That last season of GOT has just completely annihilated any interest I have in this show, even if its from different writers.

I think at the beggining will not have the GOT hype, but still will be a success.- Our body needs an epic story showing vaginas and tits right.- Best of all, should be a short series between 3/5 seasons.- After all is just a couple of years of Westero's "History".-

yeah I desperately want this to be good but my first reaction to that trailer is that it just looks insanely expensive and glossy. The bigger the battles and the bigger the VFX, the more amplified its flaws are gonna be. Matt Smith looks cool and he's perfect casting for high fantasy but I'm still not connecting with the story and the dialogue is sounding really on the nose. If they don't have storytelling to back up the massive budget, it's going to feel like a failure.

To be fair, the story of the Dance of the Dragons is fairly well complete and outlined, so we know where it begins and ends, which is a massive advantage this series has that the mothership show did not. The thing is, I think it's a show that can only really sustain itself for three or four seasons, max.

I seriously can't go anywhere without seeing banner ads or commercials about this.
Hell, my Roku even has House of Dragons on its own sidebar menu.

A strong start. A new conflict and a vision into the far future. Plus typical thrones stuff like violence and sex.
When the king mentioned "long night" and "a song of ice and fire" references, i got chills and then i remembered how it all played out in GoT's ending and that left a bad after taste. Hope they don't lean too much into the future and focus on the present happenings and give us a good show.

*sigh* ... I must reluctantly admit that was a great first episode and I am excited to watch more.

Uh, this was possibly the best piece of GoT related media released since Hardhome. Fuck it, I'm ready to get hurt again.

Wow. Apart from the BLATANT Alicent/Rhaenyra queerbaiting (the longing looks, the flirty comments, the hand-clasp, come on just let it happen) I'm all in. I don't know if I'll ever have the kind of connection I had with OG Hound or OG Tyrion (etc, etc) or if anyone will be as fun to hate as Cersei or Tywin, but this was a phenomenal opener and it feels fucking great to be in Westeros again. When the GoT theme kicked in at the end credits I screamed and came.
Matt Smith making "cunt" a cool insult again after late-stage GoT abused it like one of Joffrey's whores. Smith and Considine better be in consideration for Emmys and loving D'Arcy too. Can't wait to see more from them and can't wait to see the opening credits next week. GoT is back baby.

I think it's not without flaw, as I feel like this episode felt a bit too rushed and could very well have been two or even three episodes -- I feel like we could've done a bit more with establishing characters before the major events spin everything out of control. We as an audience should have felt more of an impact with Aemma's death, and been given more time with Viserys/Aemma/Rhaenyra as a family so that we could feel that loss more viscerally.
But honestly, the rest of it was pretty immaculate. The direction and visuals were aces, probably among the very best in Martin's universe, and if this is the template we're going with in the future, we're in very good hands. I also like that it feels distinct enough that it might act as a soft reboot; it's clear that this is the world of Game of Thrones, but maybe one that doesn't feel like it needs to hold fast to the original series's lore and ultimate destination.

As for performances, standouts of the episode were Milly Alcock, Paddy Considine, and (particularly) Eve Best, who I think evinced a great deal of sour poise in her performance as the Queen Who Never Was. Matt Smith's performance has promise but I just feel like we don't know too much about Daemon's inner workings yet to allow for him to really go for it, but the presence is there. Steve Toussaint and Rhys Ifans are very magnetic and I have high hopes for the both of them as the series goes on. Also love that Graham McTavish fits like a glove in this world.

Her voiceover work was that good eh? woah didn't even realize they were double-casting those parts because it wasn't in any of the marketing or featurettes that I recall but the similarities between the actresses are uncanny. I could've sworn Emily Carey looked exactly like Olivia Cooke in some of those shots. I'm actually kind of bummed because Milly Alcock killed it and I was hoping to get a whole season with her.

I don't disagree, buuuut I'd say this episode was an example of using exposition really effectively and using the brutality of that childbirth scene (I was clenching every muscle in my body) and the performances to carry the gravity of that moment and the resulting schism the rest of the way. I think Viserys and Aemma's scene when she's in the bath pretty seamlessly conveyed so much useful information about their relationship and the push/pull between his love for her and desire for a male heir. And the acting from Alcock (love that shot of her face when she hears about what Daemon said at the whorehouse -- you know he fucked up!) and the explosive confrontation between Smith and Considine in the Great Hall really did a great job drawing the battle lines, so to speak. "Heir for a day" was TOO SOON Daemon For me the main blindspot was Aemma & Rhaenyra who only got that one brief moment together towards the beginning. Alcock goes a long way towards compensating for that with her acting and you can tell how much Rhaenyra loved her mother but it definitely could've used more dedicated screentime. but goddamn what a great premier. And honestly I'm glad they erred on the side of having more action and getting to the schism quickly. It's such a great way to open a show and establish the conflict. As untouchable as GoT S1 is, I gotta say I think this had the better opener.

Oh, I think that in terms of actually needing to compress all of this into a single episode, they did it about as well as anyone could, and economy of storytelling worked very well here. I guess I just wanted more of Paddy Considine being happy because he breaks my heart when he's sad.
