I still have zero excitement for this so hopefully it can end up being a nice surprise that exceeds my expectations.

What are the locations for this? One thing Lucas always did well was having different locations in all his blockbusters for both this and Star Wars. Middle East for Raiders, India for ToD, Europe for Last Crusade, and South America for Crystal Skull.

James Mangold Explains How Time Has Changed Indiana JonesEver since this movie was announced, it’s been an easy target and the butt of a lot of jokes... but the more I hear Mangold talk about it, the more confidence I have in it turning out to be good (though I’ve always had faith in Mangold making something out of this that was at least decent). He really seems to have a clear vision for how he wanted to approach the character at this point in time, knowing precisely how to build a movie around the character’s age, from dealing with his place in a more modern world, down to the physical action stuff.

I've never even been that big an Indiana Jones fan but this trailer is really hitting those nostalgic feels. Hope the movie turns out as good as it looks

Disney has somehow made Kingdom of the Crystal Skull look good in comparison. Impressive.

Disney has somehow made Kingdom of the Crystal Skull look good in comparison. Impressive. It's been Spielberg's and Lucas's plan all along. Justice for KOTCS!

Disney has somehow made Kingdom of the Crystal Skull look good in comparison. Impressive. We haven’t even seen it yet I don't need to. The ugly trailers and tepid reviews (even the bought and paid for ones) tell me everything I need to know about this soulless tripe.

Looks like the main criticism is that it’s too safe (so basically like The Force Awakens). Also seeing some complaints about overreliance on CGI (*sigh*), and apparently the best set pieces are early on in the film, with the action becoming more conventional later on. A little disappointed with the reception so far, but not crushed. The elements praised in the more positive reviews (even in the lukewarm ones) give me hope that I might still like this.

Also seeing some complaints about overreliance on CGI (*sigh*), That’s been my biggest issue from the trailers. Looks too digital in places. Im worried, but I refuse to believe that this is worse, or anywhere near as bad as Temple of Doom.

45% on RT from 20 reviews. Sad Ford's farewell is ending up as a bitter one.

Reading through more of the reviews, and to me this actually feels more similar to Spectre (but with a franchise-redeeming intention similar to The Force Awakens) than Rise of Skywalker. Like Bond, the Indiana Jones movies are defined by formula... but Star Wars isn’t necessarily. The SW sequel trilogy chose to go the safe and uncreative route when there was literally an entire universe of possibilities. Bond and Indiana Jones, on the other hand, present filmmakers with the problem of either adhering too close to the formula and appearing lazy/uninspired, or taking more risks but straying too far from the formula and alienating fans because it no longer feels like a Bond/Indiana Jones movie (*cough*No Time to Die*cough*)... so it’s a trickier tightrope to walk with those franchises imo because there’s more of a pre-defined set of expectations that go along with them.
In this case, Mangold leaned heavily into the formula, and a lot of critics are finding it too safe and dutiful in its box-checking. Similarly, Spectre was criticized for seeming like a Bond greatest hits collection and for falling back into the Bond formula after Casino Royale and Skyfall had done something different... but as someone who (kind of) likes Spectre even with its flaws, I think how you respond to it depends on how much affection you already have for the Bond formula itself, to what extent you enjoy the movies as comfort food rather than something necessarily challenging... and I think the same idea applies to the Indiana Jones films as well. Basically, I can see myself still enjoying Dial of Destiny because I know the elements I already expect and want in an Indiana Jones movie will be there, and in the specific cases of Indiana Jones and James Bond, I enjoy those particular formulas and am willing to embrace them... whereas I felt more frustrated with Rise of Skywalker because of all the directions it could have gone in, it chose the most boring one possible and devolved into formula when there didn’t have to be one.
Because I’m seeing a lot of comparisons to Force Awakens, which obviously had much better reception than this, part of me wonders if Dial of Destiny might have been better received if it had been released like a decade ago, before people became tired of nostalgia-driven fan-servicey legacy sequels.

Also kind of surprised The Film Stage of all places gave this a semi-positive review...

Up to 59% on RT... could end up fresh in the end.
