sooooo... initial thought is that Close does look like a contender for this, buuuuut... it also looks like a kind of performance in a kind of film that would've performed better in the 90s or early 2000s. Feels really mawkish and baity. Will it have enough support from a newer generation of voters? Not sure. Depends on the competition of course, and I honestly haven't kept up because who even knows what's getting released anymore. Timing is everything, and Netflix is probably very smart to release it as late in the season as they are, to prevent the deluge of thinkpieces about the harm that the book has done in regards to Appalachia as a whole (most people who have read it from the area hate it, while "outsiders" think it's charming). Voters probably will feel very much the same way, and it helps to have the most inoffensive director in history filming it and largely sidestepping the more inflammatory issues that the book has built up (largely due to its right-leaning author, instead focusing on the mother/grandmother storyline). I do get the sense that even if Close wins for this, if Sunset Boulevard gets made, fans will get pissed that the Academy couldn't wait a little while longer, because that overdue factor won't matter at all in that campaign.

Okay, I only watched a min of the trailer cause I can't with Netflix trailers. Glenn is winning the Oscar, y'all. Amy will get in due to lack of competition but I don't see a win from this, well at least based on the trailer.

Hell, Netflix could field five contenders from their stable alone and still have several left over.

I'm not sure how Close can lose for this. Not sure I've seen a performance in awhile that screamed " give me the damned Oscar" this much just in the trailer alone. She also gives an incredible perf, and that usually helps.

This is not my kind of film (at all), but I do think the actresses look strong.

What issues will the film be sidestepping? (not familiar with the book at all)

What issues will the film be sidestepping? (not familiar with the book at all) J.D. Vance is a hard-line Republican whose basic thesis of the book is that if you pull yourself up by the bootstraps, you can escape from anywhere, and the tacit underlying message is that people who stay in poverty largely choose to do so.

Actually, this is the kind of role that has been popular with the Supporting Actress winners in the last few years. And like Viola Davis, Allison Janney, Regina King, Laura Dern - Glenn Close is a veteran actress who has never won.

I'm wondering why James Cameron didn't make a third Terminator featuring a cyborg who was just completely fucking apathetic about John Connor. "Come with me if you want to live. Or not. I don't give a shit."

That Terminator line was one of the worst things I’ve ever heard in a film trailer. I was kinda interested in this but that trailer actually greatly lowered my expectations.

At this point, I'm praying that Close has a death scene like Oprah's in Lee Daniels's The Butler Directed by Lee Daniels. Just an off-screen thud.

I mean they will occasionally go "nah" (e.g. Oprah for The Butler, Melissa Leo Novitiate). Oprah does not have Glenn Close's industry respect as an actor, or even close to it. Despite her Oscar nod for The Color Purple, Oprah is seen as a personality, entrepreneur and talkshow host first, and actress maybe fourth or fifth. Oprah going HAM on in an attempted Oscarbaiting role does not carry the same weight as overdue 7 time Oscar loser and 3 time Tony winner Glenn Close doing it. With Oprah, it's stunt they can ignore, because she is barely percieved as an actress at all. Pretty much nobody saw Novitiate. It made 580k worldwide, which isnt even the catering budget on some mid-sized productions. You can't gain any traction if no voters are watching your film, no matter how baity the performance. For good or ill, Hillbilly Elegy will be seen by voters and the industry at large because.... Netflix. So yeah, I don't see how Close can lose for this. A massively respected overdue actress in A-C-T-I-N-G role that will be widely seen. Reviews would have to be terrible for the film, and even then I suspect Close could still win.

You're right I definitely forgot one, Glenn Close for The Wife. The Wife didn't look anywhere near as " give me the damned Oscar" as this Hillbilly thing. For a start, Close looked and sounded normal in that. Hillbilly is a complete deglam/transformation. Weird hair, odd posture, yokel accent. She looks heavier as well, so either she gained weight or wore some sort of padding or fatsuit. This Hillbilly shit is next level Oscarbaiting from Close. Oh, and judging from the hospital scene in the trailer, Close's character probably has some sort of terminal disease. Might as well mail her the fucking Oscar now. Glenn wasn't leaving this one to chance
