A couple of stats:
* Julia Ducournau is the first female director to win the Palme since Jane Campion, the second overall, and the first to do it without tying (as The Piano tied with Farewell My Concubine).
* Leos Carax is the first winner of Best Director to win for an opening film.

Based on the rumours that 9 films are getting awarded today, I think there’s a tie AND a Special Award (ala The Image Book and It Must Be Heaven). Here’s my guesses: Palme d’Or - TITANE by Julia Ducournau Grand Prix - DRIVE MY CAR by Ryusuke Hamaguchi Prix du Jury - MEMORIA by Apichatpong Weerasethakul and A HERO by Asghar Farhadi Best Director - Nadav Lapid for AHED’S KNEE
Best Actor - Caleb Landry Jones for NITRAM Best Actress - Renate Reinsve for THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD Best Screenplay - Andris Feldmanis, Livia Ulman and Juho Kuosmanen COMPARTMENT NO.6 Special Award - ANNETTE by Leos Carax You got some categories wrong, but still managed to predict all the nine winning films correctly. That's really impressive.

Well, that's a wrap. Gonna be interesting to see which films will be able to survive Oscar season.

Honestly the only one that might get Oscar nominated in the big categories from the winners is Renate Reinsve as a passion pick, but even that seems unlikely. A Hero, Titane and maybe even Ahed's Knee could get in Foreign Language Film.

A Hero, Titane and maybe even Ahed's Knee could get in Foreign Language Film. Titane would be too buck-wild for the Academy to go near, even with their sometimes inspired International Feature nominations. I also think that Reinsve needs to be a massive critical favorite to stand a chance, but like you say, it's unlikely even if she is. But she does have Neon backing her, which is nice. Jones's film is going to engender too much controversy and I don't see them going for him, but it definitely raises his profile for the very near future, as he's got some promising projects in the pipeline. I think the Farhadi's a good bet, though.

Happy for Vicky Krieps. Gave the best performance in Phantom Thread and probably deserved the Best Actress Oscar. It was a disgrace that she wasn't even nominated, when all the main elements of the film (including her better known co-stars) were nominated. I adore Vicky Krieps and she's my runner-up that year behind McDormand's all-timer of a performance, but that race was always going to be a tough sell because she was a complete unknown going up against Oscar favorites and A-listers. McDormand, Hawkins, Robbie, Ronan, Streep. That has a strong argument for being the strongest lineup that category had the whole decade (even if I personally would only keep McDormand and Robbie in my lineups). And unfortunately, as great as Krieps was, the narrative wasn't focused on her for that film. That said, I'm glad they didn't shunt her into Best Supporting Actress. I wouldn't want someone like Manville to miss out to some category-frauding bullshit. This way, Manville gets her just recognition and Krieps has staked herself as an actress to keep an eye on, and the next time she does something baity, that'll be fuel for the fire. Turns out DDL himself was really pissed that that Krieps wasn't nominated, according to Krieps herself.

Mmm never thought of that, but Original Screenplay feels like a wasteland in terms of Best Picture nominees, compared to Adapted Screenplay that I could see it since the screenwriters branch does seem like a branch that would be open to something like Annette. It depends on how much Amazon decides to campaign though as C’mon C’mon, Flee, A Hero, and Mass also seem like screenplays that could be in play for the spots that don’t go to BP-nominated films.

I’m a bit late, but here’s a few thoughts on the festival and the winner: -After the excellent Berlinale, Cannes didn’t disappoint, the quality of the movies was pretty high and there were only a couple of disappointing projects. -The digital component of the festival was rather messy as you were supposed to book tickets at 7am but every time the site went on crash and tickets would get available only a few hours from the screening. -I don’t get the various criticisms about the salivar COVID-19 testing, it was very quick and you would get the results just after a couple of hours. -I got the chance to attend 4 World Premieres (Titane, Memoria, France and Nitram) at the Grand Lumiere and it was such a great experience, I’ve never been in a movie theatre that big, there were more than 3000 seats and the four screenings were almost sold out. -I’m quite happy for the winners, I didn’t love Titane as many others but it was an inspiring pick and I’m also glad that A Hero, Memoria and Annette got something. -Caleb Landry Jones was terrific in Nitram but i would have preferred another winner like Jadidi, Driver or Simon Rex. I’m quite disappointed that Red Rocket hasn’t won anything, i loved the movie and Rex was so damn good, he had such a magnetic presence that you couldn’t take your eyes off him.
