Most divisive movie ever (?) pre-release .........what do you think morton - 65% RT maybe? ...... Mick LaSalle @micklasalleI'm trying to think the last time a director had as good a year as the one Ridley Scott is having, with two exceptional movies -- Last Duel and House of Gucci. You might have to go back to Coppola in 1974. And Scott is having them both released in one SEASON.I hope. It feels like it could be in red territory sometimes, but it also seems to have a lot of people that really like/love it. I wonder if the hate camp just doesn't like the story itself or if the movie is a mess? I mean, this is a movie about a cold-blooded drunk with power woman who killed her husband out of spite, basically.

Just a decade before the murder of Gucci you could get a milder sentence if you killed a cheating wife / husband, the so called honor killing. Let's admit the murder happened 10 years after their separation, but maybe her attitude was still stuck to the previous mindset.

Ticket wise, this is doing well at the Alamo Drafthouse DTLA.

I don't care if this wins 11 Razzies, tanks at the box-office, gets as close to an Oscar only if somebody knows a guy named "Oscar" and gets a million 1 star reviews...... ..this is like Scarface to me with everybody playing Tony Montana.......I love her in this scene too........and this isn't camp either. This is the "we have to make our own mark and enforce it" scene ......should have left the F word in Glad to see someone else made the Scarface connection bc I’m seeing the exact same thing. This film’s gonna be incredible

Lotta cast interviews already and a lot more coming but not much Camille Cottin so far - she is so radiant and elegant here, speaking wonderful English (she spent years in London growing up) and even sounds a little American at times. Pretty much she should be getting offered every role imaginable right now.

Embargo lifts tonight - 6PM East Coast Time - so who's ultimately right here? - Mick LaSalle - a man of exquisite good taste (sometimes anyway, um) or the 4 Whoresman of the Crapocalypse - World of Reel's Jordan Ruimy, Matt Neglia (the worst of the 4!), our very own alumni (Bad)Will Mavity, and Awards Watch (awww) Grand Wizard Erik Anderson? I'm saying it gets in the low 60s or better on RT - fnck it I'm dying on that hill - but hey what do I know anyway I mean I'm not the esteemed Erik Anderson or Will Mavity .......and besides I've been seduced by many wrong, and murderous females when I clearly should have known better.... Mick LaSalle @micklasalle I predict the reviews will be mixed because, amazingly, there will be critics who realize it’s funny but mistakenly think it’s not supposed to be. So they will be confused. Reviews should be out everywhere tomorrow at 3 pm. Just assume anyone who doesn’t like it is wrong.
@micklasalle· 14h HOUSE OF GUCCI is one of the small handful of movies I've seen that are made up entirely of good scenes. Not just functional scenes. Good scenes.

I wonder if this is going to be one of those times where the critics and the audiences do not see eye to eye.

61 on Metacritic so far. Same as Vice
Reviews are all over the place though. Gleiberman says it's Scott's best film since Gladiator.

I'm telling all y'all - the movie is not camp it is a black comedy - people are wildly misusing the word "camp" and I love campy stuff.
Also "All The Money In The World" had an 80% on RT - and that is in no way as fun or an enjoyable as this was and didn't have a performance like Gaga's in it either.........going for my 2nd viewing tomorrow, ftw!!!

Currently 65 on RT and 59 on MC.
I’m not thinking this gets much in the way of major nominations besides Gaga fighting for the 5th spot.

I don't think this is comparable to "Vice". That film was about political figures, "important and timely" subject matter, had more prestige factor, was McKay's follow-up to "The Big Short", and they hold off the embargo for so long that it already started to get nominated for things before we got to see the actual reviews. That's how the mixed reception didn't hurt it. And it's also not gonna be "Bohemian Rhapsody" as we don't expect this to make a billion.
That said, considering how barren the supporting category is and how much Academy likes ham, Leto can still get in unless there's backlash.

If this movie makes a lot of money and the audience likes it then I don't think it matters what the critics think. They didn't like Green Book and it won.

That just shows that something is possible. Not likely. Bohemian Rhapsody's numbers were worse than that. This movie isn’t making 900 million. Point still stands. Specific examples just prove possibility not likelihood. Those examples are exceptions.

One of the great things about it is digging into the reviews themselves - I mean these are not just divisive reviews these are polar opposite reviews - and you have significant critics who have raved this too........Gleiberman, La Salle and not raves but passes from those you think would hate it and never give it a pass - Collin, Zacharek, Peter Bradshaw, etc. I literally think there will be people on MAR who question everything I say after seeing my (positive) review which I think is the only review so far .........I mean it played extremely well to the audience I watched it with - it may depend on how or when you see it actually - I saw it with a rowdy crowd who just ate it up and - I think it's tracking for a 20 million opening or so last I heard. If you watch it at home - it may play entirely differently, personally I say see it at night with a packed house ...... Like I said in my review - one of the strangest films I've seen in recent years for a lot of reasons........it is nothing like the films it's being linked to in terms of how it is done (Vice, Bombshell) even if it replicates their numbers on the surface......Leto alone arguably ruins 2 of his scenes with Pacino in how they end (not to me, I laughed, but..........)

Love this clip! A person born into wealth would never stir their coffee/tea and then lick the spoon... New money is kinda loud.

Reviews are better than Tammy Faye yet people think Chastain is a lock in what might be the movie's only nom.
House of Gucci has a better release and Gaga/Leto will be everywhere. The reviews won't take it out of the running in any acting categories.
