... .....I've played this song like 20 times today on repeat......."obsession" ......etc.

And on a somewhat related note, a few weeks ago I randomly stumbled across Perrett, Perry, and Alan Mair playing in some basement in 2019: Only In Betweens and The Whole of the Law posted... but still made me happy.

Video / Song - Melody - by Lucy and The Rats - My neighbor told me her daughter - who is 6 really likes this song when she hears me playing it on my porch while I "work" / simultaneously insult Robert Zemeckis (um) - and that sounds exactly right. Very simple, very sweet, very nursery rhyme basic song - like everything this band does - and it is utterly disarming and Lucy Ellis - that voice - ......... if you get it, then you get it .......and if you don't well more Julien Baker for you I guess .....I love how cute and comfortable she is in her own skin in this video too and she slips in a great line "I smoke under a no smoking sign, the biggest I can find" and then proceeds to steal beer and snacks from a convenience store............maybe my neighbor's daughter shouldn't listen to that song actually......um......bad role model Movie - Insect Woman (1972) - Compelling and perverse psychodrama from Kim Ki-young that is like his The Housemaid but directed by Fassbender and with Oscar winner Youn Yuh-jung in a role every movie journalist should have asked her about TV - "Revenge" - Alfred Hitchcock Presents and "Mirror Image" - Twilight Zone - Vera Miles cracks up - twice......the first time under sexual undercurrents and under Hitchcock's direction.......the second in a bus terminal ......her face, in close-ups makes you feel it ......both times......
