Yeah, even if he would win a third one for Macbeth, DDL would still be considered the living GOAT. I wouldn't be surprised if he comes back in his late 60s or even early 70s to make one last final film with Scorsese or PTA just to prove that. I'm pretty sure DDL hasn't had a consensus lock on GOAT for a good minute, especially over Denzel, whose rep is at least level with DDL among peers and within the industry, and far greater among general audiences . We aren't in 2012 anymore I don’t really care how many people are salty that I'm saying it, because it's pretty much the reality of things.

Yeah, even if he would win a third one for Macbeth, DDL would still be considered the living GOAT. Respectfully, disagree but I get the idea. There is no ONE GOAT (my jokes on the subject aside - I might have overdone that joke too ) particularly because many of the guys are working around material that could affect their ranking. ......... DePac are alive (and De Niro may win a 3rd next year ffs), Hackman is alive, Nicholson is too...........and so is Dustin Hoffman........not to mention Hopkins .......who is also, still breathing last I heard DePac, Hackman, Nicholson (and maybe Dustin Hoffman?) - all ranked higher on my all time actor list than DDL & those guys with DDL ranked higher than Washington did ..... Now can Washington overtake some or even ALL of those guys ahead of him? Of course he can - he is still is working - it's possible ........who knows what he'll do next year..........or the year after.........

Meh, you're arguing a question that has no answer. Some people will say Brando is the GOAT, some will say De Niro, Pacino, Jack, DDL, Denzel, Olivier, some will say is Zac Efron or Taylor Lautner (the last group is made of idiots, though). It doesn't matter the slightest, because there's no objective answer.
I will say though not my pick for the GOAT by any means, Denzel has a strong case for the best currently working actor because the competition is either dead, retired or in the case of Pacino and De Niro, not in their prime for quite some time. Though even that would be entirely subjective.

One of the things that's so great about this year is you have 3 of the actors often called "the best working" actor have a chance for BA nods - Washington, Phoenix (maybe a slim chance now though), DiCap - AND that list doesn't even include Cooper - love him or hate him - who will have 5 nominations (or 6) in 10 years if nodded which no one else has over that period.......

I think if you ask GP about greatest working actor, they would say either Denzel or Leo.

I get the argument for Smith, but I feel like the urgency to give Denzel his third will be stronger this year than in 2016, especially given how daring of a role this is. Also, part of me thinks that there will be those wanting to give him his third not just because of the performance itself + his narrative and level of respect, but also possibly as a "make-up" or "corrective" gesture after Affleck's win in 2016 post-MeToo.
Could be wrong of course, but that's just my feeling at the moment.

Daniel Day Lewis is human garbage and I’m not sure why we haven’t erased his name from the internet yet.

I don't think he's a lock and he might not be #1 atm - but come on......he's in an almost perfect spot if you we're a betting man.......

I feel like his performance in The Little Things, should have at least solidified him as the most consistent working "actor, actor", today. People may have their issues with Leto and yeah sure, but it's clear the man is a truly committed performer.

Jared Leto is obviously our favorite whipping boy when it comes to the downside of method acting, but his work obviously does impress people, and the transformative aspect of acting is his bread-and-butter. People may not like it, but Leto's really doing his own thing and no one else has that same vibe. He's a unique unicorn in that respect, and while I think he's certainly not to everyone's tastes, he does appeal to some, and they seem to really like what he does. I mean, I'm rooting for him largely for the lulz, but even so, I do think he is a talented and compelling actor with a fascinating presence to watch on-screen.

Right now I will rank them…
1. Smith 2. Washington 3. Cumberpatch 4. Dinklage
Then after that I have no fucking clue. We are waiting to see in Cooper, DiCaprio and Driver and there is no way of knowing what order to put them in until the movies are seen. I’m personally rooting for a first time nomination for either Foster or Collins Jr.

Nothing has swayed me yet from the Top 5 I've been going with most of the year:
Cooper Cumberbatch DiCaprio Smith Washington
It just feels right. We don't always need to have a first time nominee.

1. Will Smith (King Richard) 2. Denzel Washington (The Tragedy of Macbeth) 3. Benedict Cumberbatch (The Power of The Dog) 4. Leonardo DiCaprio (Don't Look Up) 5. Jamie Dornan (Belfast) *
*= If he's campaigned in Lead

I could see either Cooper or Di Caprio missing altogether (well, actually, at this stage I can see anyone doing so) with someone like Dornan or Dinkage, or both, getting in. Not to mention a spoiler- not that many people were predicting Riz Ahmed last year.

I could be misremembering, but I feel like quite a few people were predicting Ahmed at this point, it's not like there were many other options. Cumberbatch, Washington and Smith is an insanely comfortable Top 3, and I don't think there's really any point arguing that. If we then look at DiCaprio and Cooper, they are two absolute Academy favourites, one being directed by McKay, and the other del Toro in Searchlight's #1 (both who got 3 acting noms with their last films). Dinklage is in a Joe Wright musical that won't even be MGM's #1.

Had no chance of an Oscar nom anyway, but Foster will be competing at the Emmy's now instead.

Hey now, HBO getting a campaign for Ben Foster is a worthy consolation prize. Better him to be an Emmy winner than snubbed at the Oscars.

HBO makes sense with Levinson's whole productivity with them. And maybe some Emmy action for Ben Foster, even Krieps who's pretty good - btw stephen Foster technically already a winner - Daytime Emmy for Bang Bang You're Dead !
