Wet Leg Angelica
It's Wet Leg's world MAR - you just have the pleasure of breathing the air in it.........
The 5th single - from the pacinoyes officially approved™ - monster debut album - that's STILL 5 weeks away .......There's at least 3 or 4 other songs which could have been picked over this superb track maybe - it's THAT good......and this one is a bit of an aberration:
All 4 previous Wet Leg singles grab you with the very first striking lines - but this is their "slow burn" or a grower - it reveals more about its dual topic as it goes on.....it fits great on the album too - and gets into their weird side.

Coach Party Weird Me Out (Released today 3 /1 /2022)Coach Party's 3 best songs - Can't Talk - Won't, Everybody Hates Me, Bleach......were some of my favorite Indie Rock of 2020 & 2021. Their first song of 2022 shows singer / bassist / center of attention Jess Eastwood in typical starry and exuberant form - this is now 2 singles in a row that sound like they are writing songs specifically to play live instead of for an album. Hmmmmmmm.........still waiting on that debut album guys .......

The new Tears For Fears album actually kind of slaps... even the 2-3 slightly cheesy tracks.

Phoebe Bridgers shows announced for 2022.
There is a chance I can make a whole bunch of these (Indio, Vegas, Denver, Asbury Park). I suppose I should actually listen to her. Every show I go to these days, some girl mentions her and starts going gaga all over her - and I'm all out of the loop. Her and Julien Baker are the 2 most mentioned names among the shows I go to. Girls, I tell you... they're so weird.

Kate Clover Heaven Down Here
Finally - a new American solo female with some balls - heck a new American period given our US castrated male bands - Kate Clover has a debut album due out 4 / 22 that has a lot of hype - though I think she's been around a while in music (maybe? - she seems to know a lot of people anyway....). She looks and sounds sort of like Debbie Harry - she also sounds very L.A. and evokes it too - but in a good Punk way, not a hair metal way. Already in 2022 - we've had pretty good - or better - new music from 6 female fronted acts - Wet Leg (UK), Nicfit (Japan), Coach Party (UK), NOBRO (Canada), The Mysterines (UK), and now Kate Clover - all with 1 full length debut or less (just singles, EPs) ...............that's a pretty starry sky of up and comers ...........and it's only March. All 6 are covered in this thread or in the "Rate The Last Album You Listened To" and all 6 have albums just out or due soon(ish).....

Fontaines D.C. Skinty Fia
World's best band - non-Speedways division (um) - walking around with the swagger of the Gallagher brothers in 94 / 95.
Sounding almost goth-y, Depeche Mode-ish.........yet another curveball ......hmmmmmm
First album - pacinoyes top 5 of 2019 ..........Second album - pacinoyes top 5 of 2020.........Third album - April 22, 2022 .....hmmmm

Coach Party Nothing Is RealJess Eastwood remains a marvelous frontwoman in what is suddenly an overcrowded field of bad-ass girls in Rock - meanwhile male Rock stars are content to talk to their doctors about their low sperm count.......this sounds shoegaze and is a very comfortable fit for them. If you read my music posts, you know I've tipped this band for a great debut album for a long time now - if they get a producer who can cherry pick their best songs and cut out their lesser ones. Their best songs - Can't Talk, Wont, Everybody Hates Me, Bleach are terrific. Title song of a forthcoming EP.....

