No Cannes, no Venice, no TIFF, no NYFF gala...for a filmmaker with such limited commercial success and a film that wrapped in November 2020, that seems suspect. Are they taking this to Berlin or something and releasing it next March or something? Or will this be a Telluride film + NYFF main slate or something like that? You're acting like Phantom Thread didn't skip all festivals and still over performed at the Oscars. I know you don't like modern PTA, but just cool it on the overreactions.

Phantom Thread had DDL's "last movie", and finished filming in like June/July IIRC (as opposed to November of the previous year).

Yeah, I agree it's weird that it's skipping festivals. Phantom Thread could do that because DDL was is in it, and there was the narrative "This is his final film!", so eyes would have always been on this one. What's the big selling point here without the festival buzz?? A movie starring PSH's son as the lead and B.Cooper in a brief supporting role?? Lool

Not much is currently known about Paul Thomas Anderson’s highly anticipated “Soggy Bottom.” What we do know is that it stars Cooper Hoffman, the 18 year old son of the late great Philip Seymour Hoffman, as a child actor in Hollywood in the early 1970s. Bradley Cooper was cast in the film just a few weeks ago and, this past weekend, the 45-year-old actor returned to the set with his Jon Peters-inspired get-up.
There have been rumors pointing towards the character Cooper plays in the film actually being Peters, the producer of 1976’s “A Star is Born,” leading to speculation that this could be about the making of the Streisand-Kristofferson film (cheeky kind-of-casting when you realize Cooper also wrote, directed and starred in his own remake of the film back in 2018). Based on leaked pictures from the secretive set, actress-musician Alana Haim’s does, in fact, look like Barbra Streisand from the same era.
Also seen on-set during the shoot in Encino, California, writer-director-actor-editor Benny Safdie who will play real-life politician Joel Wachs. A Los Angeles Councilmember, Wachs was a closeted gay man with a larger-than-life personality who didn’t come out until the late ‘90s.
Roger Friedman from Showbiz411 just posted more exclusive details about PTA’s latest and it sounds absolutely intriguing.
“Cooper’s character is named Gary, for a reason: his story is modeled on that of producer Gary Goetzman, Tom Hanks’s very successful producing partner. Bradley Cooper plays a producer modeled on Jon Peters, the former hairdresser turned Barbra Streisand lover and producer who was played by Warren Beatty in “Shampoo.”
“Goetzman is one of the liked people in Hollywood. He’s had a string of successes with Hanks and their Playtone company. starting with “Band of Brothers” and “That Thing You Do!” But few know his story of being a child actor and working in films like “Yours Mine & Ours” with Henry Fonda and Lucille Ball; or “Divorce American Style”
So “Soggy Bottom” (if that’s what they really call it) sounds like a continuation in a way of Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” But no one will really know until we see it. Two people I spoke to said that early cuts were very enjoyable. Cross fingers.
“Soggy Bottom” is, without a doubt, the most anticipated movie of the year. IMDB has it listed as having a November 26th, 2021 release date in the United States, U.K. and Canada. That is not surprising news at all since production had officially wrapped in late November on PTA’s ninth feature film. www.worldofreel.com/blog/2021/8/p8jmueg7tfqhsnkalrplid96e3bnid

Jeff Wells addresses the "Soggy Bottom" title situation - should get some interesting chatter in the comments section .... Was it because he hadn’t yet decided on the real title so what the hell? What could Soggy Bottom even mean? Some kind of half-assed metaphor for the culture of the entertainment industry?

