Bigger upset, Colman or Hopkins? What do you guys think? Despite what people would have you believe, Colman wasn't really an upset. She was always a massive threat to win. She took most of the critics prizes and won at least at every precursor awards show where she was nominated except the SAG. Comedy category or not, it doesn't matter, because she was there giving speeches and people were falling in love with her. Even when Close won the SAG, Colman took the BAFTA right after. And while people dismissed that as hometown bias, The Favourite was still nominated for ten Oscars and The Wife was not. It's just that people got so caught up in the "It's Glenn's time!" narrative that they were ignoring the very real signs that Colman had strong momentum. Hopkins won the BAFTA but Boseman won all the other notable precursors (though it should be noted that Ma Rainey missing Best Picture and Screenplay categories was a sign that the Academy didn't embrace the film as much as expected, especially as both prizes should by rights have been slam dunks for nominations). And the expectation was that there was no way that they would deign to deny Boseman the last chance to recognize a man whose loss clearly affected the industry deeply. But once again, looking back, the signs were there. The Father did very well with nominations, Ahmed was always a strong contender funneling votes the whole way through (him winning the Spirit Award is what made me feel an upset was even more likely, although seeing them switch the category presentation order at the ceremony made me think they had some sort of inside info, lol). So by definition, Hopkins winning was the far bigger upset because Boseman had stronger momentum and a stronger narrative, in a film that was more popular than Close's. But it wasn't out of nowhere.
