The Bobby Lees Ma Likes To Drink
2022's Most Improved Rock Band - explodes through a 101 second blur of sexual abuse (?) and obscenity where everybody gets to show off - particularly the bassist - and that leaves you breathless when it stops.
Disturbing, specific and bracing stuff .....

More Kicks Hurts Like Hell
I made fun of U2's Vertigo - a daft piece of cynical, careerist, product pushing dumbfuckery - as "overstuffed" once - well they maybe wanted it to be like this song:
It starts a capella - never returns to that, on the contrary - then each instrument comes in one at a time. They repeat one word 3 times (cleverly it's the word "again") and later drag one syllable out for multiple beats (Hell-ll-ll......clever, so you get it, again), the spoken word part wrestles for your attention and ear space with the chorus as a background, then the solo bleeds in - until a pounding ending .............. all in under 3 minutes.
Like their influences - early Who / Jam / Buzzocks it is simple but not in any way simplistic - it's actually rather sophisticated - and yet it sounds lean as it plays......
From 2nd album - Punch Drunk - due September 16th - already a jump in quality - off of just 3 released songs so far......

The Heat Inc. 98
Creators of one of 2022's best songs - the anthemic, roaring single "Draw Blood For Proof" - are back with a new track that mixes Classic Rock Moves with Punk Spirit and echoes their earlier song but without ripping themselves off.
Very interesting, contradictory band - on these 2 singles anyway - before they botch their recipe and just turn into Foo Fighters or something.....

The Jeanines Latest Light & After All
I said before that this duo's 2nd album which I reviewed - Don't Wait For A Sign (2022) - was sort of a masterpiece of stuff I don't care about at all - twee folk cutesy Pop........but they are so good at it that they are somewhat like (the tougher, meaner) 80s band Talulah Gosh - who I really like in this nonsense genre and who kind of invented it for shittier acts to follow (they never made a proper album - but you can get everything they ever cut on the compilation Was It Just A Dream?)
These 2 new songs are like that Jeanines album - and both are 90 seconds which is totally typical of them. One half of this duo - Jed Smith aka the hilarious Mick Trouble - creates striking folk structures and Alicia Jeanine floats through them like a lovely ghost with a somehow tolerable falsetto ffs.
Music for females (come on, be honest) to listen to on rainy days while almost crying and stroking a cat .....

Arctic Monkeys Body Paint
I dunno man - to me they have 3 winner albums (1,2,5) and 3 not so much (3,4,6) - and this new one - album 7 - sounds ......well not bad at all.....but also not very Rock and Roll and very grand tbh........probably will be killer live though.....intriguing first 2 songs......you can never tell without hearing it in context

Guerilla Teens Halfway To MaybeI've discussed the concept of "losering" in Rock and Roll before - drug addicted, dumbfnckery in the manner of the Dolls / Thunders - it produces many albums but very few great ones.....but one of the best ones is in the Most Underrated Albums thread - The Humpers - Positively Sick on 4th Street (1993) - a genuinely dangerous, antisocial record of drugs, sex, jail, and more drugs in an era where that was (and still is) grossly out of fashion. It is a crucial record in "the secret history of Rock and Roll" - it makes much 90s Rock and Roll sound like utter BS tbh.... They never came close to equalling that quasi-classic but made some other cool singles - and weirdly made a fairly awesome followup in an entirely different band - The Vice Principals - "After School With...." (2000) - reviewed in the "Last Album You Listened To" thread. This new song is by a new band that features the same singer and guitarist - these guys are in their 50s.....at least......this song sounds exactly like The Humpers did - 30 years ago......that never happens ......particularly in this style of Rock.......how are they not dead? - Rocks like your Dad on Meth....... Bandcamp link and a photo of The Humpers in their younger, prettier, more alcoholic - I guess - days.... guerrillateens.bandcamp.com/releases

The Bobby Lees Greta Van Fake
This album - "Bellevue" comes out today - an album of the year contender obviously - a violent seizure set to guitars and heart attacks.
This album just peels the paint off the walls - a tremendous piece of genuine Rock and Roll - almost unheard of in these days and I can't recommend it enough.
This song is one of the best diss songs in some time - a "Story of Adidon" level put down out of nowhere - unprovoked, funny and mean and completely unnecesary too ......... and I can't remember the last time anybody in Rock and Roll got enough balls to tell somebody in its own genre - especially - to just take a long walk off a short pier.

Another great album from one of my favorite bands in the world, Alvvays, who across three LPs I don't think have a single bad song. Most seem to think this is their best yet; the more I listen to it, I think I agree...

The Heat Inc Little Knuckle CharlieThe 3rd song from 2022 from this band - all in this thread - that sounds like Jim Morrison fronting the Pixies and turning into the Jesus and Mary Chain around the time of Automatic .....with a song that is really disturbing and opaque and not just for combining those influences either..... Draw Blood For Proof was one of the years very best songs, 98 was another great chorus winner, and so is this but now I'm half about to tell them to fnck off with the Lizard King in Leather Pants Poetry Shit While Reading Rimbaud and to just pick a musical team ffs........an actual album might resolve this but they'd just say they're doing Iggy / Nick Cave just to confuse things even more

PJ Harvey Why D'Ya Go To Cleveland
The stupendous box set B-Sides, Demos And Rarities - is out today - one of the years best re-releases along with The Libertines 20th Anniversary Up The Bracket and T.Rex 1972........it has a ton of fascinating songs, peaks and detours.....the best "gift-wrapped trash" by a major artist in a looooooooong time......it's as essential as her proper albums actually......

Ingrates Don't Be A Stranger
Never a big deal in any of their previous singles - they somehow stumble on to a hook by slowing it down, increasing the Glam-Rock vibe, increasing The Exploding Hearts crossed with Slade influence and making it really life coach positive and feel good.....but not a joke.......as far as I can tell anyway......
The sing-song Rocccccccccck chorus of the year and this song gets special with the 1976 "where do we go!" ending.....when is the last time a Rock song made you want to hi-five or bro-hug somebody?

The Speedways Talk of the Town
pacinoyes'© favorite band of the MAR era (2017-2022) .........which means they are the best band of the MAR era ......fight me!.......with their new single:
A departure from their usual Power Pop formula: a Thin Lizzy-like song mixed with 80s New Wave sort of polish - we'll have to see if this is longer on the album too because the ending suggests it might be ..... in true Thin Lizzy or the more Pop songs of UFO (Lights Out, Too Hot To Handle) dual guitar style.......this is as close as the band has ever come to being outside of their comfort zone....and it sounds like it either builds to something else at the end ........or will in the live setting.....it seems low-key, funky, poppy and epic all at once ....
