Grian Chatten Fairlies
From an upcoming solo album from Fontaines D.C. frontman which is sort of like Jagger cutting a solo record in 69 or Strummer in 80 - this sort of thing isn't usually done by the leader of the best band going (non-Speedways division) ........he's already done a stellar Nick Drake cover with Fontaines in 2023 and this solo album is due in the Summer
There is no more distinctive, poetic singer in Rock - and he's smart enough not to go for the home run every time - small, delicate, low key......exceedingly smart - and smartly sung - "expired on the stairs" jumps out at you because of his vocals so does his repetitive effect of the word "alone" which is to his singing - a trademark - what a vocal flourish once was to Morrissey.......or a sneer to Liam Gallagher
He has yet to mess up - on 3 dazzling Fontaines albums since 2019 .....he's just 28.....and already making the case as THE Rock star of our era.....he's one of the few guys - certainly in Rock and Roll - who has created a body of work - not just a single song or 1 album - in the MAR era that you don't have to feel embarrassed to call "great" in its total artistry

CMAT Have Fun!
In her previous song CMAT - the Queen of Camp Country and a singular artist - she isn't just the best at what she does - she's the only one who does what she does .......dropped a great random line: "You'll never be Mark E. Smith" ........this time she drops this:
"Five hundred and ten quid before bills out my purse Dublin back then was cheap, but it's never been worse I gave you all I had 'cause I believed in nests Silly bitch..........You should have spent it on yourself"

Grian Chatten Last Time Every Time Forever
Dropped today - the poetic frontman of the worlds best band (Non-Speedways Division, duh) at his most poetic and haunted......another winner and a challenging one with a vocal shift about half way through out of nowhere that never comes back again and an ominous droning ending.......

Brad Marino Ramones and StonesLyric of the year contender: "Turn the volume up to 10 / just don't play Pet Sounds again / I don't need that crybaby ......shit / (Give me) Gimme Shelter and (Gimme) Shock Treatment"Now I like Pet Sounds - a lot - but the way this board pounced all over me for saying it's overrated (it obviously is, it's not close to "the greatest album of all time" - and you know it too) - now......go to your room and think about what you've done

Sprints Adore Adore Adore
Along with NOBRO and The Clockworks - one of the 3 bands who released pacinoyes™ raved EPs in 2022 but have not yet released a debut album - this is Sprints first new music of 2023:
.........and it doesn't disappoint.......feral, with hairpin turns and shifting dynamics, and their trademark:
Using repetition better and more cleverly than any current band aside from their Irish peers (the Godlike) Fontaines D.C. - mixed with Sprints usual lyrics of brutal self-assessment - it's Therapist Rock .......
A mix of Metal's roar, Art-Rock's coolness patina, Punk's immediacy - all with hooks - very few bands have songs that lodge in your brain like Sprints ....

The Hives Countdown To Shutdown
One of the great Rock and Roll live - and singles - bands of the 21st century - albums aren't their thing so much - with the 2nd kick-ass song from their first new album in 10+ years.
When they play their West Coast US dates later this year - the great Kate Clover is their opening act - damn.............now that's a show to see......

Grian Chatten All of the People
Rock's most charismatic frontman, of Rock's best band (Fontaines D.C.) - and with a debut solo album dropping in 2 days - releases a poetic, dour, isolationist and austere piano ballad single - that replicates the whole arc of Big Star's masterpiece (they have 2) Radio City but in 1 song - misogynistic (in a "good" Rock and Roll way), anti-people or at least anti-romance and then flipped at the end (Morpha Too, I'm in Love With a Girl)
Quite a surprising turn.....the lyric sheet is particularly striking........look it up .......you'll see.........

CMAT Where Are Your Kids Tonight?4 songs in 2023 - 3 of them on the album (but not Mayday apparently?) all 4 in this thread too .......she doesn't really miss much does she?......This time she's sort of like what Bonnie Tyler would have been like in 1986 if she was Sheena Easton and both of them were better lyricists and more self-aware .....

So, queen Carly Rae released a new record this past Friday - The Loveliest Time.
I think the album has a somewhat slow start, even though Kamikaze is probably the strongest track on the record, a real Carly banger. But to me the album picks up around Shy Boy and then mostly is very good throughout. Lot's of great production and vocal melodies in this project. Kind of a reverse The Loneliest Time which is very strong at the start and tails off quite considerably as it goes. The Loveliest Time is a really good addition to Carly's discography.

The Clockworks WestwayTheir first new song in some time - album on Nov 10th - the most eagerly anticipated debut of the year - by far - and we have debuts coming from NOBRO and Sprints ffs so that's saying a lot.........I gave this band's EP a 9 /10 last year........who gets a 9 / 10 for an EP anyway from pacinoyes ........this band is THAT great - not just that EP but a bunch of singles to go with it........ They are not just great......they are FUCKING GREAT.....and I never heard them until last December - a huge miss for me........ the key is they are dazzling in their diversity - they sound like a band on their 4th album........this song is gorgeous and I never say that about Rock bands - and they can Rock hard too.....you'll see TheAlwaysClassy who iirc liked one of their singles I posted ......

