Music (song) - CMAT - Mayday (2023) - First song since her dynamite debut album last year - suggests she might do it again - typically catchy af, smart, campy, exceedingly well-written both musically and in her typically ace wordplay .......it's CMAT in full dance pop mode this time around - which she could rule if she ever wanted to do that btw.....
Movie - Censor (2021) - "My job is protecting people".......Is it though Enid?
Football - Bengals / Bills on Sunday night.....if Joe Burrow wins this game ......well, that would be something, huh?
Food - Taco Bell Double Steak Grilled Cheese Burrito - Over $7 ....it's like their version of fine dining
TV - Well looking forward to looking at Aubrey Plaza on SNL, though not so much SNL......

Music (album) - Ming City Rockers - Lime (2023) - Never a particularly special or consistent band - but they took several years off before making album #3 and the results this time are 11 strong tunes played with a unifying sonic wallop ............it turns out to be the only full length album I really like a lot so far in 2023........go figure.......
Music (appreciation) - Tom Verlaine - The man behind one of Rock's greatest - and unique - guitar albums. RIP
Tennis #1 - Novak Djokovic - the GOAT.......winner of 5 of the last 7 Grand Slams he's been allowed to play in, back to world #1 too .....
Tennis #2 - The Decline of Rafael Nadal - only took him a few months for the wheels to come off, huh?
NFL - Burrowhead Stadium? Hmmmmmm......
Movies (performance) - Andrea Riseborough in To Leslie (2023) - Obviously......

Music (song) - Lankum - Go Dig My Grave (2023) - A stunning reimagining of a traditional song. Perfectly realized synthesis of conception, implementation of dual musical forms and in convincing, cohesive performance. It's a nearly 9 minute masterpiece.
Posted in the "Best New Music: 2023 Edition" thread
Movie - Dead Mountaineer's Hotel (1979) - Weird, oddly compelling Russian film that is part crime pic, part preposterous sci-fi ........lots of good ideas though even if the whole thing doesn't quite work. Probably has a cult following among people who at least like this for its very built-in - and de facto political - premise.
Movie (Performance) - Tilda Swinton in The Eternal Daughter (2022) - Her performance(s) triumph(s) over the film imo - and utterly justifies it.
Petty Vindictiveness - Ngl, feels good to be me these days on MAR - I mean just look at that skunk - not a care in the world......
Djokovic went from villain to hero to inarguable GOAT in ~ 7 months, Harry & Meghan went from heroes to laughingstocks really quick too.......Al Pacino's Hunters season 2 is somehow @ 75% RT atm (?!?)........and if Cate Blanchett can win another Oscar...........I may have to go to Vegas

* Music (song) - The Speedways - Unidentified Live Power Pop Cover Song (?) (02/01/23) - One of the things that makes The Speedways so special - is they make great albums - but also rip it up live (from Youtube clips, I never saw them live myself), have many superb individual songs and they do cover songs as well or better than any artist going. It all gets mixed up with them: I'm sure this is a cover........but it may not be .........it could be a forthcoming original single, a B-side or a future album track.........I can't place it - though I think I owned it (?) and / or have heard it a million times (?) .........or not...... .......it's fun not to know ......and all their songs could be like this on some level...... * Music (album) - Tee Vee Repairmann - What's On TV? (2023) - Best album so far in 2023 - a combination of dead-on garage riffs, cool pop wit and off the cuff common sense - that provides a Jonathan Richman type concise blast of the real good stuff........ if you know, then you know....... * Movies - Love Crime (2010) - Ludivine Sagnier and Kristin Scott Thomas act like stylish reprobates in a logic defying, extremely entertaining original version of De Palma's extremely entertaining Passion (2012)......... * Celebrity Crush - Alizé Lim - I posted her in Celebrity Crush a few days ago .........it got 1 or 2 likes iirc .......so very flaccid of you MAR .......

