Mike White is a bit underrated, I like some of his work.... School of Rock can't be messed with, I might've been the only fan of Brad's Status, also was a writer and supervising producer on Freaks and Geeks. This is a good break for him after years of for-hire script jobs, and he's already planning another season as long as HBO is down. I was neutral and meh on Ep1 but Ep2 is better, really knotting the characters and PTA-playbook tone, a lot of stressful crosscurrents, play-nice fronts of the server-servee, personal strandedness.....etc. There's a plotless competition-esque tension that White might've liked and used from his time as reality tv contestant (he was Survivor Season 37's runner up!) but the class wealth ironies he's always tipped into.

My favorite of his. Mostly original way of looking at mid-life crisis with expertly balancing drama and humor. I even nominate Stiller. Incredibly underrated stuff. As for "White Lotus", it's fun, so far. I was not sure about the first episode but it's getting better.

I'm about to start episode three and this has been excellent so far! Been a big fan of Mike White over the years, especially School of Rock and Enlightened. He also made for great TV on Survivor and I can't help but think he added a dash of his experience into this. Such a unique and deliciously off-putting tone that started right off the bat with the fantastic opening credits -- the use of music and sound design in this is top notch. Fun camerawork as well. Love the paradise-like setting as all these character seem moments away from a psychological break. Great drama, dialogue and performances and I like how my opinion on a character often changes from one minute to the next.
With the opening I thought this might be an Agatha Christie-like whodunnit, but I love that the mystery is still unravelling. It's also incredibly funny at times and very entertaining (I think I could watch how this resort is run all day). The cast has been great and I'm so pleased that Zahn and Coolidge have some meat to work with. Murray Bartlett was fantastic on Looking and he has such a fascinating character here too. Great balance of focusing on both the staff and guests throughout the episodes. Gosh, really digging this and is such a fun summer miniseries!

So far White Lotus has had some fairly good moments for me, without being too compelling. I guess I may have a better idea about it and my feelings after seeing the entire story.
I do want to add that I think Mike White's film Brad's Status is really, really good. Much better, more insightful, and darker than what it initially appears to be. It maybe got dismissed in some quarters as another movie about middle-aged privileged white man problems, but the writing is brilliant and the whole cast, led by Ben Stiller, is great.

No comments after last night's episode?! Armond is just trying to have a hot girl summer.

Armond is in trouble. Somewhat related: Also, I've like Alexandra Daddario's work in the show. She is probably the only one who doesn't seem crazy or messed up by life...?

This took a while to find its footing, but I'm fully invested after ep 4. You know right up top that something bad happened, but there is still a lot of wit and deftness to how White unravels the shiny facade of these people's lives.
Out of the cast, Daddario comes through as the biggest surprise--for all her unreal beauty, she actually plays awkward/uncomfortable/put-upon extremely well. Lacy, Zahn, and Bartlett also deliver some of the best cringe-laughs. Coolidge is not doing anything new here but she's a hoot nonetheless, and Rothwell is an excellent straightwoman.
Also, the opening credits (mesmerizing) proffer a lot of clues...pay attention to the illustrations beside/behind each cast member's name.

Allenism - Loved your write-up, but I do think we're seeing Coolidge charter some new territory. The scene on the boat with her mother's ashes saw her imbuing her usual (excellent) ditzy comedy with deep despair.

Coolidge is excellent but Jake Lacy,Murray Bartlett and surprisingly,Steve Zahn, are the ones who have really impressed me.Zahn comparing having sex with his wife to sucking down a bowl of worms made laugh out loud.Lacy is pitch perfect as a douchy, entitled white guy.Anyone have any theories about who was in the coffin?.Alexandra Daddario's character seems way too obvious.

She walks that tricky line between comedic and pathetic quite well.

Anyone have any theories about who was in the coffin? Right now, my guess is Paula. She seems to be the only "upstairs" ch aracter truly capable of recognizing injustice - unlike Olivia, who just seems to be "woke" because it's in mode. Her death would make the most sense thematically to me.

Also loved Molly Shannon’s pop-up in the latest ep. Good to see her “dramedic” chops put to use.

I didn’t have much in the way of expectations for this thing, and it’s surprisingly good. Something about it is very engaging, I’m really digging it so far. It’s extremely well-cast all around.
