Yeah, this is getting very very positive reactions out of those first couple of screenings. Archie is right, Haim could very well be coming for a nod.

I haven't "liked" a PTA film since Magnolia. This reminds me of his 90s work so I'm looking forward to it.
Haim is getting Ronan in Lady Bird comparisons.

I think Haim's gonna get Vicky Krieps'd, especially in such a murderous year for Best Actress, but I feel she's gonna win a big trifecta award like LAFCA or NYFCC.

The difference between the two though, is that Haim is pretty much universally being singled out as the MVP, whilst Krieps had both DDL and Manville taking a lot of the attention away from her. Plus Krieps was a complete unknown, at least Haim has her music stuff. I also don't really buy the category being 'murderous' anymore. Not with Chastain, Hudson and Comer all flopping, and Blanchett moving to Supporting. It's still somewhat strong, but not what it was a few months ago.

You keep saying flopping, but awards season has barely begun. Word of mouth is that The Last Duel is playing very well with Academy voters. Chastain is still out in force and her film was an early release that could conceivably find life in the screener circle. Hudson, well, I think her biggest problem was that she burned through her narrative too early before the film got bumped, but it's the sort of film/performance that would appeal to the old guard. There is a very good chance one or more of these actresses will back. It's still an intense year because you've got those three, McDormand, Stewart, Reinsve, Cruz, Colman, Gaga, Thompson, Kidman, Mara . . . just because a few undershoot expectations doesn't mean that it isn't still a tough fucking year to crack.

Anyone else see multiple reactions talking about this film being meandering and unfocused, etc.? Alot of "wanted to like it more than I did" type sentiment. And this is from people who rushed to guild screenings.

Unfortunately, as much as I like it, I think it's gonna get Steve Jobs'd. When a movie that was positioned as a mainstream thing flops commercially like that it just has the stench of failure around it. I see it getting techs and maybe Affleck sneaks in. Like Steve Jobs it's going to be one of those thing where people watch it in 5 years and go "hey this is good, why didn't it get awards?" with the answer being "because you didn't pay to go see it".

Whenever I watch Memento I can't help but think about how much you love her performance in it.

Whenever I watch Memento I can't help but think about how much you love her performance in it. She's legitimately one of my favorite character actresses. I think her performance on Frasier is one of the greatest comedic performances in TV history and her guest stint on The X-Files is top-tier horror stuff in any medium. I love that PTA has grokked onto her lately.

Yep, and she was awesome.

No one had to tell me to watch this movie even once, but anyways, sounds like Cooper could be in double nomination contention.

No one had to tell me to watch this movie even once, but anyways, sounds like Cooper could be in double nomination contention. By all accounts, the supporting performances in this are really good but also appear to be much briefer than one would expect, and that limited screentime may work against them. It's kind of a naff year for Supporting Actor and Cooper is an A-lister, so maybe he can overcome it, but when you're getting compared to William Hurt in A History of Violence, he's kind of the exception that proves the rule.

Sounds like Harriet Sansom Harris is Licorice Pizza's Alfred Molina.

Well the Erlich tweet says 20 minute sequence so he may have a little more than Hurt. Even so the category is thin enough, and the academy likes Cooper enough that it doesn't seem too crazy at this venture anyways.

Certain people on our forum are going to love that. Haven't felt like that after seeing a new release since Phantom Thread. Don't know if the "whole lot of movie" comment is just referring to the content or if that means it is going to be long.
