Okay, this is actually definitely contemporary. Could still be Vineland but I don't know how.

Any chance this comes out this year? Phantom Thread started production in January of 2017. It’s possible!

Leo looks like a hobo there. Have no idea what this could be and why it costs so much.

Ugh, I have a bad feeling this is Vineland. Inherent Vice 2 baby!!! If it is Vineland, as is looking likely, let's hope it winds up better than his other Thomas Pynchon adaptation, Inherent Vice, which got a lot of reflexive praise from critics because it's PTA, but was not a good movie, imho.

Just on the surface, from a first look, it looks like his character is LDC's version of the Big Lebowski.

So if it’s Vineland either the reports of it being a contemporary film were false or the story will be updated

Maybe I'm out of touch with different parts of America, but the background behind Leo in that pic doesn't look super contemporary to me.

Looking forward to DiCap absolutely ruining this with his awful, awful performance when the story should revolve around Regina Hall anyway for representation and what not.....

Question for those who read Vineland: is this a more mainstream/palatable Pynchon novel? 'Cause otherwise the movie being described as PTA's most commercial doesn't quite compute. Ditto the rumors about the 100 mil budget. Who would give PTA so much money for another Pynchon adaptation after how much of a flop Inherent Vice was, even with DiCaprio headlining?
Of course there's a strong possibility that PTA has adapted Pynchon's material to be more palatable this time (unlike the dense IV) so maybe that's the answer. Like, hey, it's a zany star-studded comedy with Leo, not a labyrinthian gonzo bewilderment!

I really don't know why anyone would greenlight $100 million to do an adaptation of that novel, even with DiCaprio in it.

I wonder if it may be an original script with some elements of Vineland thrown in there. Kind of like how stories from Gary Goetzman's life were thrown in Licorice Pizza despite the movie not being his biopic (lol).

I wonder if it may be an original script with some elements of Vineland thrown in there. Kind of like how stories from Gary Goetzman's life were thrown in Licorice Pizza despite the movie not being his biopic (lol). It's possible. PTA's done it before with Upton Sinclair's Oil! when he adapted it into There Will Be Blood. The story relies very heavily on the dichotomy between the free-love '60s era and straitlaced Reagan-ized '80s, and doing a simple transplant to current day would be theoretically doable but I can't even begin to see how some of it would work, considering communes and hippie protests are such a key theme of the novel. If Anderson wants to use it as a template for an original idea, I'm fascinated to see how it would work, but judging the novel on its own, there's nothing that I would think would make it warrant this price tag . . . especially because there are Pynchon novels like Gravity's Rainbow, Mason & Dixon and Against the Day which all would merit that budget.

DiCaprio must be tired of the pressure of being the box office king and is now deliberately trying to end it. This movie is probably going to do that.

Is there any reason for Vineland to cost 100 mil.? Leo's probably getting bis 20 mil but that doesn't account for that much bigger a budget than anything PTA's ever done. The reports were also that it was contemporary but those could have just been wrong.
As Stephen noted it could be a very loose adaptation a TWBB was with Oil! in which case we don't really know anything about it's commercial prospects. If it's another rambly Inherent Vice type thing no one would have said it was his most commercial and it wouldn't have gotten a budget this big though.
