This is a good day for the U.K with 40% of the acting nominations going to British actors, the most it's been for many years. Actually, with two Koreans and a Bulgarian to the mix, the majority of the acting nominees are non-Americans. The majority of the directors is foreign too.

I feel like the person most thankful for that Stanfield nomination (other than Stanfield himself) is Sacha Baron Cohen. Kaluuya might actually have a vote-splitting situation with his co-star that gives Cohen the Oscar. That doesn’t really make sense to me. People are going to specially want to reward Judas so there will be vote splitting between those 2?

After two decades, Richard Farnsworth's record has at last been obliterated. Anthony Hopkins now stands as the oldest man nominated in Best Actor.

Time for the think pieces You know what, how's about a thinkpiece about goddamn category fraud? That one would be fair.

Time for the think pieces about Ma Rainey, and One Night in Miami missing, even though The Father and Sound of Metal are better films. Nah, I think the thinkpieces will be about Mank or Chicago 7 instead of The Father and Sound of Metal. I don't see anyone having a problem with SoM getting in, in fact it'll be probably one of the most celebrated nominees. But in reality, those are the films that get in over them, Mank and Chicago 7 were secure by any measure. I agree though that will probably be the approach.

I can’t be too mad about the category fraud because WB actually did the right thing and campaigned Stanfield in lead so this was just The Academy being weird.

I am incensed that Better Days received a nomination. That movie is a plagiarising embarassment. Hope it gets disqualified.

Stanfield was even campaigned as Lead. I wonder how Academy voters concluded he was supporting.

I guess it depends on how you think of Steven Yeun - I consider him an American. This would make a 50/50 mix, with 10 American and 10 non-American Acting nominees.

The Directors Branch continues to be (by far) the coolest of the Branches.

People are going to specially want to reward Judas so there will be vote splitting between those 2? I don't neccesarily buy that they'll want to reward Judas. Bigger and more succesful films with AMPAS have gotten a ton of nominations and walked away with zero Oscars ( The Irishman, The Color Purple, American Hustle etc ).Of course Kaluuya is the favorite and likely still wins, but Stanfield feels like an interesting wrinkle, because he wasn't being predicted anywhere (especially in this category). So we have idea how close his performance is to Kaaylua in the eyes of Academy voters, and how many votes that might siphon from him. Listen, we don't get many upsets or surprise wins these days, so maybe I'm just trying to make this race seem more exciting than it actually is

Wow, the Lakeith nom has to be one of the biggest WTF noms in recent memory. No precursors and not even in the category he was campaigned in. Insane category fraud too, but I’m not mad at it!
I also love that Glenda hung on and got the nom.

Pinocchio in costume design was a shock. Anyone see this movie yet? It came out in Italy in 2019 so I count it as a 2019 film.

It's laughable that The Personal History of David Copperfield missed production design and costume design.

And Amy Adams was born in Italy. Steven Yeun is 100% American. He has dual citizenship like Sandra Bullock does. If you have any doubt about him being American or not you are a racist. It's that simple.