Wet Leg Piece of Shit
My favorite song on their Pop-tastic debut - does something I always love - it sets a deceptively complicated scene through quotes (or implied contextual quotes / dialogs) - conveys the setting, tone / feeling, and passage of time in a way you understand - but can not "exactly" understand fully.
I compared this song to some heavy hitters: Pavement's "Here", Liz Phair's "Fuck and Run" and The Strokes "Someday" in the "Last Concert You Saw" thread - they have some of the same elements - particularly in the way its potential audience may be moved - deeply moved - by its use and twisting of language. Wet Leg uses language (and also vulgarity / profanity) like no other young band right now - and in deceptively sophisticated ways too.
Verse 1 - is painfully descriptive - no extraneous details provided - in the "Alright" section #1 we then move to self description - she describes in derogatory (profane) terms which we assume is sarcastic and quoting his words back to him - but when he himself was not sarcastic -- "same words, different meaning" now.
Verse 2 - again the words are further descriptive and when the profanity comes in now at the - "Fncking you goodbye" line it is descriptive AND (negatively) emotive - or is it merely descriptive and not emotive at all? It's impossible to tell by the sing-songy, almost childish way it's being sung - a repetitive lilt at the end of each line - mocking him? Like a child to him because that's how she's been treated?
The song is already complicated........then it goes deeper within its plot: When the song changes: "You can never tell what it is I'm thinking" - it makes sense outside of the story because it's impossible for the listener to know too - she repeats "help you sleep at night" at the end of the 2 verses - why twice? Because she can't sleep (too)? Or because she sleeps just fine (too?) .......and knows he doesn't and she's mocking him because he's wrong / a PoS? or................ Is she just wishing that on him to be like her (too) and she hates that he sleeps fine?
The descriptive words she used on herself now seems to foreshadow where the song has moved on to suddenly higher stakes: "Say you think about me when you're fncking her" - but still never tipping off by how it's sung - who is "the slut" referenced earlier now exactly - still the singer? Or the other girl on the boat? You notice that detail because it was her quoting him - it makes a world of difference that it was not at all emotive prior - but solely descriptive.
The ending of the song is another level of unclear but not random too - where words obscure the meaning of other words or actions change meanings depending on who is saying them:
"Technical-ly" is very cleverly linked with "unenthusiastical-ly" - in a way that is incomplete - we don't know what she has agreed to "unenthusiastically"..........to see other people? To try to save the relationship after the episode on his daddy's boat? Because she was pushed into giving it another try to continue the relationship?........... Maybe it's just referencing "today's" plans falling through all the way back in verse 1 ?!?!
It's a great song imo because the conception of the song matches its performance execution of it - there's a reason for every line, and it is amazingly economical in how much it conveys to us - every vocal choice, every stealth possible lyrical meaning or possible misunderstanding of those lyrics is carefully orchestrated right down to that last line (the singing changes here - it is either wistful or more likely sarcastic - but something......... has ......permanently changed).
Song of the year contender for me.....along with Fontaines D.C.'s I Love You atm
Didn't get up 'til the afternoon Our plans fell through and now You're calling me out Guess I should've set the alarm A little earlier 'Cause now you call me up
Alright, I'm not enough Alright, I fucked it up Alright, I'm such a slut Alright, whatever helps you sleep at night
Didn't wanna have this out with you But now I have no choice You're talking to them Well, if you were better to me Then maybe I'd consider Fucking you goodbye
Alright, want me to cry Alright, like I might die Alright, you're a good guy Alright, whatever helps you sleep at night
'Cause you can never tell what it is I am thinking You say I'm mysterious 'cause I won't let you get it in Yeah, you can never tell where it is this is going You say you're a genius, I say you must be joking You're like a piece of shit, you either sink or float So you take her for a ride on your daddy's boat And you are not in love, but it's close enough You say you think about me when you're fucking her Yeah, technically, I know that I agreed But it was unenthusiastically

Duster - Together
Been a while since I listened to Duster, but I remember really liking their debut album at the very least. Got this recommended, and it's pretty damn good I must say. I love the overall soundscape, and it's filled with some teriffic songs. Feel No Joy might just be my favorite song in the past year or so - brilliant, melodic guitar work right there and endlessly listenable because of it. 8/10

Kate Clover Daisy Cutter
2nd single just released from her upcoming debut album.
The only person in American Rock so far in 2022 that intrigues me is Kate Clover and her whole aesthetic .......in addition to this song - you see it in a brief new promotional clip where she sits down with a shoe company (um) to talk about her music, her flawless retro modern fashion sense / style, and her pacinoyes level record collection.
Her presentation is so precise and specifically curated it either suggests a calculated phony.........or a cool af small time legend in our time.
Legend seems more likely atm....

