Shadowbringers is finally in the books. All my combat classes are at Level 85 and now I'm set to begin Endwalker. Martin Stett , I would still have Heavensward as my favourite expansion. Shadowbringers was great but it also felt like a diversion from the primary story -- an excellent diversion, but it really was an overlong side quest more than anything else. EXACTLY. It feels sooooo disconnected from the stuff I cared about. And I hated Emet-Selch. Whiny little bitch-ass wants me to feel sorry for him as he plans global omnicide. Fuck that loser. Omega was pretty much the same character, but far better because it didn't care if you sympathized with it. Have you done Werlyt yet?

I actually really liked Emet-Selch -- he reminded me of Jinkx Monsoon for some reason (I was playing without audio when he was introduced and I was rewatching Jinkx's seasons of RuPaul's Drag Race in the background so I will forever envision Emet-Selch with Jinkx's voice and mannerisms). I haven't done Werlyt yet. Right now I'm just catching up on my Level 80+ class quests.

I haven't done Werlyt yet. Right now I'm just catching up on my Level 80+ class quests. I'm being a little too harsh on Emet. A big reason I dislike him is because *somebody* has to. I'm tired of hearing his name as "greatest villain ever" when he is far from the best villain in this game. He is quite entertaining as a diva attention whore... I just don't think he is intriguing as a moral counterpoint. The Tsuyu dilemma was interesting as a question of morality and statecraft: if the "Butcher" of Doma is (obviously) mentally unfit to stand trial for her crimes, what actions should the king take? Fordola, Lolorito, Y'sayle, Hraesvelgr, Merlwyb, the Elementals... there are so many wonderful, morally complex characters and positions in this game, but Shadowbringers focuses on a fairly straightforward story of Emet-Selch. And if it wasn't FFXIV, I'd like it quite a bit. ShB stops the narrative I was invested in dead in its tracks for what is essentially a sidequest that features few of the characters I was in love with (the Scions are here and they get some of their best character moments in ShB - Urianger and the Fae is some of the funniest shit any fantasy story has ever created - but none of the nation leaders even have a role to play). It is quite good on its own merits, I just wish it wasn't placed between Stormblood and Endwalker. Or rather, I wish that any of the side stories of SB and ShB were the main scenario - Bozja (which I still haven't done ), Dalmasca, Werlyt - the nations on the frontline in the battle against tyranny: those are the stories I would personally have wished for. Edit: If you're leveling multiple jobs, I highly recommend you do the ShB role quests as well. The healer/tank/physical DPS/ranged DPS quests in the Crystarium unlock another questline when they have all been completed. None of it is necessary, but they offer some good story. EW followed the same formula for the role quests.

He's probably my favourite villain thus far in the game but I wouldn't call him the greatest in FF, especially as he shows up fairly late in the proceedings. Zenos was definitely the most despicable villain (or rather, Elidibus-as-Zenos) but I enjoyed Emet-Selch more. I do agree that he is much more straightforward than those other, more complex characters . . . but sometimes I don't need complexity. I already did all the ShB role quests, and they were excellent.

I'm playing some Dark Souls III, but I also have something that isn't technically a video game that I've been really enjoying. I am referring to Gloomhaven, a massive, $100 board game that my dad wanted to play. (To be totally fair, those $100 dollars house a lot of components and content.) So he bought it. And since I told him about it, I got roped in for at least one day a week. It is essentially a dungeon crawler video game, but you have to do everything manually. You fight monsters, pick up loot, buy items, try to advance a main story or go on sidequests, etc. The key to Gloomhaven is that the battles are full of real strategy and tough decisions. Do I move quickly and attack an enemy for big damage, but screw up my partner's turn by standing in their way? Does my partner think he's being clever by healing himself instead of attacking the enemy next to me the one time I needed him to attack for my move to work oh no I'm gonna die? The battle system is easy to learn, but offers a lot of complexity, and each character has *very* different styles. (My dad had to switch off of Mindthief because we couldn't get past the first level after four tries - he switched to Tinker and we took levels 1 and 2 with ease on our first try.) The basic idea that you play two cards from your hand - an attack and a movement - gets more constrictive as the game goes on and you're forced to lose cards, facing a dwindling deck of dwindling options as your health sinks lower and lower. You can come out of the gate hitting hard against some basic guards or skeletons, but if you use up your best cards before you reach the boss, you may have screwed yourself. You can get hit with a nearly lethal blow and decide to sacrifice a card to negate the damage, but that means one less option to play later on. Now, the game obviously is very heavily RNG based with its enemies, but I enjoy that factor. Sometimes sitting still and praying that the enemy won't move this turn is what you'll wind up doing, and holding your breath each time a card flips is actually fun, for me. Is it a bit wonky that those skeletons could kill me right now but instead stood two hexes away and watched me take a breather? Sure. But I counted their cards and calculated that I had a 33% of that happening, and seeing my gamble pay off is cool! There's a push-pull between power and versatility that keeps every encounter fresh. By every encounter, I mean the first two levels. But it is a surprisingly addictive, enjoyable game that promises a long campaign of dungeon crawling and multiplayer fun. I recommend trying it out either through something like Board Game Simulator (I would assume it is on there) or through the official video game itself, which is literally just the board game but the computer calculates damage and status effects and such for you. (Apparently, the PC version costs $35 on Steam.)

Maxed out all my primary combat classes in Final Fantasy XIV to Level 90, and I haven't even begun Endwalker proper. I'm taking a break to knock out God of War: Ragnarok, then it'll be October and I'll want to see if I can get Resident Evil 4 Remake under my belt.

