The Speedways In Common With You '23Not a "new" song but a new version of it - re-recorded from the one man band original 2018 version when Matt Julian played everything - and made more well rounded and full - with the whole band now ..........on a great album - it may be a "10/10" - I rated it ~9+ ........ The Speedways - Triple Platinum - a tight af 12 song compilation from their 3 albums. The Speedways - my fave current band and maybe the best too ( Fontaines D.C. are at least close and are on a different "big time career" level) - now resemble a coherent whole - each member getting screen time - not just leader Matt Julian....they resemble - like almost all great Rock bands from The Beatles though The Libertines - a gang...... THey also resemble a band with extremely good taste and attitude - Julian wears his own band shirt.....tthe guitarist a Thin Lizzy one and the drummer has a Thunders / Heartbreakers shirt.......

NOBRO Who The Hell Am I?
Want to know a trick to making an ok song a great song?
The lead singer of the awesome NOBRO - Kathryn McCaughey - knows how to "push" a lyric - the way she inserts "yeah" into the half second musical space after "going out of my mind" is what transforms it - without that little nuance it's just repetitive and generic ..........with her expressing everything that the word "yeah" encapsulates........among other little touches - it becomes marvelous Rock and Roll.
Yeah

Kate Clover No More Romance
Kate (The Great) Clover made my #4 album of 2022 with her near faultless debut - Bleed Your Heart Out - a loving recreation of New Wave circa 1982. I said this about it:
"Clover knows what works and what doesn't - for her tastes, this genre and for your tastes too - it doesn't play as calculated, it plays as on point."
No More Romance - her excellent new single keeps her hot streak going and like everything she's done so far seems almost preordained - like she couldn't not have made it.......she also, predictably looks and dresses great.......

The Clockworks Deaths and Entrances
For any other band this would be their masterpiece - to them it's just one of the 3 or 4 best songs on their debut.....which is out today

The Smile Wall of EyesNew album Jan 24 ........ countjohn who digs the band iirc......... .PTA directed btw Didn't know about this, guess I need to keep a closer eye on the Radiohead reddit. Cool video since it's PTA, laughed at what appeared to be the "drunk Thom" amongst the figures at the end. I liked it but I hope they don't go with the acoustic sound like that for the whole album (but liked the weird strings which was an element they did not explore on the first album). You Will Never Work in Television Again was such a killer first song for the last one that showed he was back to making rock music and I liked that they had the jazz fusion tracks too. Like that Thom is making "band" music again but you have to wonder if there's a specific reason he's not doing it with Radiohead.

Sprints Shadow of a Doubt
The heaviest current band I like at all - part Sonic Youth, Part Pixies, part meeting with your therapist......they are very much like a metal band imo except a lean artsy one ........their proper debut album in January ....so far so good .....but not as good as their compilation album of singles & EPs "The Back Catalogue LP" (my #9 album of 2022).......they may have already peaked?
We'll find out......

The Vaccines Sometimes, I Swear
Long time singles specialists who made one of the 2010s decade best (and saddest) singles (Post Break Up Sex) with a stellar new song from a new album in January 2024
Kind of sounds like The Cribs .......and that's a good thing........

New Math Johnny's On TopThis is an old song - but it was unreleased until 2023 - and it's pretty great tbh.......sounding a bit like Jim Carroll's People Who Died and far more punky than their usually slicker New Wave style.......ya never know.....and the album Die Trying & Other Hot Sounds 1979-1983 is pretty good too......... after sitting on the shelf for ~40 years
