Cinematographers' best cinematography - still open
1. Roger Deakins- The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford 2. Emmanuel Lubezki- The Tree of Life 3. Hoyte Van Hoytema - Interstellar 3. Wally Pfister - Inception 4. Robert Richardson- JFK/ Inglourious Basterds 5. Jeff Cronenweth - The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo 6. John Toll- The Thin Red Line 7. Conrad Hall- Road to Perdition 8. Greig Fraser- Foxcatcher It's a shame to see him stop working on cinematography since his directorial debut in 2014, let alone being replaced from being Nolan's long-time collaborator. Oscar nominated for four times, winning for Inception. What would be the best word to describe his style? Or in other words, the visual of Nolan's films pre-Interstellar.

Inception but almost went with The Dark Knight for these two shots alone:

The Dark Knight. His look fits Gotham in that film to a t.

The Dark Knight. So many memorable shots, including the opening and and final ones (and the ones mhynson mentioned, obviously). I also love the lighting of the sequence where Gordon and co. find out that the Joker card has the DNA of Loeb, the judge, and Dent... the disembodied head of the Joker in the darkness of the interrogation room... the overhead shot of Gotham at night and the burning firetruck below... Also this:

Inception by quite a distance.
His work in Insomnia and Prestige and also the Batman-Movies was very good as well.

I miss his work. Inception for sure, but shout-out to The Prestige, The Dark Knight and Batman Begins

The Dark Knight has so many iconic shots. Inception is a close #2. Too bad his classy style hasn't translated into good filmmaking in his directing career.

Went with The Prestige, which I'd say is the most visually pleasing of Nolan's collaborations with Pfister. The Dark Knight is a close second, and I also quite like his work on Batman Begins.
I've never understood the praise for his work on Inception and have always been puzzled by his Oscar win. Not that it's particularly bad work, but I just find it pretty standard, especially for a film of that nature. The VFX do most of the heavy-lifting on that one.

Inception, followed by The Prestige. I do quite like his stuff in all of the Batman Trilogy, especially the final entry and Memento always deserves shout-outs at most levels.

It's during rewatches that I realized how mesmerizing and at times surreal the cinematography in Inception is. There is a texture to the images that I can't quite explain. Here are some shots I can find on the internet.

went with TDK today but I could have just as easily voted for Inception, TDKR, or The Prestige. Pfister is nothing if not consistent. And I LOVE that Moneyball got a vote. Very underracted cinematography.