Jessie Buckley & Bernard Butler The Eagle & The DoveRemember when Bernard Butler was a Punk (and a pretty good one at the very start of Suede) - and then Brett Anderson's girlfriend / bandmember / turn your life to utter chaos, Queen Bitch Justine Frischmann pre-Elastica (who were, you know, awesome) - started fncking Damon Albarn and turned Damon immediately into a pretentious wussy mope that Oasis gloriously mocked and he couldn't (or wouldn't) do shit about it? That's not slut shaming btw......it's more like Blur shaming. Damn British music was fascinating once...... Now Butler - looking at the short end of disappointing career tbh - teams up with perpetually "looks like she's about to cry" Oscar nominee and Olivier Winner Jessie Buckley and the results make me wish for the gloriously simple songs of Julien Baker.........that was a joke. I haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate this.....ymmv - people seem to like it or something, but people like weird diets, Self Flagellation and Julien Baker too. ...........album this Summer......... I'll review it....don't miss it (um).........unless I can't take one for the team and let it slide ....

Fontaines D.C. Roman HolidayWorld's best band atm with the 4th song (and there's only 10 on it btw) released. Album of the ear contender obviously - there's at least 3 of those though so far -reviewed in the last album you listened to thread - but it can be arty / difficult too for some. This one is pretty easy to like though......pleasing to the ear ........

Sorta (but not really) surprised that no one here has yet mentioned The Smile -- the latest Thom Yorke / Jonny Greenwood side project, who just announced their first album is due out on May 13.
Already released five singles ranging from very good to great. These two are my favorites so far -- the first a kickass genuine rock song that's nothing like Radiohead, the other very Radiohead-y and completely unlikely to win over any new converts:

Kate Clover Gnarcissist This is one of the few songs in recent years to be one of my favorites - simply because of the way it is sung.......not sung as a character or as "voice device" but merely because it is a beautiful female voice, singing beautifully. We almost never get this nowadays....... The female voice has been aurally desecrated with annoying as fnck twee waifs over-singing their BS songs on a level not seen since Whitney Houston or Mariah Carey in their most OTT days of shattered glass.........this is especially true in Indie Rock where how good a female singer you are apparently equals how many times people want to say "OMG she sounds like she's in real pain!" Clover - of course, like Lucy Ellis - is too smart (and cool tbh) for that wounded bird crapola and here shows how this song should be sung - with no pretension or vocal trickery. She starts by clearing her throat......in the musical break she gently improvises a "woah".........but of course, the song is a put down - - that "woah" is ironic, the clearing of her throat is to make sure you get it. If you get it....... This is also one of my favorite things in movies - where actors play a heroic part as villain or vice versa. NOT that it is written that way but in how the actor plays it.........Clover sings this like it's a love song..........it most certainly is not and her use of her voice makes it my favorite off a record - Bleed Your Heart Out - that goes 10 for 10 and in many ways is a perfectly realized debut Rock album........which we also hardly ever get .......

One of two 7" vinyl bonus tracks if you pre-ordered it.......when this gets its "Expanded Deluxe Edition CD" after they win awards, a ton of magazine covers and sell a bajillion copies.......this could easily have been another single ......

Kiwi Jr. Night Vision
Canadian band that's been bubbling under for the last few years - they've done 2 really good albums, their last one Cooler Returns was a "near miss" just outside the pacinoyes 2021 Best Albums of the Year (Amen) ........and this new song extends their usual Pavement worship with a Strokes type New Wave sheen / Casablancas crooning.....
3rd album in August on Sub-Pop - a band to watch....

NOBRO Life Is A VoyageOne of the best all female bands on the planet and one of the best bands without a full album (yet) too. This Canadian band got real good all of a sudden with their previous EP ( Sick Hustle) and even better in 2022 with their latest - the spectacularly named Live Your Truth Shred Some Gnar which has shown up on my top 10 most played lists (songs and EP) all year. This is the closer to the 7 song EP that shows them essentially acting with great camaraderie, lots of F-bombs (this band curses constantly in their songs ) and fantastic taste in Punk Rock sneakers.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs Spitting Off the Edge of The World
Hmmmmmmm, I recently posted in the Unpopular Music Thread that the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs were better - or at least more fun than peers like Aracde Fire or less annoying than Vampire Weekend at least ........ and they have aged better too....and now they drop their first new music in 9 years with Perfume Genius in which they kind of sound like ..........um........Arcade Fire (not really but.....) - verrrrrrrrrrry mature and serious.
Not bad though......album to follow....
