What's up with this guy? Into the Wild was so good. I feel like there's a fair amount of knife-sharpening out for Penn, especially after The Last Face fell on its ass. He was going to have to come back with a knockout punch, and it sounds like this film isn't nearly that bad, but not nearly good enough to warrant a comeback narrative. Whoops. That’s what I get for posting right before I was leaving. Was trying to fill in time, so I wouldn’t get there too early. Oh well, still better the reception to The Last Face.

Someone at Rotten Tomatoes is clearly doing Penn (or more likely Flag Day's distribution company) a big favor to keep it at that healthy looking 80% as well for as long as they can, because they instantly added all the "fresh" reviews and suddenly stopped adding any more as soon as more clear pans started showing up like: There are enough published reviews out now that it probably should be in the 50's or so on RT. Maybe lower. Edit. RT has just added Slant's 1 star review to bring it down to 67%. But it does feel like they are going out of their way not to take it into Rotten territory by avoiding all the other negative published reviews . They'll have to add them eventually, but I guess they want to help Flag Day to avoid headlines saying it has a low Rotten score at this stage of the festival.

Murukami is all the rage but I still haven't really dipped my toe into his work, and while I respected Burning I can't say I liked it. But this sounds intriguing, even if the runtime is a bit daunting.

Virginie Efira is winning Best Actress, y'all.

Virginie Efira is wining Best Actress, y'all. Don't be so sure. This fest is already shaping up to be a bloodbath for Best Actress, and I could easily see Verhoeven getting in for Best Director or the film getting something like a Jury Prize or something. But already we've got Renata Reinsve, Valeria Bruno Tedeschi and Sophie Marceau all getting sizable raves, and there's still folks like Swinton and Seydoux (each of whom have multiple films at the festival) coming down the pike. Hell, there's a very real chance that Spike recognizes the history of black actresses at Cannes (only one has ever won, and that was a shared prize) and that gives momentum to Achouackh Abakar Souleymane for Lingui.

Hamaguchi NEVER misses! I think Happy Hour and Asako I & II are both note perfect, and I’m glad this one seems to be just as good! Manifesting he wins something big in addition to the Silver Bear he just won at Berlin this year.

Pretty incredible that Grace Of Monaco got 9% on Rotten Tomatoes....yet Nicole Kidman still got a SAG Best Actress Nomination for it. GOAT shit! 🐐

Bergman Island reactions are in, and Vicky Krieps enters the Best Actress race at Cannes: Happy for Vicky Krieps. Gave the best performance in Phantom Thread and probably deserved the Best Actress Oscar. It was a disgrace that she wasn't even nominated, when all the main elements of the film (including her better known co-stars) were nominated.

It was a disgrace that she wasn't even nominated, when all the main elements of the film (including her better known co-stars) were nominated. I adore Vicky Krieps and she's my runner-up that year behind McDormand's all-timer of a performance, but that race was always going to be a tough sell because she was a complete unknown going up against Oscar favorites and A-listers. McDormand, Hawkins, Robbie, Ronan, Streep. That has a strong argument for being the strongest lineup that category had the whole decade (even if I personally would only keep McDormand and Robbie in my lineups). And unfortunately, as great as Krieps was, the narrative wasn't focused on her for that film. That said, I'm glad they didn't shunt her into Best Supporting Actress. I wouldn't want someone like Manville to miss out to some category-frauding bullshit. This way, Manville gets her just recognition and Krieps has staked herself as an actress to keep an eye on, and the next time she does something baity, that'll be fuel for the fire.

But this sounds intriguing, even if the runtime is a bit daunting. I've read two of his (1Q84 and Sputnik Sweetheart), and I find him to be an interesting - but cold - author. He has ideas and things to say, but the books feel distant and emotionless.

Hamaguchi Ryusuke's film Drive My Car getting raves in first reactions and reviews Awesome news! Murukami is an author I'm only vaguely familiar with, but I've been meaning to get into more of his work. This sounds like a solid adaptation.

Ouch for Flag Day Penn didn't have great time at Cannes Flag Day is 38% on Rotten Tomatoes now. www.rottentomatoes.com/m/flag_day_2021/reviews?intcmp=rt-scorecard_tomatometer-reviewsGuess it reached a point where they could no longer ignore all the negative reviews. Wonder where Penn goes from here, as both a filmmaker and an actor (he got a lot of pans for his performance, as well as some praise). Nothing has flat out worked for him in a big way since Milk (well Tree Of Life was a big critical success, but Malick pretty much sidelined him in the film). That was 13 years ago. I think his best bet is relying on his friendships and connections to snag some juicy supporting roles and try to make them work. No idea how viable he is as a director now. The Last Face and Flag Day are to pretty sizable critical failures in a row (though obviously The Last Face was a different level of bomb).

Needs to do something.
