Y'all... This is reminding me of when Ryan O'Neal slept with Melanie Griffith. Tatum never forgave him for balling her best friend.

that feeling you get when your best friend becomes your mom definitely a downbeat episode. Not enough Matt Smith (could they not have shown him stealing the egg?) with most of the court intrigue involving which teenage girl Viserys has to begrudgingly marry. Alcock continues to be a highlight and the anticlimactic showdown at Dragonstone only works because she carries it. Also loved her scene with Rhaenys (who we need to see a lot more of btw) which was the best talky scene in an ep full of them.

opening credits were disappointing. Surely they could've come up with something better than animated blood cascading down animated hallways.

Am I ... the only one who's not completely in on Matt Smith at this point? I mean, he's an arresting presence, but it feels like he's acting in a different show from everyone else. As in, he feels like he's giving a Game of Thrones performance, while all the other major players are sort of doing something more downbeat and different and compelling. So far I've been far more taken with Paddy Considine (MVP of the first two eps), Milly Alcock, Rhys Ifans, Steve Toussaint, and Eve Best than I have been with Smith.

They're matching each other beat for beat and drawing the lines between their characters & personalities that will lead to greater rifts. Considine is delivering the grief and betrayal while Smith meets him with startling frankness and swagger but also with wounds of his own. I hope Smith gets more opportunities to delve into that complexity so he's more than just a cocksure likable antihero but I have high hopes based on the first episode. spoiler clip for premier:

A few days late, but Episode 2 was a very strong follow-up. Milly Alcock is absolutely crushing it and it is a real shame we're not going to have her around for too much longer due to the upcoming time jump, but Emma D'Arcy has her work cut out for her to replace her.
Eve Best was the MVP of the episode for me, and I'm glad we're getting more of Steve Toussaint's machinations, as the Sea Snake is one of my favourite historical characters and there's so much they can do with him. Rhys Ifans is also extremely underrated and giving Littlefinger vibes better than Littlefinger himself ever did. (Also, yes, Paddy Considine rules and breaks my fucking heart every time.)
Not terribly crazy about Sonoya Mizuno, unfortunately. Feels like they're trying to go Shae 2.0 with her, right down to the dodgy put-on accent, and it's a shame because Mizuno is a capable actress.

Here for the crab guy. Such a haunting image. Crabfeeder fucking rules. The end image felt very Reggie Ledoux in Episode 3 of True Detective.

Pugs existing in Westeros is where I draw the line. I will not stand for having those ugly dogs in my medieval fantasy series.

First 45 minutes of episode 3 were the best of the show so far - loved how each of our main Targaryen players got a moment of madness that demonstrated how they are much more alike than we might have thought at first. Considine in particular shone in this hour, bringing raw intensity with every line. The last 15 minutes, however, were a complete mess, from the chaotic and unclear way it was filmed to its utterly underwhelming outcome. I'm a bit nonplussed as to why they gave so much set up to the crabfeeder, including giving him a really cool look, if they were just going to dispose of him offscreen after just a couple of episodes? I'm still feeling positive about the show overall, but I'm hoping next week will wash the sour taste out of my mouth.

Rhaenyra and Viserys sulking and moping for 45 minutes was simply unwatchable television. Whole episode stunk tbh.

This whole episode should've been three episodes. I feel like we needed more time to really build up the Crabfeeder and show his impact and make him more of a threat, and to show Alicent and Rhaenyra's growing estrangement more readily, as it did seem extremely sudden. (Yes, I know we will be bounding by months and years in this series but still, I hate that it's moving so fast because I really love these actors and their dynamic and I want to stay in this era a little while longer).
MVP of the episode was Considine in his verbal throwdown with Jason Lannister.

yeeeeah it's starting to slip. Alcock and Considine continue to be the highlights with Smith taking way more of a backseat than I was expecting. Final 15 minutes were sporadically cool but mostly messy and anti-climactic. Best moment in the ep was Alcock returning to camp (also Considine reluctantly killing the stag).
So... is Daemon just supporting? The show is simultaneously going too fast and not doing enough. We've barely seen "The Queen Who Never Was" (marketed as a significant supporting character), Daemon keeps taking the backseat, The Crabfeeder was shown and resolved in a space of like 20 minutes over two eps. They need to get back on track here.

Glad I'm not the only one who found that crabfeeder battle set-piece pretty incoherent. I watched it twice because I felt like I must've been missing a lot, but ... not really.
This show has definitely been at its best when it's just these cool British character actors doing shady backroom politics and verbally sparring over small council meetings (also what GOT was best at!). Let's get back to that.

I can't be the only one who got season 7 PTSD from the last ep. And it wasn't just the battle scene.

I can't be the only one who got season 7 PTSD from the last ep. And it wasn't just the battle scene. I don't have anywhere near the emotional involvement in this thing that I had in GoT so S7's missteps hurt a lot more than any flaws HotD can throw at me. But it wasn't great, yeah. I was worried from the marketing that there'd be too much "epic CGI action" and so far that's been true. How do you resolve an entire war in 15 minutes of 1 episode? Throw VFX at it. 🤷

Yeah, I just don't have the same attachment I did with GOT S1... none of the characters particularly interest me which is a big turn off.
It's not bad, it's just not engaging.

Outstanding episode. Can't tell if I like it better than the premier but definitely better than #2 and #3. This show is best when Rhaenyra, Viserys and Daemon are all in the same place because you know something awful is gonna happen.
