Lemme throw some shade here: this is the worst month in the history of the criterion collection...

Lemme throw some shade here: this is the worst month in the history of the criterion collection... I haven't seen a single one of these, but they certainly don't tickle me much. I'd be interested in Buck and the Preacher conceptually, but it's from the director of Ghost Dad...

it's from the director of Ghost Dad... What a strange way to refer to Sidney Poitier. What a perfectly valid way of referring to the director of Ghost Dad. His abilities as an actor do not necessarily translate to talent as a director. He also made A Piece of the Action, and it is just as bad as Ghost Dad. Neither of those make me excited to see more from him.

Frownland! One of my personal favorites. That cover kinda reminds me of a Goosebumps cover though.

Renate Reinsve in the closet! (and thank god I finally know how to pronounce her last name) Nothing too crazy, she has her bases covered with Tarkovsky, Lynch, Denis, Haneke, Bresson, Kiarostami, Bergman, and Jean Renoir. She'd be right at home in MAR with these picks, especially Mulholland Dr. and Certified Copy. Love how she was about to leave until she saw the Bergman trilogy and Renoir boxsets. Yup, gotta have those!

Just saw the announced titles that are coming in October. Arsenic and Old Lace is a must buy for me.
Also coming in October are Lost Highway, Cure, Eve’s Bayou, La Llorona, and a 4k edition of Night of the Living Dead

Cure is great..... but it's up on the Channel already, isn't it? There's a whole treasure of gems Kiyoshi made before Cure, overlooked hard-to-find movies, many are tv movies, and they really need a remaster.... like the Suit Yourself or Shoot Yourself series (bundle 'em) or Sweet Home (a lot to love for horror buffs; fascinating ties to other media; could prob snag Guillermo to promote it).

Cooley High (1975) The Velvet Underground (2021) The Seventh Continent (1989) Benny's Video (1992) 71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance (1994) Loving Couples (1964) Night Games (1966) The Girls (1968) December criterions are no joke! Great additions of classics like Cooley..... great work by Haneke needing remasters (wait till they discover his ten TV movies!!) .....and an unsung female helmer from Sweden, Mai Zetterling whose movies were nearly impossible to find.

another terrific closet video from prickly comedian and WTF-host Marc Maron. Mattsby will appreciate what he has to say about McCabe solid picks overall!

One of the most underrated Westerns in its longer cut, one of the most underrated films by a major US director - ever imo - and a film that was saved by DVD in that longer cut rather than the botched shorter, studio interferred with theatrical cut. I usually rank it among my favorite Westerns for its best moments anyway - just outside of the big modern classic ones tier (The Wild Bunch, The Good, The Bad & The Ugly, OUATITW, McCabe & Mrs. Miller, The Great Silence, Unforgiven etc): July 2, 2024