I've been attending Lunarcon in FFXIV the past couple of days. Been loads of fun waiting in lines. (For real, it has been!) Literally took four hours to meet the Synodic Scribe (I was end of the line). I still haven't spoken with him - the whole end of the line just got waved in since we were being so nice - and I've been sitting here for *another* hour while everyone just chats lore and story decisions with him. I have to work tomorrow, so I think I'll have to speak up soon or fall asleep at my computer.

I haven't been playing much Dark Souls III because I've been working so much, but I'm around 33 hours in I think. I... don't like it. This isn't Bloodborne, that was well designed but felt like a bit of a chore on my first run. This is poorly designed and feels like a chore.
The gameplay exists somewhere between the deliberate, careful thinking of DS1 and the bloody mad rampaging of BB. The combat is slow, but the game design is "spawn more enemies into a room, more, more, MORE!!!" In BB, this could work because of the fast paced combat. Here, it just drags. I can do it without any serious problems, but it isn't fun. In DS1, you could make a plan of attack, read a room before going in, look for openings. In BB, you could dodge and run and instinctively lash out when you have openings. In DS3, there is no planning - you enter a room and then enemies appear - there is no thinking in battle because there are mobs, but there is also no speedy thrill because the openings are so telegraphed and so slooooow.
The hitboxes aren't as fucked as DS2 - I haven't found a single wonky hitbox yet - but at least that game was *trying* some new things, sorta. Failing at them because the base design was a complete disaster, yes. But the spells were interesting and the torch mechanics were cool.
Are the bosses cool? No, not really. The Farron guys are just Artorias cosplayers BUT NOW THERE IS MORE THAN ONE!!!1!!1!1!!!! Which is just annoying, not interesting. Nothing new there. I am seriously having trouble remembering any other bosses right now. There was the Crystal Sage, which was insanely dull if you have throwing knives and/or poison. The Deacons were as much of a pushover as the Congregation from DS2. There was some demon king or something in that lake, which I can't even remember beating even though it was probably a week ago?
The area design is aggressively linear and all of it is grey. The story - such as there is - seems to have easily missed triggers, as I am obviously missing a few merchants in my Shrine. (Bloodborne also suffered from this problem.) I'm finding it hard to gather any enthusiasm to explore. Exploring was my favorite part of DS1, and it's all gone here.
Whatever. It isn't terrible, it's just... dull. It feels like Miyazaki was going through the motions because he really didn't want to make another Souls game. It is functional.

Holy shit, running Labyrinth of the Ancients at MINE level is a revelatory experience. If you play FFXIV, you owe it to yourself to give it a go. I'm a few hours past my bedtime, but this was some of the most fun I've had playing this game.

I was the same way, but I am angling for that Goddess of War/Magic title where I can max out all of my combat classes, and I decided to give BLU a try again (even though it doesn't really matter when it comes to getting that title; my OCD just couldn't bear having a whole column of 90s and then BLU 15). And lo and behold, it's the most fun class to play, especially when you can solo dungeons with it. Give it another shot.

They have a new limited class coming up in the next expansion, if I heard correctly, so it'll be interesting to see how that goes. I have so many things I'm doing in game that I may need to create a schedule of "things to do" like this is a job. Except fun. 1. I'm trying to create a "tour guide" experience in which I walk around an area and give little lore dumps on their backgrounds (adapted from Encylopedia Eorzea entries) because I'm a nerd. Why are the stairs outside Ul'dah called the "Eighty Sins of Sasamo?" There's a lore reason for that, and it's awesome! How did Skull Valley in La Noscea get its name? What are some of these locations you may or may not visit once and never actually look around to see the detail? That's the idea, but I'm in very rough planning stages for it right now. I am several months away from a working plan at best, and even then I doubt anyone will be interested. 2. I'm trying to participate in FC events some nights, and those can take a lot of time. Every Thursday we're doing MINE runs of Coil right now (Turn 5 is bitchslapping us), and I really want to continue the "hard mode" content with a group if I can. 3. I'm trying to recruit a CWLS for MINE Alliance Raids - in fact, that's what I was doing last night. It's a mark of how wildly different it was from boring old Labyrinth that *everyone* asked to join the linkshell when we were done. I'm hoping that enough word of mouth can spread so that it doesn't take three hours to get an alliance together in the future - it's a dream that I think is attainable if I plug at it. It's for other people as much as me - I'd love to see people putting up their own MINE runs with a viable community. 4. Running braindead content for fun is something I like doing too. 5. Parties can be cool too - I went to three Halloween parties and Lunarcon this year, and though they can be exhausting, it is also enjoyable to do silly things like Carbuncle Darts - an arcanist jumps off of a high tower and everyone else tries to jump to the same spot, with whoever is closest winning the round - or scavenger hunts or whatever other nonsense people come up with being an enjoyable experience for a night.

Oh, I meant to ask you -- what is your favourite "title" in the game, or which is the hardest you've grinded for? Mine is "Temptress of Fate" which I got for doing a thousand Fates. Maybe not as rare as most, but I worked my ass off for it.

If I was using this outfit, I'd probably be "Fashion Leader" or something.

(Just finished Crystal Tower MINE yesterday with Syrcus and WoD - WoD isn't too different, but Syrcus has some cool stuff you won't see normally. And Labyrinth is just pure chaos )

You hop to the outside ring to avoid a super attack and sprint around the outside killing adds that electrocute the floor and drain your health if you don't kill them fast enough. It's nothing too fancy, but it's a change of pace.

Right now Twintania is kicking my FC's ass for the past... two months? We're not making progress. Part of that is picking up people in PF who don't get it (we had one today - was trying hard, but just didn't have enough experience in the fight), part of that is just... us being bad. (Hilariously so today - there were some amazingly dumb moves that had us all losing our shit ) Us tanks are not communicating very well with our swaps, I think I'll have to talk with my co-tank about specific plans because we are winging it waaaaaay too much.
