Letterboxd is pretty much exclusively a film nerd thing, though, that's not indicative of popular preferences. Phhft, as opposed to this board?? 🤣 This is as much film nerd central as Letterboxd is, except those nerds are less snobby. I wasn't disputing that this board is out of touch, although as I noted I don't think the "out of touch" argument works with EEAAO which is the GP is indifferent to as opposed to it being actively disliked here. That's splitting hairs.

You were bringing up box office earlier, and The Whale has grossed a third of what EEAAO has. Yes and still people know it more than EEAAO

Sorry bro, ur movie gonna die of irrelevance Look man, idk about the people you know but I'm not buying it as a great gauge of general popularity. Either box office matters like it did with Top Gun and Avatar or it doesn't. And EEAAO made more over Easter weekend than The Whale could manage the entire month it went wide.

Yes and still people know it more than EEAAO It actually has struck me that a lot of the people I know are either wanting to or had seen the Whale, due to Fraser alone. I never realized how much love he had. EEAAO seems to be a bit more popular w the younger/POC crowd from my own anecdotal experience.

I think the winners were pretty deserving overall but the constant cutting off of the speeches especially in the technical and short film categories really ruined it for me. Particularly grating to see such happy faces not able to properly have their moment. I don't think I'll bother with the oscars anymore really.

They need a better, defined process for multiple winners. The time limit is never enough. I get that you can't have 6 people speak for every award but at least 2 people should be allowed.

My favorite moment was Andie MacDowell and Hugh Grant, together again. They’re both as gorgeous as ever to my mind.

I think most film fans will be fine with the idea of her having one given Halloween, True Lies, and even Freaky Friday. Might not be fine with this being her one, but unless Condon goes on a run and never wins, I think JLC will get a pass. Bassett would be the one people would be sad for but idk how much passion there is for her in a post- Endgame MCU movie. Yeah, I think once the discourse settles a bit, people will be overall happy that Jamie Lee Curtis (who was one of the original poster children for genre bias) won an Oscar for a performance that is actually pretty out-of-control, even by that film's standards. She packs so much into her screentime and it's such a deceptively rich performance for a character that didn't need to go that hard for. I think she'll be comparable to Beatrice Straight: not on the level of her co-stars and will likely have people thinking a close competitor won (like a lot of people do for Piper Laurie or Jodie Foster), but still a good performance. I personally think it's amazing she won an Oscar the same year she gave a performance where she method-acted a suicide to trick a potential murderer she had no idea was in the house with her . I guess this just feels more like the devil's advocate take to me. I haven't seen swaths of people talking about JLC's perfomance like this. It's a movie that a bunch of film fans are gonna wanna throw tomatoes at for awhile and Oscar trivia always makes that easier, but fewer people are gonna wanna fuck with Yeoh or Quan. JLC is Hot Dog Fingers, she's more representative of the kind of thing that's easy to loathe about this movie and also frankly she's the most convenient to dismiss in the cast. I think there's even disappointment from big fans of the movie that it was her that won and not Hsu. I think it's fun that Jamie Lee Curtis is an Oscar winner but it's not like getting her a career Oscar was a drum I ever heard banging that hard and now everyone's breathing a sigh of relief, like Gary Oldman or something.

I’d expect this from Twitter but not even stuff like Elvis or Fablemans siphoning off a few wins would’ve salvaged this

On twitter and reddit - two websites with far larger user bases - Stephanie Hsu is their favorite. They also hate de Armas and Blonde so I guess their taste is not all bad.

Edit: I looked it up on Twitter, and it's the wrong guy. The MAGA Paul Rogers is some random person Twitter users found on Instagram and thought it's the editor bc they're both tall white guys with light hair and blue eyes lol

Winners were mostly fine with some bad ones mixed in, pretty par for the course. Really happy for Quan and Fraser, even if they weren’t my personal winners they were both so easy to root for. Pretty bummed Banshees was shut out but it is what it is.
