The Whiffs Wanted
3rd song from maybe "the" American Power Pop album of 2023 - coming soon. Another winner - and the singing with cracked voice mucking up their pristine pop is a welcome sign for a band that always seemed a bit too academic before.
3rd albums in Power Pop often result in an artist's "best" studio album - Matthew Sweet, Material Issue, Big Star, The Speedways (arguably) - it's usually when it dawns on you that you ain't making a fortune playing this stuff.....God Bless 'Em

CMAT MaydayOh look, another act that pacinoyes broke on MAR - if good music taste was sex appeal then this dude would be Kay Adams ffs Last year's best lyricist (#6 pacinoyes album too - and that list is MAR's list ) - now links awful natural dsasters (fires, floods) with her poor romantic fortunes God Bless Her.....this is verrrrrrrrrrrr-y far removed from her Nuevo-Country-Ironic-Cabaret stuff .......... and finds her diving all the way into Disco Club Dance-Pop ....as usual it exudes wit, idiosyncratic flair and intelligence in the way you don't get in this genre....at all. How many great songs have there been like this one in the last few years ........Olivia Rodrigo's Good 4 You and .....maybe something by her pal Charlie XCX ........but CMAT doesn't sell sex like those 2 .......she is the voice of Nuevo-Pop-Ironic-Feminism tbh..... Her fanbase - which looooooooooooves her to Death and includes trendy club kids and non-trendy traditionalists - will refer to this as her "banger" song or some such thing - though pacinoyes just refers to it as another winner......

Sleaford Mods UK GrimOne of the best singles bands of the last 15 years - albums not so much - in short bursts though they are exhilarating and searing......every album contains 2 or 3 stunners.......last time out they made a fine album but their epitaph will always be singles .......at an album pace they wear you out ......in singles though they stoke you up Also, nobody curses like them in songs except maybe NOBRO What a week already - new CMAT (see previous post) and now this!:

Oh yeah, I'm in a good mood today. It's new The National day! New album First Two Pages of Frankenstein slated for release April 28 (track list leaked last week btw, now officially confirmed - featuring band besties Sufjan Stevens, Phoebe Bridgers, Taylor Swift) and first single released. Tropic Morning News is a great choice for the first single - my favorite of the tracks they debuted live last year. They played it when I saw them last summer and it was a highlight of the show. Huge improvement over Weird Goodbyes though like that song, I don't love the production on this one - the drum machine and that light vocal effect which both kind of serve to dull the band's two greatest assets. But the guitars, the lyrics, its general propulsive momentum all build to a pretty awesome as hell sound. JangoB

lil yachty did a complete 180 in sound and although i know it’s only the beginning of 2023, has likely made one of the best psychedelic albums of the year
mans took such a huge swing with this. seen a comment that said “this shit sounds like tame impala took the wok to lollapalooza” 💀 perfectly sums it up

Tee Vee Repairmann People (Everywhere I Go)
2nd song from this album coming in 10 days - and the 2nd winner in this thread - this guy plays (on this record anyway) very Black Lips / Jonathan Richman sort of simple, short, chugging guitar Pop over bashed out riffs and recurring melody lines......there will be 12 songs on this album (due in 10 days) and I would be surprised if he messes with this formula in any way - because, it's a winning formula isn't it?
We've had 1 real good old school Punk EP (The Circulators) and 1 tight trashy full album (Ming City Rockers) in January as my faves so far this year......in theory this should equal those.....we'll see......

Coach Party Micro Aggression
I've talked about his band - a lot - not eactly a "great" band - but one with a big upside - some of their work is among the best of the 2020s Indie Pop ( Bleach, Can't Talk - Won't, Everybody Hates Me)........and they have a lead singer - Jess Eastwood - who is a (small time) star already........a very strange band that is hit or miss - sometimes in the same song ......... and who is being very deliberate about making an album

Sleaford Mods Force 10 From Navarone
One of the best singles bands of the last 10 years........ one of the few political bands that is actually great across their singles (albums tend to wear me out) and teaming up with Dry Cleaning's awesome - on their last album anyway - Florence Shaw (pacinoyes #7 album of 2022) - the 2nd single of theirs in this thread.....

The Speedways Tell Me I'm Wrong (B-side)
Worlds best Rock band - non-Fontaines D.C. division - does their first non-album/non-cover song B-side.............and it's totally awesome. I posted this song done live last week and said I didn't know what it was..........a cover I thought.......but.......nope........not a cover......the A-side is from their superb Talk of the Town album (2022) my #2 album of last year......... Link to the song below..........this is one of the great bands in the Power Pop genre.........ever....... snaprecordsspain.bandcamp.com/album/the-speedways-secret-secrets-fun-7082

Bad // Dreems See You Tomorrow
"Riding the chalk / Lock all the doors / Ordering chaos...........Seeya tomorrow!"
This band has been around - and been good - for a while ........... but have hit their relevant peak here:
Doing a stream of consciousness talk / singing - offhand about and using world history, war, colloquial conversational slang, comic asides and dark hard to completely discern references - this song is the sound of the world falling apart.
Casting a huge referential net - satirical to social media, media in general, the past and present, dumbed down (and scary) humans, big business, numbing creature comforts, authority, with threats from everywhere........ with death from everywhere too - it's amazingly coherent as a piece of music.........while seeming to be throwing its punches wildly........in less than 3 minutes.........
Evoking the immediacy of The Minutemen, Sleaford Mods, Dry Cleaning - among others - into something only describable as Punk Rock - specifically Australian Punk Rock - while also being recognizable in whatever country you happen to live in as a kind of recurring repetetive status report........there's a lot to unpack in this dense, complicated song
An original, ripping single:

The Beths Watching The CreditsA band picked by pacinoyes for 2022's most "underrated" music - it's actually an existing thread (Overrated / Underrated 2022) that went nowhere ffs - that rare band that pacinoyes and Pitchfork Hipster Writers can both agree on......... so there's hope for the Middle East I guess ......she writes ace Pop songs ......sort of like the way Alvvays does also - who I put in the same thread as "overrated" - but this overrated / underrated thing is pretty complicated innit?.....

Atmosphere, who are, since the early 00's, one of the best acts in the hip-hop scene for me are releasing a new album this year. This song is from that upcoming album and it's absolutely fantastic, definitely up there with some of their best work:

CMAT Whatever's Inconvenient
No one can touch CMAT as a lyricist these days - and this is CMAT showing off - dipping and weaving pieces of overt camp, real heartbreak, theatricality and pop-culture scrap references so deftly she is utterly singular atm - Lily Allen is sort of her precedent - and more original than any act making Pop records in 2023.
She IS David Bowie in 2023 - as a Broadway Faux (Real?)-Country Star of Her Own Universe
Her whip-smart debut was my #6 album last year.......... and she is showing zero signs of a sophomore slump.........and yeah a line here is marvelously :
"You'll never be Mark E. Smith"

The Hives Bogus OperandiTheir first new music in .......10 years? Longer? ..........and they don't miss a beat ......because the last 10 years of Rock and Roll have been about Dad Rock and sweaters and Girl Feelings and intense depression and shit....... Smoking hot song.......and also it's funny

Country Westerns Hell
Best song on a fine new 2nd album that sounds like CCR if they grew up on Garage Punk ......sounds like Tom Waits singing in a Rock band too .....I'll take this over anything Wilco has done in 20+ years.......or The Old 97s since Too Far To Care .....
