Nate Mann is in this in a leading role.......or something like that...........allegedly. thefilmstage.com/paul-thomas-andersons-soggy-bottom-adds-nate-mann-in-a-leading-role/Considering the secrecy around his projects, it’s not entirely surprising that the casting of a major role in a Paul Thomas Anderson film is only revealed months after shooting has ended. Led by Philip Seymour Hoffman’s son, Cooper Hoffman, as well as Bradley Cooper, Alana Haim, and Obi-Wan Kenobi star Benny Safdie, filming wrapped back in November for the 1970s-set film with the working title of Soggy Bottom. Now, another name has been added to the cast.
Buried in the bottom of a Deadline article about casting for the Band of Brothers sequel Masters of the Air, they note that newcomer Nate Mann was cast as “one of the lead roles” in PTA’s next film. Following the story of a high school student and successful child actor (Hoffman), as well an old-school producer/director (Cooper) and a politician running for office (Safdie), one imagines Mann may figure in as a friend of Hoffman’s character, but we’ll hopefully find out before the end of the year. Considering it’s an ensemble film, we’ll be curious to see how many more “lead roles” have yet to be unveiled as well.

On a tangential note, I am very excited to see Masters of the Air. One of the enduring things about Band of Brothers and The Pacific was how many notable greats of their generation first made their appearances there, and Masters of the Air being a full twenty years after Band of Brothers means we'll have a new crop of promising young talent.

Something interesting here... Jordan Ruimy said recently, "There is no stage shooting planned for the film, as everything has already been shot on location." Could this be true? I feel like we would've had more pap shots and casting info if that were the case... I assumed they'd shoot mostly in studio for more of a covid controlled environment. I don't think there were any shots of Benny Safdie on set, only campaign posters of him? Btw that's an Oscary potential role.... if not him, Cooper who could be double-nodded this year...and he's a few weeks out from shooting his Bernstein movie. The man actually might be a 7x acting nominee in two years time??

I don't think he's going to get a nomination for Nightmare Alley, next awards season the Lead Actor category is going to be incredibly packed. And in this one PSH's son is the leading guy and Benjamin Safdie has probably the better role as the closeted politician.

The Academy loves him, it's a very baity role, and the film itself will be a big contender.

So basically, the Phantom Thread approach? I like it. Still hope it features at a festival along the way, though.

I think it's going to be another Inherent Vice. No confidence on this one.

I was imagining this being really low key but if the studio wants to just drop it on Christmas they much be confident in its awards and/or commercial chances.

Best wide-release movie Christmas present (and late birthday present for me) since Wolf of Wall Street. Since Inherent Vice was mentioned, I checked out its Imdb page and was a little surprised to see how low its rating is (6.7). It's my least favorite PTA film (though I don't dislike it), but I guess I would have expected it to at least be in the low 7s like The Master or Punch-Drunk Love...

I'm not betting against PTA and Cooper at this point. The movie would have to be a huge miss.

PTA hasn't made a bad film in his career (the horrible Mark Wahlberg aside), but high school and Bradley Cooper just don't invite a lot of confidence.

It's all opinions at the end of the day, but I thought Inherent Vice was terrible, and if PTA's name wasn't on it, some people would not even attempt to give it a pass. I like a lot of his stuff, but can't force myself to consider that film "good".

The only movie of his that I don't like is Boogie Nights as I just can't stand Wahlberg, but other aspects of that film are still strong.

I think Boogie Nights is one of his best films and certainly his most accessible. I don't love Walhberg either in many things, but thought he was perfectly cast in this and it may be his career best performance. Like I said, it's all opinions, so a certain amount of subjectivity is at play.

For everyone who assumes that every potential awardd player that goes to Cannes means that it will be a surefire contender, Ammonite too was slated last year to be a Cannes premiere, and we all know how it went.

All you do is just gripe needlessly about people's hopes and expectations while relentlessly putting down films and performers you don't like. We get it. You don't think this is going to be an awards player.

And Paul has never brought a movie to a major festival that didn't at least get a major award: Golden Bear for Magnolia; Cannes Best Director for Punch-Drunk Love; Berlin Best Director for There Will Be Blood; Venice Best Director and Volpi Cups for The Master.

No Cannes, no Venice, no TIFF, no NYFF gala...for a filmmaker with such limited commercial success and a film that wrapped in November 2020, that seems suspect. Are they taking this to Berlin or something and releasing it next March or something? Or will this be a Telluride film + NYFF main slate or something like that?
