Apparently EEAAO editor is a MAGApede LOL no wonder why he wss the only one to win at BAFTAs What?? Edit: I looked it up on Twitter, and it's the wrong guy. The MAGA Paul Rogers is some random person Twitter users found on Instagram and thought it's the editor bc they're both tall white guys with light hair and blue eyes lol
Lmao this is too funny

I can't remember the last time MAR was this depressed. Y'all were more enthusiastic when Green Book won.

I can't remember the last time MAR was this depressed. Y'all were more enthusiastic when Green Book won. To be fair, this has been an exhausting season, even more than usual.

I can't remember the last time MAR was this depressed. Y'all were more enthusiastic when Green Book won. Tbh I think the disappointment has a lot more to do with the predictability and lack of spreading the wealth than the actual (perceived) quality of EEAAO or the other winners. At least, as someone who is far past the point of expecting the Academy to reflect my own taste and just watches for the sake of entertainment, that’s the case for me.

Legendary crank Paul Schrader making David Mamet seem like a youthful pacinoyes Paul Schrader 3h · Diversifying membership, recalibrating how votes are counted, these changes have transformed the Hollywood Oscars to the International Oscars. I rather like the provincial origins of the Oscars: Hollywood coming together to celebrate its own. Most film-making nations--Britain, France, Gemany--have their national awards; the festivals have their awards. Why must Hollywood be Colpo Grosso?
Barry Diller is right. If the Oscars are to save themselves they must return to their origins. The Oscars mean less each year. The reasons for this are clear: the need for revenue compounded by the debt carried by the museum and lowering film revenues and the scramble to be woke.

I think for me the depressing part is knowing that in a few years from now, nobody will legit care about the Oscars.

I can't remember the last time MAR was this depressed. Y'all were more enthusiastic when Green Book won. I don't think the amount of wins helped the situation, since there was a lot of enthusiasm for Banshees and Tar, seeing both get completely goose egged just for the sake of even more love for EEAO, it is easy to see the bitterness increase from that. Additionally in the last 15 years, unless you're No Country For Old Men or Parasite, winning best picture automatically knocks your score down at least 2 points for some.

If it's the EEAAO avalanche he's targeting here, that's a 100% American movie and 95% American phenomenon. It's about as "Asian" as Clint Eastwood's Iwo Jima. AMPAS growing more international probably gave us those Colman, Parasite and Hopkins wins. But the EEAAO fiasco seems to be the result of (mostly) American voters - BAFTA, AACTA and (to a lesser extent) HFPA rejected it in various ways.

The real dumb thing about Schrader's argument is that he appears to be arguing that the Oscars should save themselves as a TV show by... nominating American movies? Because that's going to turn viewership around? I'm sure if American tech people had gotten all of those AQOTWF awards they would have doubled their viewers.
Paul Schrader (PAUL SCHRADER!) is arguing (or hiding his actual problem beneath the guise of arguing) for pandering to stupid people for the sake of a rating. The Oscars are a game to promote movies, anyone arguing for them from the point of view of the TV number is looking at them wrong in the first place. Is Schrader a TV guy now?
The idea that they should focus exclusively on American productions is certainly fair enough, that is basically what everyone else does (you could do a separate rest of the world awards like the Australians do) but when your goal is to conquer the whole planet you have to take the by-product of what comes with it.
