Regardless of how it pans out, No flippin’ way this is worse than Temple of Doom. Temple of Doom has its annoyances (Willie Scott) and its unfortunate racist overtones, but it also has some of the most bravura action sequences of Spielberg's career.

Up to 59% on RT... could end up fresh in the end. Now watch it dip back to rotten by the time the film releases lol

Up to 59% on RT... could end up fresh in the end. Now watch it dip back to rotten by the time the film releases lol It started low because it was originally screened for the Cannes crowd. The more mainstream, less uptight critics probably see it as something light and fluffy. I think it's probably going to continue to go up. Don't expect 75% or better. I would be shocked if it hit 70%.

Whatever happens with this movie, at the very least it'll give us a new score by the greatest composer of all time. Because

Regardless of how it pans out, No flippin’ way this is worse than Temple of Doom. If you go into every movie thinking this life gets a lot better.

Damn, up to 66% now with 150 reviews. To think that it debuted with 33% last month..... not sure I've ever seen an increase like that before.

I think it was originally screened for the wrong audience. The movie wasn't made to win film festival awards or have deep meaning, but to entertain. I said earlier on this thread, the Tomato score is going to go upward and it has. If it reaches 70% or better, it surpassed by expectation.

Soundtrack now available
Obsessed with "To Athens," must be a traveling map cue.
"Battle of Syracuse" is the most badass sounding thing he's done in so long. John Williams doing a Lalo Schifrin impression for Indiana Jones of all things is so satisfying.

Just discovered that Anthony Ingruber acts as Ford’s double in the 1944 scenes. He also has a bit part as one of the bidders during the auction scene, where I thought I recognized him while watching it, but I didn’t know he was a double as well. For those who don’t know, he became known online for his impressions of Ford and his resemblance to him, but he also went on to actually play a young version of Ford's character in The Age of Adaline. A lot of fans then wanted him to be cast as young Han Solo, which obviously didn’t happen, but it was fun seeing him pop up here.

Listened to the whole soundtrack (N/S the movie so this is just about the album) and really dug it - nobody does it like JW. I have only one qualm with it: the track 'Auction at Hotel L'Atlantique' literally turns into "The Adventues of Tintin" halfway through. I'm more than fine with Williams quoting himself - and there're multiple instances on the album where that happens - but that one's a bit too much. I dunno how (and if) it's used in the movie itself but it seems like someone just put "Tintin" as a temp track and then they decided to just kinda leave it as such, merely disguising it. But that's the only thing, and it's not even that big of a thing. The rest is kind of terrific. Love 'Helena's Theme' and all its variations, love the action stuff, love the menacing stuff. Can't wait to hear it all in context.

Because I need to get in on this, it feels so good to hear John Williams in a theater again. But it’s also bittersweet because, depending on what happens in the future, it may be the last time I ever hear him at the movies.

So what are we hoping the MacGuffin will be this time? Another religious artifact ( Spear of Destiny/Holy Lance, Shroud of Turin, Cross of Christ, etc.), or something different like the lost city of Atlantis? Just remembered that this is actually the artifact that Indy is going after in the opening sequence of the film!

I dunno how (and if) it's used in the movie itself but it seems like someone just put "Tintin" as a temp track and then they decided to just kinda leave it as such, merely disguising it. I can say with some certainty that the situation is the following: JW doesn't have the stamina he used to, or the tolerance for seeing his more intricately written music (especially action sequences) cut up or drowned out in the finished project. So he authorized Bill Ross, who at this point is basically his amanuensis, to handle many sequences in the movie, most obviously the opening sequence - not to write original music, but to cobble together bits and pieces of previous JW scores into an effective Frankenstein cue. This was all performed and recorded anew - you can tell easily from the improved sound quality, transitions, and a few reworked passages. Thankfully there's still plenty of genuinely newly composed and fabulous JW score here.

I wouldn't be surprised if William Ross did some Chamber of Secrets-esque adaptation work with those old cues, especially in the prologue. But it could also just be Mangold falling in love with the temp a little too hard. I think the Tintin crib is def still JW. I also didn't realize how much of a spoiler this is but now having seen the film, I realize "Battle of Syracuse" is more Alex North than Lalo Schifrin! I'm not sure they're historically in the same period lol but Spartacus must have been on Johnny's mind, surely.
