Maybe PTA can finally direct a good performance out of DiCaprio.

PTA's most commercial film ever? Then I guess it's not the adaptation of Vineland, because Pynchon is just not commercial in any way.

How long do PTA productions usually last? If shooting starts next week, can it be released by the end of the year?
2024 looks pretty barren with the strikes causing so many delays.

He's not a particularly slow filmmaker compared to, say, Malick or Scorsese, but he does take his time. I don't imagine we'll see it this year. 2024 actually looks pretty solid for contenders; it's 2025 that I think really will see the results of the strikes. It really depends on what the movie actually is. If it's a commercial film, it might bow in summer or they may hold it till the end of 2025. But I don't see them wanting to rush it out this year.

20M is probably going to DiCaprio but this still seems high. Licorice Pizza cost 40M. Phantom Thread cost 35M.

Will be interesting to see PTA directing a big budget film.

I think he's still adapting Vineland but not in a traditional way, just like he did with Oil and There Will Be Blood, and he will take those elements in a contemporary setting.
Also i guess Penn is replacing Phoenix, who didn't want to play second field to LDC, this Is a huge disappointment and downgrade.
I agree with others, it's going to be released in my opinion in late 2025.

If I'd heard PTA was doing a 100 mil film before I would have assumed that meant he was doing another Phantom Thread type costume thing on a larger scale, possibly with battle scenes. Since they're saying it's his "most commercial" and has a contemporary setting I'm wondering if it's an action film. PTA's talked about being a big action fan before so it makes sense he might want to do one. He hasn't made anything less than a 9/10 in more than 20 years so I trust him, a high school movie didn't sound good either to me at first before Licorice Pizza. Or could it be the rumored Trump Administration satire, not sure who Leo would be playing there.
For one of his normal films I'd think there was a shot of getting it out for Christmas but with this apparently being as large scale as it is probably not.

Sure, why not:
Surprised by the casting of Penn in what is probably not a throwaway like LP (I'm guessing) and it could be a big deal for getting his career back on track these shaky last 15 years
I love PTA but the truth is he needs DiCap - his movies - even his "most commercial" movies have a box office ceiling.......this probably wouldn't be made with ayone else (?)

PTA doesn't "need" DiCaprio. He's been able to make his movies just fine. They don't generally turn much of a profit but we've not had many "announced" projects suddenly fall apart because one of his movies didn't gross a certain amount. I'm sure he would love it if this movie was profitable (who wouldn't?) and casting DiCaprio goes a long way towards assuring that, but he's not really been an auteur unable to make a project due to box office on prior works. He's not Guillermo Del Toro trying to make In the Mountains of Madness or Scorsese's various fall-through projects. Anderson works in his own milieu and playground, and he has enough creative clout to get what he wants made. But his films don't carry a huge price tag to make, generally speaking. And I wonder if this report that this is his most "commercial" is because it has a higher budget specifically to accommodate the actor whose salary is higher than the budgets for every single one of PTA's films.

I know his filmography / resume - thanks Without him he may not be making "THIS" movie all I'm saying - I'm pretty sure LP lost money - or maybe broke slightly since it was COVID - and that was by far his most commercial movie I think he needs him here......ymmv.....

Even with Leo getting 20-30 mil that doesn't account for this being so much more expensive than anything PTA's ever done. Guessing this is just much larger scale as a production.

Yeah - he obviously kind of does need DiCap - ths is clearly not something where we should look at his past history of films for a sign........this is the first PTA film (allegedly) set in a modern setting in this century ffs ........like that alone is a sign he's probably not spending it on production design and costumes........... "While DiCaprio, Penn and Hall are the leads, the new film will have a big ensemble cast that is still falling into place" He's gonna be paying a big cast ffs...........and he's gonna be going for it...........whatever "it" is

No one's mentioned that the casting of Regina Hall feels more than likely to have been as a replacement for Tiffany Haddish, whom PTA has been talking about working with for years.
That child abuse scandal/lawsuit appears to have really done a number on Haddish's career, even though it was settled. PTA wasn't going to come running to her rescue apparently.

Still think it's most likely just a big production with the "commercial" rumors. Might have wanted to build big sets or there could be bombing scenes and explosions if it's the political thing, exc.

So Sean Penn is replacing Joaquin Phoenix???
Surely the biggest downgrade.
Even though it seems to be contemporary, i hope the film is as epic as TWBB.

I hope the film is actually good like Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, and PDL. That's all I ask. Leo doing some gonzo nonsense in a PTA fiasco that mysteriously has a 89 MC and 91 on RT isn't for me.
