Matt Damon apparently teared up during the standing ovation at the Stillwater premiere.
Didn't expect this.

Oh honeys, Marion arriving in true Movie Star style at Cannes! I love her sunglasses and wrapper... She could have really rocked this look with a white towel turban on her head.

I don’t expect it to win anything at Cannes just because there’s so many other films in competition, and I expect this jury might want to spread the wealth more so I only see like one American film winning anything. However, i feel it’s definitely not going to be a bomb like The Last Face because I don’t think Fremaux would have gave it a competition spot even with him trying to get as many stars as he could to come to Cannes especially this year. (Before someone brings it up, yes I think Penn is still considered a star at least in the film festival world. He’s still respected enough and known enough at least with old people like me, lol, primarily because of being married to Madonna.) Plus MGM scooped it up, and they’re currently having quite the year with Soggy Bottom, House of Gucci, Cyrano, etc. Maybe on par with The Pledge in that it’s respected but not something like Into the Wild.

Hope Lea gets well soon ( good news she's asymptomatic ). Was looking forward to see her in the red carpet 4 times and be the queen of this Cannes edition. Anyways, looks like Swinton will be the busiest woman this time around with 5 films, here's with her daughter after presenting Souvenir Part II

She’s just in The Souvenir: Part II, Memoria and The French Dispatch, right?

Tilda's in five films this year at Cannes? Is that a record? I suppose, maybe in the next days when she presents one of them in the official competition it will be more of a talking point. DanQuixote Also Souvenir Part I is presented as part of the Director's Fortnight ( never got an official release in that country) and I suppose the other Joanna Hogg film as well. Btw, I got this from a Variety article

Reviews for Flag Day are starting to come in. Seen some who hate it, but so far it seems to be getting praised, Again it’s early still. Still don’t see if going beyond like the Gothams and Spirits maybe, but Dylan Penn seems like the type who could win some newcomer awards or at least be in the running since so many critics groups do nominations now.

Flag Day reactions seem pretty rough so far, but I haven't seen all of them.
Hollywood Reporter says the screenplay is pedestrian, Dylan Penn is "fine" , it's full of "indie film clichés and isn't particularly memorable
Variety is kinder though
But then The Telegraph gives it a 2/5

Sounds like Rylance Punk’d Penn. ........maybe..........I don't know whoever told Sean Penn he could direct ............although officially it's at 80% atm on 5 reviews...........we'll see how low it goes.......at the moment it's ahead of Stillwater but well behind the mighty Annette - still at 90% www.rottentomatoes.com/m/flag_day_2021

What's up with this guy? Into the Wild was so good. I feel like there's a fair amount of knife-sharpening out for Penn, especially after The Last Face fell on its ass. He was going to have to come back with a knockout punch, and it sounds like this film isn't nearly that bad, but not nearly good enough to warrant a comeback narrative.
