We had a thread on the 2017 (lol) US Open - in the subject line ........but just wanted to make a new thread since we may be looking at a breakthrough for another player besides the big 3: Federer pulls out of Cincinnati (injured)...........Nadal lost yesterday to Harris (wtf) in Washington (6-4, 1-6, 6-4) and Djoko coming off the Olympic disaster..........of course that's best of 3 sets in Washington and the Olympics............. which isn't the same as best of 5 sets...........but...........could be the start of another player ascending

Tennis is probably going to be in shambles for the forseeable future. Fed/Nadal/Djoke are running on fumes and still sorta running shit. Murray would be there too if his hip wasn't fucked. Felix gotta step up. Zverev gotta win a damn slam. Tsitsipas and Shapovalov gotta be dangerous every day.

Djoko not playing Cincy or Canada - Federer too .......so no prep tournament play between the Olympics and US Open for Djoko Nadal playing Harris tomorrow in a rematch in Toronto - Harris beat him in Washington last week - Nadal says his ankle hurts........drops to 4th ranked in the world ATP atm - Tsitsipas slightly ahead to 3rd ..... So Djoko and Federer resting, Nadal playing through the pain like the Boss he is (just kidding, F-him ) though Nadal could pull out of Cincy if he needs too......

Second seed Rafael Nadal has withdrawn from the National Bank Open Presented by Rogers due to a left foot injury, the tournament announced Tuesday.
“I have had this issue for a couple of months, as people know,” Nadal said. “Of course, it is not a happy situation after all the success that I had here in Canada, not being able to play this year after missing a year. It’s a tough one, but that's how it is today. I need to go back and try to find a way to be better again. At the end of the day, for me the most important thing is to enjoy playing tennis. Today, with this pain, I am not able to enjoy it, and I really don't believe that I have the chance to fight for the things that I really need to fight for."

TSITSIPAS vs OPELKA today in the semis in Canada and Opelka wins in 3 sets : 6-7, 7-6, 6-4 so anyone looking for someone from the "young guns" going into the US Open with a little swagger ..........well, I don't know, it has to be Medvedev I guess.....or nobody (?) He plays tonight in Canada and I guess will be seeded #1 in Cincy........in the meantime .......Opelka........go figure ..........a US men's tennis player....

Defending US Open female champ is out at Cincy...... Osaka loses to Teichmann 3-6 6-3 6-3 at Cincy .......that was kind of brutal ........basically double faulted the match away - at times she was just breaking down out there

Nadal pulls out of the rest of 2021 So it's either Djoko gets to 21 slams or they all stay at 20

Seems like the stars are aligning for Djokovic here. They were kinda aligned for him at the Olympics too though, and he fell apart spectacularly, embarrassingly even.
Honestly, I kinda just want him to get to the 21 and see it over with. It's not like it will settle the greatest debate anyway. Yes he'll have more slams than Federer and Nadal and also a calendar year slam, which neither of them have to their names (next to no one does), but Federer and Nadal fans aren't gonna just suddenly stop claiming greatest status for those two. Still, I don't see Federer adding anymore to his tally, and I probably don't see Nadal adding anymore to his either...not even French Opens. Djokovic on the other hand probably has at lease one more good year in him. He can easily add to the 21 should he get there in a few weeks. I just want him to get there though, so we don't have to keep hearing about when will he get there like Serena with the elusive 24.

Though for me it's like when people talk GOAT actors and stretch the facts to make a case for some they are just fanboys of when the facts don't back that up..........to me that's always been the Nadal situation. I can see where people can make a case for Federer at his peak (though I still personally would put him 2nd, I love him though) ............but Nadal just is so clearly 3rd to me ............ Nadal hasn't even won a set - not one set ! - on a hard court against Djokovic in 8 years - he's 0-9 with no sets won in that run To me he wasn't the threat to stop Djoko in 2021 - the threat to me is more Medvedev but ......... The problem is it is so much easier to beat Djokovic in a 3 set match vs. a 5 set match..... .....and Medvedev still is without a Grand Slam title at all ..........but if he could finally do it .........it would be a landmark moment......

Yeah, I don't see a case for Nadal either, I never have to be honest. He's the greatest clay courter of all-time, I don't even think anyone argues that. Plus take away his French Opens and he still has a nice slam haul, just not nearly as impressive as those of Djok and Fed if you take away their most successful ones. A lot of the other numbers stack up in the favour of either Djok and Fed too. Most weeks at #1, they're both ahead of him. Most overall tournament wins, Federer is well ahead of him. Most Masters events, Djokovic is tied with him.
Nadal is 3rd for me too.

Maybe Zverev is the guy to compete in the US Open - Gold medal win and now in the finals in Cincy too - beat Tsitsipas, while Medvedev lost in semis - someone step up already Ash Barty rolling into the finals here on the women's side - hasn't dropped a set in Cincy so far

Leylah Fernandez over Naomi Osaka 5-7, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 ........man another one - the #3 and defending champ in this case losing to an 18 year old unranked player. Osaka really melting down in the 2nd set and Fernandez got the crowd on her side just like Alcaraz did on the men's side once they thought she could win

I'm following Carlos Alcaraz' results very close over two or three years already. It's always very tough to predict the future for those teenagers, cause you never know how they adapt to the big tour, how fit they will be in their head and especially how focussed they stay and how hard they will train. But Alcaraz and also the Dane Holger Rune where those two who were the talk of tennis insiders the last two or three years. Cause you could see they had the most important basics and you never saw a teenager hit forehands like the kid from Murcia.
When I saw Carlos' first full ATP matches what impressed me most though was his calmness, a bit like the older Jannik Sinner also. He seems to be very fit in his head and this also showed yesterday. For most of the time Alcaraz didn't celebrate too much, but just played point after point. And his shot selection was better than I expect from 18-year olds. He still errs a lot with his powerful shots, but well he just goes for it. He might adapt his game a bit to wait for one or two shots more to pull the trigger.
Alcaraz won a minor clay title in Umag earlier that year, but this performance yesterday was his breakthrough. As I said it's always tough to tell the future, so much can happen. But I think he could be among the top of the game pretty soon.
That was an upset I thought was very unlikely, but the way Tsitsipas played the first two rounds I didn't rule it out.
I was more surprised with Rublev losing to Tiafoe and the most with Osaka losing to Fernandez. With Naomi I think it's all in the head as of now. It was just to much for here. She will take a break and I think this is a wise move to do.

Djoko wakes up and takes care of business 1-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.........into the quarters against a tougher opponent Matteo Berrettini - this same performance will get Joker bounced out of this tournament tbh.......3 wins away from history though .........but still looking eminently beatable Pliskova is into the quarters as well.........

It was from the very start. true..........I picked Plíšková here myself - she also plays today in her 4th round match but hasn't played great herself at times.........although she's been serving up a lot of aces With Pliskova the last matches, when the pressure amounts it is always interesting to watch. She isn't stable in her head and at least in the past couldn't cope with situations of being close to a slam or being the tournament favourite - same is true for Svitolina.
My pretournament pick was Osaka, but head problems seem to be bigger than expected.
But yeah I really don't know whom to pick from the remaining 8. Maybe Bencic, who also was a head case, found herself with her olympic win?
Sabalenka has the biggest shots, but as most with this style of play, she errs a lot.
I always thought Sakkari could do a bit better than her ranking suggests. Maybe it's her time.
Krejcikova, as strange as it sounds, is the only remaining Grand Slam winner. A second for her so fast would almost be surreal, but she played very well so far.
