Doesn't matter who wins. Clinton and Trump split in 2016.... the people here would try to make it seem Clinton was the winner.
Trump still dominates the media. And more coverage is always a good thing for him, and benefits him more than Biden. Regardless of if this is bad or unfavorable press, it's still press.
The president who wins the media usually wins the election. Reagan, Clinton, Obama, Trump. The only presidents who maybe weren't media friendly were the Bushes, but then.... one of the competition was John Kerry - not the media type of president either.

Both often seem to struggle to articulate a coherent thought. I don't think the debate will at all be the decider for the vast majority of people.

Trump really knows how to read a room and is a great debater. That being said, his attacks on Biden so far have been awful. If his go to attack is ”Do you really want Biden as your president with his socialist agenda” or something along those lines, then it’ll be a huge missed opportunity for him.
Biden was a great debater back then, but it’s clear that he’s regressed in his ability to debate. Like redhawk said, Trump can’t put together a coherent thought, but Biden takes it to a whole other level. My non political friends can’t believe how much of a babbling mess he is.
Unless it’s an absolute bloodbath (which I thought it would be until Trump started making shitty attacks), these debates won’t really have an impact.

Both often seem to struggle to articulate a coherent thought. And this is part of what many people attracts to Trump cause they can identify more with him.

These debates are going to be ugly and will sink Biden. I’ve said it before and I will say it again, this is going to make Jeb! look like child’s play

In a world where Biden wins the election, Trump gets a temporary uptick in the debates but loses anyways. In a world where Trump wins the election, the debates don't matter either way. In either case, the debates can only hurt Biden but not by enough to shift the ultimate outcome.

“I’m looking forward to getting on the debate stage with Trump and holding him accountable,” Biden said during a virtual fundraiser. “I think I know how to handle bullies. We’ll find out.” He added: “I hope I don’t get baited into getting into a brawl with this guy.” www.foxnews.com/politics/biden-hopes-baited-brawl-trump-debates

Hmmmmm......debate next Tuesday/less than 40 days to go.......now debates look kinda huge with Breonna Taylor, Covid, SCOTUS in this news cycle - the state of things suggests Trump may physically strike Biden if he can't frustrate him or something : * Trump seems to have all sorts of momentum in trends to me but maybe that's just enough to have him lose by a closer margin. In the last 2 days, there have been polls showing Trump leading TX, FL, GA, and AZ (what?) have come out....huge enthusiastic crowds in recent appearances.......confirming a Supreme Court nominee in 2 days which I see as clearly in Trump's favor tbh .....he himself has been at his loosest and cockiest playing to the crowd this week.......his work ethic to campaign daily is almost ............evil. * Biden.......um, really low energy appearances, bordering on embarrassing even, he runs out of gas at 25 minutes at best.....Harris is still MIA (what a disastrous pick it seems ), on the other hand, the polls still favor him everywhere with some outliers and at least have a much clearer pathway to a win.......and people are motivated by their dislike of Trump so how much energy does he need anyway in appearances ..........and with 200,000 + dead of COVID?

Trump may have set a trap for himself. If Biden performs reasonably well at the debates, the whole "Sleepy Joe" narrative gets put to bed, which is the only attack Trump has really been able to make given Biden's low-key campaign.

All Biden needs to do is remain relatively coherent with an occasional dash of righteous anger. The reason moderates and independents are supporting him is because he's made himself a safe and stabilizing alternative to Trump. There's no shortage of ammunition--200K dead Americans, the riots, Trump's trying to undermine the election, and now SCOTUS (which is a bad thing for Republicans... the country doesn't want a conservative majority or for the senate to push through a nominee). Biden hasn't had a whiff of controversy for months and Trump hasn't had a single major victory.
Biden has actually seen upticks in Georgia (a two-point race) and Ohio (a less than half a point race). SCOTUS probably has something to do with it. Dems are going to be energized over this issue and moderates are going to be leery of a SCOTUS potentially looking to overturn Roe and ACA. Biden needs to hit that home, that both of those are in danger.

As others have said, as long as there aren’t a bunch of gaffes or a few standout ones, Biden should be alright. Don’t fall into Trumps traps of making the debate turn personal. Stick to the issues, relate a lot of it back to the major issues that are occurring in America at the moment under Trumps leadership, and Biden will do just fine.

Classic......if true...... Pat Ward @warddpatrick
The Trump campaign wants the Biden campaign to allow a third party to inspect the ears of the debaters for electronic devices or transmitters. The President has consented to this inspection, but Biden has not – so far. (2/3)
The Biden campaign requested two breaks (one every thirty minutes) during tonight’s program, which was denied by their Trump counterparts, in negotiations over the last several weeks. (3/3)

Going to be hard to for Trump to go on the offensive with the tax dodging revelations.

Trump's plan is clearly to create as much as possible, and Wallace is só far being unable to reign him in.

I decided months ago that I would leave the top of the ballot blank this election and um absolutely nothing is changing tonight..........one is a noxious bully in way over his head and one is spouting Hallmark card platitudes from his dementia addled brain. A pox on both their houses.....

Trump is acting even more like a small angry child than usual. I don’t know how anyone watching this can come away with any positive opinions on him.