"There have been these persistent rumours about Paul Thomas Anderson’s upcoming “Soggy Bottom” being a return to the same style he adopted in his 1997 breakthrough, “Boogie Nights,” and 1999’s “Magnolia.” This means a mosaic cast of characters and storylines that eventually intertwine and connect with each other. In “Boogie Nights,” PTA was inspired by the cinema of his mentor, Robert Altman, who passed away in 2006. He’s dabbled around with different influences since then; the likes of Stanley Kubrick, Max Ophuls and Jonathan Demme have all played a key role in shaping PTA’s post-Magnolia style of filmmaking. However, it’s Altman who has had the biggest impact. In fact, to receive insurance for the shoot of his final film, 2006’s “A Prairie Home Companion,” a dying Altman hired PTA as a "backup" director to observe filming at all times and be prepared to take over for the seriously ill Altman.Back to “Soggy Bottom,” we don’t know anything about the plot, but what we do know is that it being very much in the spirit of ”Boogie Nights” and “Magnolia” means there will be an assortment of characters played by actors such as Bradley Cooper, Sean Penn, Benny Safdie, Alana Haim, Skyler Gisondo, and, most intriguingly, Cooper Hoffman (son of the late great Phillip Seymour Hoffman)." I wrote back in July —“Soggy Bottom” is, without a doubt, the most anticipated movie of the year. IMDB has it listed as having a November 26th, 2021 release date in the United States, U.K. and Canada. That is not surprising news at all since production had officially wrapped in late November on PTA’s ninth feature film.” “Little is known about director Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest, except that it is set in Los Angeles’s San Fernando Valley during the 1970s and centers on a high school student who is also a child actor. Bradley Cooper was cast in the film just a few weeks ago and, this past weekend, the 45-year-old actor returned to the set with his Jon Peters-inspired get-up.” “There have been rumors pointing towards the character Cooper plays in the film actually being Peters, the producer of 1976’s “A Star is Born,” leading to speculation that this could be about the making of the Streisand-Kristofferson film (cheeky kind-of-casting when you realize Cooper also wrote, directed and starred in his own remake of the film back in 2018). A Los Angeles Councilmember, Wachs was a closeted gay man with a larger-than-life personality who didn’t come out until the late ‘90s.” “Phillip Seymour Hoffman son, Cooper Alexander Hoffman is in the film as well, possibly as the lead. The casting of Cooper is quite touching when you come to realize that his father and PTA had a legendary four-film director-actor partnership (“Magnolia,” “Boogie Nights,” “Punch-Drunk Love,” and “The Master.”) Hoffman Jr. is not a trained actor, he doesn’t even have an IMDB page to his name, and we don’t really know if he has landed a prominent role in “Soggy Bottom,” but this is the kind of casting that can’t help but put a smile on any movie fan’s face. “Principal Photography on “Soggy Bottom” began around 6 months ago, with a shooting schedule of 3+ months expected. They seemed to have barely made that deadline. Everyone, from the cast to the crew, has been COVID tested weekly. on-set There was no stage shooting planned for the film, as everything has already been shot on location — I expected nothing else from PTA.” www.worldofreel.com/blog/2021/8/r6kydvhk85oy7imownt1af1t16g9if

Sean Penn is really in this movie, or is he just speculating based on that picture of Penn on set (which felt more like a visit from someone who's not in the cast)??

I'm starting to think that MGM could decide to prioritize House of Gucci and also Cyrano (after the Telluride buzz) over PTA and even delay it to 2022, despite a release date has been announced.
I can't see MGM deciding to push three movies.

I can't see MGM deciding to push three movies. ^ Would really doubt this. You never know it's "possible" I guess - but its doubtful because they have been burned by how they've handled movies just in the past few months and their movies go across categories: I mean they fell flat on their face with Flag Day and Respect and they delayed Respect last year. They think they have at least 2 BP threats but 0 locks and 2 Best Actor threats (with Driver - who people aren't even mentioning now for some reason - is he in or out people pick a lane MAR ). I'm pretty sure that they don't buy that "Smith/Cumberbatch/Washington/DiCap/Cooper" narrative - they think they have maybe TWO of those spots - which Netflix does too - (they BOTH may be deluding themselves but.....) .... They are looking at Netflix with 2 heavy hitters already (or possibly as many as what - 4? ) and their saying "Fnck it, this is what we got............and we sink or swim" it doesn't seem so odd because it's not a normal year MGM was just sold remember - there'll be pressure on them to clean the decks of movies that were in the can........and that means delivering on campaigns on set release dates to clear the deck.......dumping their dates now is an option but a less appealing one than it was.......

A longtime, and well-respected, Redditor posted on the Blank Check podcast subreddit a fascinating tidbit about Paul Thomas Anderson’s new movie. Turns out a trailer was secretly premiered before a repertory screening of “American Graffiti”.
“Went to a screening in London of American Graffiti in 35mm. Before the movie they said they had something special to show us. Turns out PTA hand-selected our matinee screening of “American Graffiti” specifically to have the first ever public screening of the Soggy Bottom trailer (that’s not the real title but I won’t spoil it).”
“The trailer ruled and all the rumors seem to be true. PSH’s son is the lead as well as one of the Haim sisters. Bradley Cooper is playing Jon Peters (Star is Born, wink wink). From what I saw in the trailer I can confirm that it says a lot that he chose to screen the trailer in front of American Graffiti.”
“American Graffiti” screened on 35mm in London earlier today. And, yes, there have been persistent rumours that the actual title of PTA’s new movie is “Licorice Pizza.” So, scratch off “Soggy Bottom.”www.worldofreel.com/blog/2021/9/vyxaalrv5fc7mnd1rnpdvu3oktypck
