Not surprised. Aside from the "COVID of it all", most of the movies were that nominated for best picture, that people either never heard of, or couldn't / didn't really see, and the awards themselves were considered a big mess. The lack of theaters had to have hurt too. Look at something like Parasite, which gradually built its box office and audience awareness over time. That just couldn't happen this year for obvious reasons. Agreed. I wonder if the ratings rebound in the future as people begin to feel comfortable going back to theaters. Mortal Kombat opened well at the BO the past weekend, so maybe we're seeing a trend in people going back to the theaters.

Oh absolutely theaters will be coming back, and that will obviously help plenty of these movies in the future. In a just non-COVID world for example, I could have seen something like Ma Rainey's Black Bottom making like 20 to 30m, mostly sold off the back of it being Chadwick's last performance. On Netflix though, that film just reads as a straightforward play adaptation. My only question relates to social media, which I think also plays a part, and how that might affect the way the ceremonies are presented in the future. Lots to ponder of course.

There was not one blockbuster type movie in the bunch. What did they expect?

À true class act. However, I have the feeling that he's feeling awkward that the Academy chose him instead of Chadwick. He definitely shouldn't. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 Yeah, it's like he was in shock. Was his 1992 speech that brief? Can't blame him for not attending, though. After all, he's 83 and we're in the middle of a pandemic. He probably felt safer at home, but much like McDormand I feel he also never cared too much for awards.

Wasn't his Silence of the Lambs performance also considered a suprise? I think Nolte was the frontrunner that year. Hopkins has twice exceeded expectations.

I didn't watch the show, so why is this in my Youtube recommended feed?

So I just watched a ninety minute highlight package of the show, and that was painful...and those were supposedly the highlights. Fuck me! A sincere round of applause to those who made it through the whole thing. The In Memoriam had to be the ultimate lowlight from what I saw. What a mess.

Ugh...it just gets worse and worse. Hopkins is an 83 year old man and we are in the middle of a global pandemic. He shouldn't be having to travel anywhere. He should have been given an exemption to Zoom on the basis of his age. Really shitty for him not to be able to have that moment.

Seriously, there was a lot of baffling or mishandled choices the producers made, but not letting Hopkins accept via zoom is just inexcusable garbage.

I think not letting Colman accept Hopkins’ award is even more appalling than the no zoom rule. That’s completely unacceptable.

wasn't it 4AM in Wales where Hopkins lives? Doubt he was going to stay up for a Zoom call if if they'd let him.

I’m pretty sure that Hopkins never attended the Oscars when he was nominated other than his first 3 nominations in 1992, 1994, and 1996. He wasn’t present in 1998, 2002, and 2020, but he definitely had asked people to collect the award for him in case he won.

It’s kind of insane that Frances McDormand cruised to a third lead win under such unusual circumstances. A mere three years after her second, without campaigning (she didn’t even bother to virtually attend SAG or BAFTA) and in such a subtle role. I’d always assumed that the 3x Oscar club was pretty exclusive and not all that easy to break into. I also didn’t think McDormand was as respected as she clearly is at this point. I see her as a good actress who can be great, but has a somewhat limited range. Never really thought of her as one of the greats, though I do think she deserved to win here and gave her best performance.
I’ll be interested to see how long she can keep this sort of momentum going (at least with nominations) because I think great roles for someone her age and casting limitations have to be pretty rare.

Honestly, I think what helped this third win, aside from the fact that she was in a universally acclaimed BP/BD frontrunner that swept everything from critics awards to televised awards, were the unusual circumstances we're in, an award season during a pandemic.
No in person events or screenings and an unusually and extremely long awards season made sure that many voters ponderated and carefully reconsidered their choices without any bias or artificial hype coming from attending events or screenings.
In other words in a normal awards season of regular length, I don't think McDormand would have ever won. Mulligan or Davis would have.

So your rationale is that the Academy picked a person based purely on merit, then. So why do you keep slagging off McDormand?

So apparently some yahoos online are blaming Phoenix for going rogue and shutting down the show. Pretty sure nobody has the authority to do that except the producers.

I think Phoenix too was rooting for Boseman, so he said "Hopkins won, fuck it, let's end this shitshow!"

Pretty much agree jot-for-jot. She doesn't have many tricks up her sleeve, but what she can do she does extremely well (I still haven't seen Nomadland yet, though). I suspect if Mulligan was a bigger name and/or her film came out later in the year, she would've been the winner.

So apparently some yahoos online are blaming Phoenix for going rogue and shutting down the show. Pretty sure nobody has the authority to do that except the producers. Kyle Buchanan says that the Olivia Colman plan to accept on Hopkins's behalf was indeed just a rumor. Apparently she had left the ceremony shortly after her category. And Hopkins offered to Zoom in and stay up late to do so, but was rebuffed. What throws me off is that they had Zellweger present Actress and Phoenix present Actor. And while I love Joaquin, let's be real: dude is not comfortable blowing smoke up other people's asses, and that presentation aspect of it was simply not his thing. I don't mind that he riffed the way he did, but Soderbergh and Co. had to know that was coming. And for that critical category, why the personnel change? I wonder if Phoenix was late in showing up to present Actress and they had Renee step up at the last second.
