Damn. That's a heckuva blow. I hope it's not because of a health problem.
In any case, Phantom Thread's profile just skyrocketed.

Let's see how long his retirement lasts this time.

Again? It's sad that he's saying this, but I believe he's announced his retirement in the past before. Given how super picky he is with his projects, I wouldn't be surprised if someone forced him out of retirement five years from now at least.
Still that's unfortunate.

He never released a public press statement if memory serves. He just stepped away from the business and turned down offers.

Has he ever said this before? He's already taken years off and can do a movie whenever he wants. With a formal announcement, I think this is for good.
Lock for a nod this year.

It could be possible, but with Gary Oldman playing one heck of a baity role and with Denzel Washington looking pretty baity too, I don't see that happening for DD-L unless he underwent some kind of physical transformation along with playing a baity role like a real life figure and/or someone with some kind of disability. I agree though that this will definitely boost the profile of Phantom Thread, and should help bring it more attention which can only be a good thing given how the subject matter seems like it could be off-putting to some voters and because of its late release date.

That's just terrible news. Yeah, quite the narrative for him this year (he really doesn't need one ever though)

Apparently Inner City's release date is still in flux; it could come out this year, or bow in 2018. So Washington's a question mark at the moment. Focus Features is pushing both Day-Lewis and Oldman, so it'll be very interesting to see how they play this.

I hope that doesn't last. But if he indeeds retires, I hope it's not just a campaign strategy for the PTA flick.

Sony has confirmed a late 2017 release for Inner City, just not an official date yet (which will probably be Christmas limited)

I don't think this changes much. He's already semi-retired anyway and has said this kind of thing before. Also having a late breaking release that doesn't sound all that accessible and having three lead Oscars just seems like too much to overcome. No one was due or undeniable in the race for his 3rd... I don't see him getting past Oldman or even Denzel a year after his narrow loss to Affleck. I still feel what I felt when the project was announced, that he'd have to be absolutely undeniable to win again so soon.

So assuming that Dan, Gary and Denzel are 3/5 of our Best Actor lineup, who are you eyeing for the other two? Did I hear right that Jackman's film wasn't well-received in its test screening?

Cranston, and either Hanks or Chalamet Jackman's film sounds like a mess, but he should still get a Globe nomination

1st thought: Damn, that's a hell of a campaign strategy.
2nd thought: I hope this doesn't mean every asshole who thinks being a dick is "method" will start looking up to Jared Leto now.
No, but for real, this news really sucks. His tendency to have a gap between projects was one thing, but to announce a definitive end like this really worries me. Hopefully this isn't indicative of anything more than just his personal decision.

Damn. I mean, his appearances are such a rarity that this isn't too surprising. But this is still a huge loss, he's irreplaceable and unmatched. Really can't wait to see what kind of grand finale he pulls off in PTA8.