A lot of great stuff so far this year. Kalmah, Insomnium and Enslaved have released new albums which are pretty good, but my two favorites so far are Reader Of The Runes - Rapture by Elvenking, which is a huge step up from their last, very disappointing, effort, and probably in the top 5 of their discography and Kob by Arkona, which is pretty masterful black metal, although it doesn't reach the heights of their previous work, Khram, which is among my all time favorite albums.
But my favorite song so far this year is The Scent Of Dead Leaves by Rage Of Light which is just a single and not included in any upcoming album that I know of, which is a shame really because the band's album Redempion from 2021 was great and this song is just addictive. Can't stop listening to it.

NOBRO Let's Do Drugs
The Clockworks released a majestic, epic new song on Wednesday.........and today NOBRO released this wildly exciting one.......it's a helluva week for shit I like, huh?
pacinoyes rises!............what a single this is! The guitar solo sounds like something Fast Eddie Clarke would have played.......possbly the hardest rocking, while still accessible all female band .........ever? I said that when I reviewed their 2 EPs.........still true
"I don't believe in anything no more ............it's all been downhill since I turned 24"

The Paranoid Style I Love The Sound of Structured Class
The 3rd ace political single this year (!?!) after Sleaford Mods marvelous UK Grim and Bad // Dreems with See You Tomorrow with strong lyrics - and its title swiped from Nick Lowe's I Love The Sound of Breaking Glass with additional lyrical nods to Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, Highway 61 and Sympathy For The Devil......by far their best song and they were always good too
Sittin’ on the back bench Sipping a martini Thinking "life’s a wrench" Thinking "life’s a dream” Hanging out in Houston Waiting on a tip Sowing the confusion So the package gets shipped
So many deliveries In so short of time So many miseries In the traffic line
Don't give me the burden of gift-wrapped china Don't give me the inheritance of crystal glass Don't give me advice, don’t give me a shiner Don’t give me breakfast Don't give me your sass
Call your local precinct Put a call through to China All the preachers from your colorful past All the privileged discretion and that certain aggression Do you love the sound of structured class?
Sittin' on the front porch Still waiting on the lifeline From the kind of folks Who share opinions like mine I’ve spent time in education I’ve spent time in jail I’ve drunk from the river basin I have skied in Vail
Time in capsules, Vitamin C Everybody knows this is nowhere but me Everyone knows this is Valhalla or bust An unliving will and a living mistrust
Sympathy for the devil Is the last of your concerns Bow down to your level And attend to your burns I have seen strong men crying out for help I have pulled books from a very high shelf The next time you call me Make sure it's important Withering on the vine Living by appointment Everyone’s outnumbered and no one has a pass I love the sound of structured class
Sitting on a goldmine Sitting on a fence Forty thousand transgressions And no defense
Poor Highway 61 Spread out like a rash I love the sound of structured class
Do you love the sound of structured class? Do you love the sound of structured class? Do you love the sound of structured class? Do you love the sound of structured class?

CMAT Stay For Something
Her least gimmicky - and maybe her best song of 2023 so far - and her gimmicky ones were mostly wonderful anyway because she's just that damn good isn't she?

Sprints Up and Comer
The best of the 3 songs already released that will be on their debut - Letter To Self, Jan 5th 2024 - 11 new songs, none from their previous - and fantastic - singles / EPs - available on the shit hot compilation Back Catalogue LP (2022) which has all of that stuff......very much a definable, specific sound already ....... this band - yet another impressive Irish band - is by far the heaviest band in my playlists these days........

The Clockworks Mayday MaydayLook man - I can't do anything more to make you hip - not with that haircut and when you are wearing those clothes ffs - than to repeat, yet again that this is by far - the best band in the world without an album yet........I've tried to get you into this band but you, alas, don't like Rock and Roll......and ignore me....... and would rather debate Margot Robbie's range (lack thereof) ffs One of the most anticipated debut albums of the last ~ 20 years - comes out November 10th - up there with The Strokes, Libertines, Franz Ferdinand, Long Blondes, Arctic Monkeys, Fontaines D.C, and Wet Leg.......I'm not calling it a "can't miss" but all those other albums were pretty great weren't they?

CMAT California
Pop music's best current lyricist - I said current as in makes records all the time, not Bob Dylan ffs - unleashes this new album's "Nashville" which was one of last year's very best - and so is this one - and her best song of 2023 but she keeps topping herself........Country music, new camp cabaret, Alternative Americana - whatever......she's invented it, she owns it too......
CMAT has mastered this type of "leaving" song sad and funny, tear in your beer heartbreak like she can't leave herself and she knows it...........one of the brightest new talents of the MAR era, and yet another superb artist from Ireland to go with Fontaines D.C., The Clockworks, Sprints, and even Lankum ..........as the Queen herself says in this song : "It's not that fncking deep"........and yeah I tipped y'all to her and you're fncking welcome / send money.....
Sensational Pop Music .....

A. Savage Elvis In The Army
Leader of Parquet Courts - one of the few special American bands over the last 11 years - and who essentially are what Spoon were in the 00s - consistently great, or near great - over multiple releases and years.
Marvelous song and quite the opening couplet too:
Most things are over, the old world is gone Worship death, catch your breath, that's the west, carry on
