Sweet.
Ew at The Grinch, though. Y’know, Early Man came out this year, too. You can’t be that desperate for a fifth nominee.
EDIT: And shit. Bohemian Rhapsody is happening.

• Motion Pictures: BlacKkKlansman Black Panther Bohemian Rhapsody Crazy Rich Asians The Favourite Green Book A Quiet Place Roma A Star Is Born Vice I would take out Crazy Rich Asians and A Quiet Place, and I think that's the Best Picture lineup. Although I guess Crazy Rich Asians, If Beale Street Could Talk, or First Man could sneak in, but I don't know what top 8 nominations CRA would get accept maybe screenplay, and IBSCT and FM don't seem to have any industry passion. I guess I'm predicting Adams now, which I figured would happen anyways even if I didn't want it to for this film unless Weisz can really pull off the Globe this Sunday which could set up her nicely for the other televised awards. She'd definitely win BAFTA, and have a better chance to win the Critics' Choice. Although I think she could win her second with just the Globe and BAFTA win.

Thoughts on Mary Poppins bombing? Well, it's doing very nicely at the box office and is certainly getting several nominations so I have no idea what 'bombing' you're talking about. The fact that it didn't get a PGA nod and is not getting a BP nod at the Oscars? I fully expected it (I didn't predict it at the PGA and am not predicting it at the Oscars) and I don't really care that much.

BlacKkKlansman
Black Panther
Bohemian Rhapsody
A Quiet Place
Roma
A Star Is Born
So I've seen the above 6, and where they to hit the the Oscar Best Picture line-up, it would be an interesting mix for sure, and a pretty good representation of the solid but underwhelming year in film that 2018 seems to have been. I only love one of them, I only dislike one of them, and the rest are a mixed bag of the good to very good. Something tells me I will love The Favourite and possibly Viced too, so they will elevate the final Oscar Best Picture line-up for me.
Also, with the Best Picture line-up shaping up as it seems to be, I don't think they ever needed the scrapped 'popular film' category, as good or bad, the real thing is shaping up that way.

when you put it in a list like this 2018 seems like a pretty disappointing year. Bohemian Rhapsody? Vice? Green Book? PGAs suck...

I think these 9 are our Best Picture nominees.
BlacKkKlansman Black Panther Bohemian Rhapsody The Favourite Green Book A Quiet Place Roma A Star Is Born Vice
I know First Man underperformed at the Box Office, but that shouldn't have taken it completely out of the Best Picture conversation.

I know First Man underperformed at the Box Office, but that shouldn't have taken it completely out of the Best Picture conversation. It's enjoyed something of a mild resurgence recently so I would say it's still very much in the conversation, and I wouldn't be surprised if the Academy nominates it over something like Mary Poppins Returns or Vice which didn't receive glowing reviews. In waves of hype it's easy to forget that the Academy still likes to honor these kinds of serious historical dramatic films and they often win out in the end (in terms of low-tier BP nods anyways). For example, The Post and Darkest Hour just last year. And First Man is already in the running for a couple tech nods and possibly supporting actress. A BP nomination is absolutely within reach.

Wow, this might be my least favorite set of PGA nominees in a long time, maybe ever. Specifically, I really don’t think Black Panther, Bohemian Rhapsody, Crazy Rich Asians, Green Book, and A Quiet Place deserve to be there. Black Panther is my highest ranked of those five and it’s my #34 best movie of the year. Can’t comment on Vice because I haven’t seen it yet. I would’ve loved to have seen films like Hereditary, First Man, First Reformed, Eighth Grade, and Widows get in instead.
Edit: Okay, I just got back from If Beale Street Could Talk and personally, I think that deserves a slot WAY more than the five movies I listed as being undeserving.

Vice maybe but I can't see A Quiet Place scoring a bp nod. A screenplay nod and possible supporting actress nod but not bp.

Vice maybe but I can't see A Quiet Place scoring a bp nod. A screenplay nod and possible supporting actress nod but not bp. Bet against it at your own peril. It made killer bank at the box office, Blunt and Krasinski are vigorously campaigning, and it's probably got a few techs more or less secured for nods (Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, maybe even Visual Effects and Score; I could also see it getting a random Editing nod). Supporting Actress and Screenplay would be enough to justify its Picture contention.

As someone who’s been somewhat pleased with the Academy’s Best Picture choices from Birdman onward, it definitely seems like they think the solution to declining ratings is to nominate very mainstream crowdpleasers which is disappointing.

I don't see Crazy Rich Asians missing BP nom. It's scored every single precursor so far. Even SAG ensemble which a lot of the frontrunners missed (ASIB and The Favourite, for examples).

Under the 10-nominee system I might've seen that happening, but how many Academy members will actually have it as their #1? Doesn't seem to me like much of a passion pick.
