Damn. That's a heckuva blow. I hope it's not because of a health problem. I'm worried that might be the case, though I really, really hope it isn't.

Well shit. That certainly sucks if he is going through with it. But its not he was acting all that much to begin with.
Looking forward to seeing him in PT's new film.

Hope he's not serious about retiring. Damn shame. He's an absolutely phenomenal actor.

I've never been impressed with his acting, but it's certainly a big loss for cinephiles worldwide

Obviously this is a big loss to film acting, but at the same time, his work was so sporadic that I don't even think he needed to announce he was done with acting. He could have just not worked and most people would have just thought he was on another break, this one just being a really extended one. It probably would have been approaching the mid 2020s before people even questioned anything.

As you say, Day-Lewis works so sporadically that it wouldn't be unreasonable if he just stopped accepting parts, and people wouldn't think much about it (especially after he said he was taking a hiatus after Lincoln because he didn't think he could top it). But to just come out and publicly state that he's done does concern me somewhat.

Perhaps on this occasion he really just felt a need to be publicly frank so those who admire / adore him could accept that this is it.

If there isn't anything sinister health-wise that caused this announcement, then it makes me wonder if maybe he tapped into something with Phantom Thread that made him really want to take a step back. Goddamn it, did PTA just break DDL?

Goddamn it, did PTA just break DDL? nah, not intentionally at least. It must've got to do more with Phantom Thread's tight schedule or trouble in character transformation more than anything. Had this film been made around the time between Magnolia and PDL, could def had seen that, but cannot imagine PTA being that big a douchebag now.

Oh, I don't mean to imply PTA was an asshole on set or anything. I just mean that with Day-Lewis's intense preparation methods and the way that he's talked about shedding his characters has taken a lot of "detox time" after shooting, coupled with the rumors that the role is a very dark and intense part, maybe it took much more out of him than initially expected.

As I previously mentioned out of all the actors who keep announcing or claiming this in the past, I actually take him seriously here. BOO!

Short version: DDL says nothing about why he quit, just that he wanted to. Which is fine, but did we need several paragraphs to say that?

Can't wait till he comes out of retirement to do another films seven years from now, and claims that it's the last "one".

Love his acting but .........he's a tiresome bore.....everything about the cult of DDL and how he approaches acting feeds into the myth/lie of him....and the interview is completely baffling too - "uncharacteristically inarticulate" - really? I find it quite characteristically so.......his inspiration for career management has always been Paul Scofield - one of the handful of UK actors who is clearly in his league - except Scofield stayed on the stage of course and DDL has always been too tortured for that gig (sarcasm) so all that's left now is the grand exit after all (sarcasm, again).