Movie (performance) - Marie Gillain - L'Appât (Fresh Bait) (1995) - Underrated film - misunderstood performance and film - she's kind of great here at times actually - not unlike a role Huppert / Adjani /Bonnaire might have played at one time Movie (short) - Teaching Jake about the Camcorder, Jan '97 (2021) - 9 minute fascinating short with multiple "takes" on a filmed scene that is sad, scary, complex in POV - has to be watched carefully to fully get it .......horror in a way and in the way film can distort a memory........a very effective puzzle.......highly recommended ........and quite deceptive Movie (short) - The Life and Death of 9413, a Hollywood Extra - Short Experimental Film (1928) - 18 minute visionary film........co-shot stupendously by Gregg Toland some of this looks like it's 20 years or more beyond the release date .........essential viewing. Music - Sleaford Mods with Florence Shaw - Force 10 From Navarone (2023) - Another winner after the political flamethrower single UK Grim with Dry Cleaning's drier than dust Indie Queen of Deadpan Delivery....... Sleaford Mods have done collaborations with Amy Taylor and Florence Shaw recently - what are they scanning my 2021 / 2022 top albums lists for their ideas?

Music (song) - The Speedways - Tell Me I'm Wrong (B-side, 2023) - 3 terrific albums in 5 years ........several definitive songs.........plus a terrific 5 song covers EP ..........now with a new ripping B-side..........in the Power Pop genre that puts you in a special class ........their catalog atm, near perfect. What more could you want ffs..... snaprecordsspain.bandcamp.com/album/the-speedways-secret-secrets-fun-7082Movies (actor) - Dónall Ó Héalai - Combustible mix of movie star good looks, character actor chops, with alpha male gravity and believable smarts / sensitivity - why isn't this guy a star? Movies (scene) - Denzel Washington's plot to kill Banquo scene with the 2 killers in Tragedy of Macbeth - the best acted scene by him in the movie .........and it's odd too, claustrophobic, contemporary and not particularly regal at all ......in a good way.......... Movies - Wheel of Ashes (1968) - Downbeat and striking thematic cousin / precursor to The Man Who Sleeps (1974) - really good and with a religious angle that adds a layer of sadness also........in French, made by an American set in Paris '68 and feels it.......

Music (song) - Molly Nilsson - American Express (2017) - Synth Pop Indie Diva with one of her most seductive - and best - songs....sexy af Movies - The Seventh Victim (1943) - One of the very few movies that mixes crime, mystery and Satanism that actually works - way ahead of its time .........better than Angel Heart - yeah I said it......better than Kill List too ......not kidding this genre almost always fails TV - Cunk on Earth (2022/2023 Netflix) - Painfully funny mockumentary that you think is mocking the History Channel but not really.......it's more mocking you.......a great performance by Diane Morgan

Music (Song) - Local Drags - Heard About It (2023) - Ringing guitars - great lyrics - in 2 minutes + .........this is how you do this stuff ........ Movie (Performance) - Agata Buzek in Reverse (2009) - Polish movie where Buzek must hold you in a sphere of fascinating loose strands - and she does - until the plot overtly connects them - Romance / Comedy / Noir - almost farce ........puzzling in a good way and a very skilled and deft performance TV - Cunk on Earth on Netflix (2022/2023 - 5 Episodes) & Cunk on Britain on Youtube (2018 - 5 episodes).......... Diane Morgan is peerless as Philomena Cunk - an inspired comic creation that was funny before and somehow got funnier, goofier and more specific by expanding from Britain to the whole Earth........ Book - Peter Zeihan - The End of the World Is Just the Beginning: Mapping the Collapse of Globalization (2022) - Utterly terrifying book - by an utterly calm and reasonable doomsayer .....ever see him on Youtube? Yikes......

TV: some Project Greenlight, especially Season 4 on HBO. Series is more of a what-not-to-do reality show around filmmaking where our hosts Affleck/Damon keep making disasters. Lots of fun. Cunk on Earth - brilliant, hilarious. shoutout pacinoyes . "Out of all the bands in the 1960s.... Which were The Kinks?" BOOKS: A Certain Lucas by Julio Cortázar OTHER: old Our Gang short films.... Louis CK's MSG live special and watching every stop of his podcast tour, it really revved me into a ton of standup lately.... Carlin's first specials (his best stuff), some Pryor, some Shane Gillis, Steven Wright, the new Chris Rock, etc. also I can't stop watching Writer's Guild Foundation's Youtube panels... Even for shows I don't like or have never heard of. They're all so awkward I love it.

Movie - Harry Dean Stanton - Partly Fiction (2012) - Pretty great doc about the enigmatic, singular actor (among other things) Music - (album) - The New Brutarians (2023) - Don't Want To Know Your Secrets - 6 song mini-album is maybe their best release and the best introduction to their sloppy, winning noise Music - (song) - Bad//Dreems - See You Tomorrow (2023) - Bracing Australian Punk Rock - political and timely - and sort of out of time too .....one of 2023's most original, densely packed songs Book - (poetry) - Simon Armitage - Paper Aeroplane, Selected Poems 1989-2014 - greatest hits from his first 25 years Food - Well I tried shakshuka - it's just eggs.......but gone mental......

