I'm shocked there's so little discussion of this but is anyone else weirded out by the age gap? Hoffman is playing a 15 year old and Haim is supposed to be in her 20s. PTA answers that question in the Variety review.

Hadn't been too taken with the trailer for this, but with these reviews (and it being PTA, of course) I'm fucking excited. OMG at those reviews, will he finally get the Oscar for original screenplay?

MAR punching bag World of Reel - great for gossip, not so great for movie reviews imo - has reviewed sorta ....Licorice Pizza - so take it for what it's worth..........but I'm not sure where this ends up but I'm also not sure I'd feel this way about it because his taste doesn't overlap with mine much ............sometimes: “Licorice Pizza” is messy, passionate, flawed, brilliant, and, really, just all over the place. It’s going to polarize many. This isn’t going for Oscars, and all the better for it. I don’t consider this to be a review as much as a way for me to put down all the thoughts I have on the film. I’m honestly not quite sure where it ranks in the PTA oeuvre, it’s definitely not as hefty as his best films, but it’s a worthy addition."www.worldofreel.com/blog/2021/11/qglxy64w4jm8ld4ruwxvi92nexefj2Starts at 14 out of 14 on RT...........some of these reviews seem to be cutting PTA a lot of slack that they probably won't be cutting to the next DOR or McKay huh ..........but that comes with the territory he's in ...........no?...............100% atm Not really feeling Alana Haim for a nod yet tbh - I mean it could be it's so sweet she charms them all.......but everybody else going for BA is just "acting" so much more overheated than she seems to here or heavier acting anyway..........we'll see though..........are they gonna nominate 2 pop stars? I say nah ........or at least I say that on November 15th .........ya never know......... www.rottentomatoes.com/m/licorice_pizzaI don't think it matters if she's a pop star. She's no way on the level of Lady Gaga awareness so there could be people who don't even know her. I think she gets in if people are charmed by her in the movie.

Let’s finally make Academy Award Winner Paul Thomas Anderson happen! The ‘meandering’ comments make me doubt its chances of winning Best Picture, but I can definitely see him winning Director or Original Screenplay.

I would weep with joy if this was as good as Punch Drunk Love, but I don't think PTA has it in him, and these wildly effusive scores/reactions only have me suspicious. Meandering and 5/5? Come on. Even if you like a botched exercise like OUATIH, it's a nothing compared to Pulp Fiction. Everybody's lost their damn minds, if they ever even had one.

If it was, Jim Jarmusch and Richard Linklater wouldn't have careers.

Like, I wouldn't call Linklater's Everybody Wants Some!! meandering at all. That movie was focused, and entertaining as hell; much happened, similar to the way Boogie Nights had much story but I would never smear with "meandering". But I would say OUATIH was a meandering mess, and not a good movie despite the occasional felicities. If PTA post-PDL could even make a film on the level of Coffee and Cigarettes I would be impressed. He hasn't.

So far with only 12 reviews at Metacritic, it appears that LP has more 100's than TPOTD. That's pretty impressive. I think the problem with TPOTD will come down to it not being a passion pick.

I haven’t seen it yet obviously but basically everything I’ve read suggests that the film very much acknowledges this and the relationship between them is not romantic, much less sexual. I’ve seen the comparison made to Rushmore once or twice. I swear I read somewhere that they make out.

And OUTAIH was a MASTERPIECE. Your Armond White impression is pathetic.

I never heard of her before she was cast in this. Gaga is a global superstar who everyone already knew before ASIB, even if they weren’t fans of her.

Is anyone else sick to death of the cult of PTA? 5 star letterboxd reviews like it's The Godfather Part II for trifling exercises without 1/10 of the thought of a legit masterpiece like a Godfather or Mulholland or Pulp Fiction. I am fucking sick of this guy and the empty-headed devotion he's inspired.

PTA is around the same level as Stanley Kubrick - perfectly fine, but headscratching in the level of adoration he receives. Ah well. I mean, it's not like he's Godard, Fellini or Scorsese level of bad, so it's all fine by me.

This got a little sidetracked...
PTA's not my favorite director, but I've enjoyed everything I've seen from him. To each his own, you know?
Anyway, I'm really looking forward to this one! Alana & Cooper look great. Definitely one of my most anticipated for the year.

Saw the trailer for this on the big screen for the first time seeing House of Gucci today. Cinematography definitely looked fantastic and it was so intense with Life on Mars blaring on the soundsystem. I get the "is PTA back on coke?" comments now.
