2020 Best Picture and Best Director nominee Spike Lee re-confirmed as jury prez: Oscar-winning director Spike Lee has been re-named jury president for the 73rd annual Cannes Film Festival. The festival is set to take place this July. Lee will not only be the first African-American to serve as jury president for the festival, but also the first person from the African diaspora. Lee has had seven films that have premiered at Cannes over the years, including “Do the Right Thing,” “Jungle Fever” “Summer of Sam,” and “BlacKkKlansman.”
“To me the Cannes Film Festival (besides being the most important film festival in the world — no disrespect to anybody) has had a great impact on my film career. You could easily say Cannes changed the trajectory of who I became in world cinema,” Lee said via official announcement earlier this morning. “It started way back in 1986 — my first feature film ‘She’s Gotta Have It,’ which won the Prix de la Jeunesse in the Directors’ Fortnight. The next joint was in 1989 — “Do the Right Thing,” an Official Selection in Competition. And I don’t have the time nor space to write about the cinematic explosion that jumped off, still relative to this, 30 years later,” Lee said.www.worldofreel.com/blog/2021/3/d94czeowx9vdgj8e9j51xp1xe8hnsb

World of Reel's guesses ............and some info on Tragedy of Macbeth status as well: Annette (Leos Carax) Benedetta (Paul Verhoeven) The French Dispatch (Wes Anderson) Three Floors (Nanni Moretti) Memoria (Apichatpong Weerasethakul) Bergman Island (Mia Hansen-Love) Flag Day (Sean Penn) A Hero (Asghar Farhadi) Stillwater (Tom McCarthy) Drive My Car (Ryusuke Hamaguchi) Baglilik Hasan (Semih Kaplanoglu) Petrov’s Flu (Kirill Serebrennikov) Ahed’s Knee (Nadav Lapid) The Restless (Joachim Lafosse) The Eternal Daughter (Joanna Hogg) Nobody’s Hero (Alain Guiraudie) In Front of Your Face (Hong Sang-soo) De Son Vivant (Emmanuelle Bercot) The Worst Person In The World (Joachim Trier) For Better Or For Worse (Stephane Brize) Notice, the absence of Joel Coen’s “The Tragedy of Macbeth.” Last I heard, there was a very contentious back-and-forth going on between Apple/A24 and the Cannes selection committee. The crux of the matter seems to have to do with, wait for it, whether the film will be getting a theatrical release in France before its inevitable premiere on the Apple TV streaming service. Regardless, ‘Macbeth’ could still make it to Cannes this July, but it’s all up in the air at this point in time.www.worldofreel.com/blog/2021/6/bfqy1q8yntw4nak0h3rgezo3m7ro1w

It would be so Cannes and Fremaux to give a slot to Bercot and snub Claire Denis for the umpteenth time. But it would be good for me so I could potentially see her movie in Venice?

Wait, Hogg has another movie coming out this year? For a second there I thought The Souvenir Part II had been retitled, but apparently she's got two ready to go. I hadn't heard about that one, that's cool.

I hadn't heard about that one, that's cool. I believe Hogg cranked this one out during quarantine, same as Ben Wheatley did for In the Earth.

Not sure how the British movies will work around the quarantine restrictions for people entering France from the UK.

a shame the new Zhang Yimou has already released in China. That would've been a catch. I don't think it went to any festivals at all... (?)

That one is a no go......@cannes Park Chan-wook’s "Decision to Leave" won't be at Cannes. Korean news has confirmed that the film wasn’t submitted because it just isn’t ready. They don't know whether it will be ready this year or not, but a Venice premiere could still be on the table.

Can we please find a way to end Fremaux's boner for Sean Penn's movies? I think it's hilarious that after The Last Face was so thoroughly scourged by everyone, Penn still wants to go to Cannes and premiere his film in competition. I actually think there's an amazing Birdman-esque movie to be made about that, where Penn plays himself without any shame or self-awareness.
