Girl, I Want You Brad Marino
Brad Marino - my number 5 album in 2021 - paying tribute to the early Kinks with a throwback homage .....I love how Marino and Geoff Palmer are the Dave Edmunds & Nick Lowe / Rockpile of this era - playing what they like for (the few) people who get it and like it too - regardless of record sales or commercial potential nowadays - both of them are oblivious to trends or fashion but they're not old dinosaurs they're revivalists in the best way........for them good Rock and Roll is never passe ........

Amorphis which is among the best and most consistent bands in the metal scene are releasing a new album in February. The first song from it is pretty great and the album looks very promising. Amorphis have almost always released high quality work and this looks like another stellar entry to their discography.

Fontaines DC Jackie Down The Line
Worlds best band - non-Speedways division - from their forthcoming, potential beast of a 3rd album.

That's more like it from Fontaines DC. Just guitar, bass, and drums like their first album. I thought they got way too pop on the last one with how compressed the drums sounded and all the keyboards.

Spoon Wild
On December 31st Matt Speedway dropped a demo of "maybe" 5 new Speedways songs and yesterday it was Fontaines DC......and now our 3rd "who is the best Rock band right now" contender - living legends Spoon - winner of "the most consistent band" at least - every Spoon album sounds like them but without sounding quite redundant.
Spoon at their worst make albums that just aren't quite as good as their very best ones - they never "disappoint"........and their best ones (Gimme Fiction (2005), Ga ga ga ga ga (2007), They Want My Soul (2014), Kill The Moonlight (2002)) are top to bottom excellent and among the best Rock albums of the last 20 years.
This new album comes out Feb 11

Parquet Courts Watching Strangers Smile

It's the 15th. Wtf.

Damn, excited for this year after a weak '21...... new Spoon album alone has me pumped, add Parquet Courts, a rumored Arctic Monkeys, and two (release dates below) from Jack White who I haven't really loved since Blunderbuss but still...
Fear of the Dawn (April 8) Entering Heaven Alive (July 22)
New acoustic song released yesterday...

Two of my favorite bands in the world - Beach House and Big Thief - are releasing huge double albums on consecutive weeks this February and combined they've released a total of 21 (!) of those tracks already, which is generous of them because they know I couldn't process all those new songs at once.
In the past 24 hours alone each artist has released one of their best songs ... not just of the new stuff but, possibly in general?

My 2 favourite artists are rumoured to be dropping in the first half of the year, so big hype.

I reviewed the new Big Thief a couple weeks back or so in the "Last Album You Listened To" thread if you want to know a bit more about it - it's very much a critics album and will get a lot of raves I'm sure ........they also have a very generous piece on them and this record in Rolling Stone about this album if you haven't seen that......

Sakis Tolis, the founder and songwriter of Rotting Christ (which is among the GOAT metal bands), is releasing a solo album this year and the first song from it is pretty great. It reminds me a lot of late 90s era Rotting Christ.

Album of the year contender - so far at least - which drops for normal people on April 8th - but that prick pacinoyes has had it since late 2021 - ugh - I hate that guy!! - Wet Leg does a video for the poptastic instant classic "Oh No" single #4...... .....which might not even be in the top half of this albums 12 tracks (arguably, the album is that good)..........not kidding....... Fncking zen

Upon a couple of listens at least I'm not as in love with the new Mitski album, Laurel Hell, as I was her last three - this doesn't have the propulsion of Be the Cowboy or the rawness of Puberty 2 or Bury Me at Makeout Creek. In the singles I was a bit unsure about the more synth-infused pop sound - now I sort of wish that, if she wanted to do her pop album, she just committed to it all the way. To me this is an album with like 4 really fun upbeat songs with some weird dead space in between them. There's almost no way I listen to this full album as much as those others - and even those I don't listen to as much these days, so maybe I'm just growing out of the appeal or w/e.
That said - "Should've Been Me" is the easy standout for me. This is sort of the toe-tapping anthemic sound that Mitski had been lacking previously - and "The Only Heartbreaker" and "Love Me More" might tickle that fancy too but this is even better than those two singles, I think.

