We have a new Don. I can't remember the other films off the top of my head, but I think these are the 10? The Godfather Part II, Taxi Driver, The Deer Hunter, Raging Bull, Awakenings, Goodfellas, Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle, Joker, The Irishman That's pretty good that he did it with all top 5 films since it's easier now for actors to rack up being in more Best Picture nominees unless they go back to just being 5, which I don't see happening in the near future.

His other Best Picture nominee is The Mission. Yeah, it's fitting that someone with all top 5 nominees matched Nicholson, who has himself had all top 5 nominees. De Niro is likely to surpass Nicholson with Killers of the Flower Moon, if all goes well.

Bittersweet moment for De Niro Hopefully killers brings him some individual awards love I think he'd be pretty happy overall. Getting The Irishman made was the cake, the great reception it received was the whipped cream, and his Oscar nomination for Best Picture is the cherry on top. It's been obvious for a while that he wasn't getting nominated, but it's still been an amazing year for him. At 76 years of age!

Bumping this thread to get the wheels turning on updating it for 2020, but if News of the World gets nominated for Best Picture, Tom Hanks ties Nicholson at 10 and is one behind De Niro (correct?).

Assuming that there are no shock nominees this year in Best Picture, here are the actors who stand a strong chance of finally entering the club. I also listed those who will likely have three under their belts so that we can keep an eye on them. (NOTE: The six- and five-timers should already be here.)
6: Ray McKinnon (Driving Miss Daisy, Bugsy, Apollo 13, The Blind Side, Ford v. Ferrari, News of the World)
5: Jesse Plemons (Bridge of Spies, The Post, Vice, The Irishman, Judas and the Black Messiah) David Strathairn (L.A. Confidential, Good Night, and Good Luck, Lincoln, Darkest Hour, Nomadland) Jeremy Strong (Lincoln, Zero Dark Thirty, Selma, The Big Short, Trial of the Chicago 7)
4: Beau Bridges (Norma Rae, Jerry Maguire, The Descendants, One Night in Miami) Frances McDormand (Mississippi Burning, Fargo, Three Billboards..., Nomadland) Viola Davis (The Help, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, Fences, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom) Alfred Molina (Raiders of the Lost Ark, An Education, Vice, Promising Young Woman)
3: Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther, Da 5 Bloods, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom) Colman Domingo (Lincoln, Selma, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom) Jamie Foxx (Ray, Django Unchained, Soul) Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Inception, Lincoln, Trial of the Chicago 7) Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out, Black Panther, Judas and the Black Messiah) Michael Keaton (Birdman, Spotlight, Trial of the Chicago 7) Frank Langella (Good Night, and Good Luck, Frost/Nixon, Trial of the Chicago 7) Elizabeth Marvel (True Grit, Lincoln, News of the World) Gary Oldman (JFK, Darkest Hour, Mank) Eddie Redmayne (Les Miserables, The Theory of Everything, Trial of the Chicago 7) Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies, Dunkirk, Trial of the Chicago 7) Lakeith Stanfield (Selma, Get Out, Judas and the Black Messiah) Isiah Whitlock, Jr. (Goodfellas, BlacKkKlansman, Da 5 Bloods)
As for actors likely to bump up their tally: Tom Hanks, Anthony Hopkins, and Bill Camp.

Hanks would tie Nicholson and De Niro at 10. While De Niro has actually appeared in 11 Best Picture nominees, he went uncredited for American Hustle, so I'm not counting that one for him. Unfortunate, but the thread title does specify that we're only counting credited appearances.

So we're looking at Hanks potentially tying for the top spot. Interestingly, he'd do it with nine leading performances and one supporting, which would beat out both De Niro and Nicholson in that respect. Not too shabby.

Interestingly, he'd do it with nine leading performances and one supporting, which would beat out both De Niro and Nicholson in that respect. Not too shabby. If News of the World gets nominated, there are multiple ways we could break the tie, so to speak: 1. The Lead-Supporting breakdown you mentioned (though, personally, I think a traditional supporting role is more integral to a movie than a voice acting lead role). This would make it Hanks > De Niro = Nicholson. 2. Billing. This would make it Hanks > De Niro > Nicholson. 3. Uncredited appearances. This would make it De Niro > Hanks = Nicholson. 4. Best Picture nominee strength. All of Nicholson's Best Picture nominees came before the Best Picture expansion. While De Niro's haven't, I think most people would agree that all of his Best Picture nominees were in the top 5. 6 of Hanks's 10 Best Picture nominees will have come after the expansion, and probably none of the 6 were in the top 5. This will make it Nicholson >= De Niro > Hanks. 5. Best Picture winners. Nicholson was in 3 Best Picture winners (lead in 1, supporting in 2), De Niro was in 2 (lead in 1, supporting in 1), and Hanks will have been in 1 (lead). This will make it Nicholson > De Niro > Hanks. For me, Nicholson's and De Niro's appearances are more convincing in multiple ways (always top 5, and all were physical appearances), so I'd say their numbers are more impressive even if Hanks tied them.

Bobby D and Jack remain unchallenged for another year.
Good God, here's our new updates:

4: Frances McDormand (Mississippi Burning, Fargo, Three Billboards..., Nomadland) Alfred Molina (Raiders of the Lost Ark, An Education, Vice, Promising Young Woman)
3: Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Inception, Lincoln, Trial of the Chicago 7) Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out, Black Panther, Judas and the Black Messiah) Michael Keaton (Birdman, Spotlight, Trial of the Chicago 7) Frank Langella (Good Night, and Good Luck, Frost/Nixon, Trial of the Chicago 7) Gary Oldman (JFK, Darkest Hour, Mank) Eddie Redmayne (Les Miserables, The Theory of Everything, Trial of the Chicago 7) Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies, Dunkirk, Trial of the Chicago 7) Lakeith Stanfield (Selma, Get Out, Judas and the Black Messiah)
Anthony Hopkins also jumps up to 6, as does Martin Sheen.