Louis CK's MSG live special and watching every stop of his podcast tour Any particular podcast appearances that you'd recommend? Well the ones he did specifically to promote his live special: Bert Kreischer, Chris Distefano, Theo Von, are alright though they're all well over 90min and some of those guys can get on your nerves but I like to see CK weave around their... uh... egos, pretty much. I'm forgetting whi One recurring thing... CK saying he's taking a lot of time off standup to focus more on filmmaking and wrote a horror sci-fi script w Dino Stamatopoulos (Community, etc) that he wants to film this year!

I'm currently reading Frances Mayes' warm, personal, and altogether lovely book, 'A Place in the World'... Mayes, you'll remember, was played by Diane Lane ( Mattsby ) in the film adaptation of her memoir, Under the Tuscan Sun. In this book she reminisces on the meaning of home, and takes readers inside the two homes between which she splits her time: Chatwood Farm, her country estate in Hillsborough, North Carolina, and Bramasole, the Tuscan villa in Cortona made famous by the film. cherry68

Music (song) Molly Nilsson - Hard Feelings b/w Charios' bride (March, 2023) - These 2 songs were included as an extra vinyl single in a special edition of her album last year - now they get a formal streaming release and hearing them for the first time - they sound to me like the most sensitive, lush, lovely one person band songs playing in Heaven's Sullen Discotheque..........most Pop Art is defined by its specificity - Molly Nilsson rather is defined by her vagueness ......... the tremulous feeling of floating and drifting and almost falling.........I've said this before - she's the cool Madonna ........she's also your weird sister's alternative ABBA........ Movie (Performance) -
Mariana di Girolamo in La Verónica (2020 / 2021) - A deceptive, deeply thought out piece of work - you have to watch closely to really get how skillful and nuanced she is - it involves quite a bit of technique Clothing -I don't wear hats much - usually only if I have Uncombable Bed Head Syndrome and need to make a breakfast / beer / coffee run ........but I may wear my new hat a lot just for fashion...........this is totally my hat now

Music (album) - Local Drags - Mess of Everything (2023) - One of the very best records of this year so far - a triumph of consistency, economical songwriting and pacing Books - Alberto Moravia - Boredom (1960) - re-read If you thought The Stranger and Nausea had difficult central characters - well this book has an artist from a family of some wealth and with a girlfriend (I guess you could call her) and sex too ..........yet is somehow less likable - and less relatable - the more well rounded he is An easy novel to misunderstand - but if you do it may be because there's a lot of you in that character too - surprised it's never been filmed when Bertolucci and Godard have shot other of Moravia's books Movie - Nora Helmer (1974) on Youtube with dodgy subtitles - One those Fassbinder literary adaptations - this time of A Doll's House - done for TV - that like his Effi Briest is so mannered and static it's either extraordinary or extraordinarily dull.....it's something though in how it's staged and shot

Music Video - The Speedways - Secret Secrets (2023)
Love this.
Starting off with Queen Julie Christie talking about their hometown of London and The Beatles .......and then it goes into a witty Dylan / Subterranean Homesick Blues parody so they link themselves to the legends (who are being - as Christie said - "copied" just like The Beatles, getit?) for one of the best songs from their superb album Talk of the Town (2022) .........Lead Speedway Matt Julian has never been so charming or looked more like the frontman for a great band than he does here......and this probably cost the band like $9 total........which is good because Power Pop just doesn't pay......
4 months ago The Speedways dropped my 2nd favorite album of 2022 .......last Friday they released a stupendous new non-album B-side ..........today - this new video.........it's almost embarrassing to be my age - 253 - and raving about a current Rock band.............but nevertheless .......what a time to be alive!

Music (song) - The Photocopies - You Really Blew It (2023) - Snide Beatles-y homage that's funny and sad and nobody even tries for some reason these days.... TV - Beef (2023) - On Netflix - starts realistic then ends with detours into the philosphical / metaphorical (and improbable) ......along with a few special songs, a couple albums (Tee Vee Repairmann, Local Drags), the movie Palm Trees and Power Lines - this is basically all that's been exceptional about 2023 so far........ Steven Yeun steals the show.....