Wet Leg - Life Is A Rollercoaster - 2022 (Live version) ........another take of this is on an Apple Home Music Session - seek it out if this version is too low fidelity.
Glorious, giddy fun.......released on the same day as their video for the 4th single from their upcoming album - no band is having a 2022 like Wet Leg.........and it hasn't even kicked in yet........ Their mostly terrific, pacinoyes raved debut album - and that loudmouth hates everything - is coming in just 2 months..........and now this victory lap already. Before this their (live) covers have just been quirky ok - an Art-Punk take on Madonna's Material Girl and a straight up run through of the Talking Heads Psycho Killer.
But THIS cover - of a song by the former boy band singer from Boyzone (?!?!) - sounds only like Wet Leg ......
The original song kind of really sucks ......yet I've played this Wet Leg cover a billion times in just a few days......
Also (the awesome) Rhian Teasdale here is in knee socks (um), suggestively moving her hips (!!), all while singing "Don't Fight It" (so you know, don't).

If this is indeed Isaac’s last song with BCNR, what a perfect swan song. The last 4 minutes are especially sublime.

New Chilis album coming out April 1, and this single was released yesterday. The Irish-sounding vocal style is weird, but the guitar work makes the song.... so glad to see Frusciante back after not being with them for the last 16 years. I thought their last couple albums were okay, and I appreciated Klinghoffer's different style, but it's really nice to hear Frusciante's familiar guitar sound again...

The Courettes So What
Spoon dropped a new song today (album due Friday) but it left me (surprisingly) cold.......("My Babe").......... so instead of that ......
Creators of 2021's ace novelty single R.I.N.G.O - The Courettes who have quite a way with lyrics - "Forget John Lennon / George well he's ok / Done with McCartney / I want Richard Starkey ......"
This band - a White Stripes in reverse - is the most authentic retro sounding act I know of in any style - they completely nail the 60s Garage aesthetic, musicianship, and production flourishes.
It's uncanny how they do this actually.......

Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever The Way It ShattersOne of the worlds best young bands in the 2017-2018 era of EPs and their ace debut (that album Hope Downs was a best of year level debut). I talked about 'em a lot in those days - they once appeared to be the new Australian version of REM. They are one of the few bands that actually play Rock as Pop nowadays - also, Indie girls love this band because they are "wistful" ......girls like "wistful"....apparently. Their 2nd album made them sound more like the new The Church - which is fine - but a step down - I liked most of it though but they seemed suddenly less cool - I think I gave it a 7.5. This one sounds like they may have jumped the shark - described as recorded in a house (um) - a dipshit title "Endless Rooms" ...........a May 6th release for it - which guarantees it has a chance to get lost in the mid-year blues. Good single though......we'll see .....

Already posted about Big Thief above -- their new double album Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You is now out in its entirety. "Simulation Swarm" posted above is still the best song on the album -- and maybe the band's first or second best song ever -- but the album is full of gems.
One thing the singles don't hint is the album's sneaky mid-section where it shifts into a surprisingly lo-fi gear. I adore the one-two punch of "Flower of Blood" and the absolutely excellent trip hop inspired "Blurred View" which just rules:

Fontaines D.C. I Love You
Worlds best band, non-Speedways Division deliver a greeeeeeeeeeeeat song that sounds more like the moody, introspective 2nd album than outward looking, noisy 1st.
Fncking big time Rock stars acting like it and knowing it - an instant classic:

Fncking big time Rock stars acting like it and knowing it - an instant classic: I haven't been totally won over on Fontaines D.C. in the past but I'm sorta obsessed with this song. Shades of The Cure in this ... or like a much better Interpol maybe? Whatever it is ... I'm really into it.

Wet Leg tour dates in Southern California. They haven't even released an album yet and they already have a full American slate lined up. I haven't heard them yet, but by the way people are talking about them - it's like they're the new White Stripes.
