Honestly hoping that we get Andrea Riseborough or Kerry Condon. Both of them have the sort of poise one could see in ancient Rome.

Yeah, looked at the years and if this is set 20ish years after the historical Commodus's death then it would be right around the time Severus died. Seems like too big of a coincidence for that not to be Denzel's part. Honestly hoping that we get Andrea Riseborough or Kerry Condon. Both of them have the sort of poise one could see in ancient Rome. Riseborough would be great as a dignified Roman lady, would love to see that.

I don't really have a POV on Gladiator 2 - except Mescal is going to have to Alpha Male step up here like apparently his Stanley Kowalski was on stage. Whoever Washington might play - it seems a mentor role but the way people are talking about the possible historical angle it could be a more regal role ala ToM which would be more interesting - the character being described as "bad ass" is something though...... I guess it depends how exactly they fictionalize things - which is fine - and not the same as The Woman King either btw - which fictionalized its specific history to the detriment of its drama imo....... But:What I do think is interesting is how people lose their shit in hilarious ways online - this is from the World of Reel comments section .......sounds good right? Except this never happened - this dude didn't see Washington play Macbeth on Broadway ....much less could he compare it to the film of Macbeth.......because Washington didn't play it on Broadway ......... and 2 people liked the comment.......this "Justin / JK" guy posts bullshit like this all the time under like a million names over the obvious sites - usually with Justin or JK in the name btw...........these big auteur movies : the PTA / the QT / Gladiator 2 / Heat 2 are going to be a cesspool of gossip-y shit for the next year Justin JK 18 hours ago I saw his Macbeth on Broadway. It floored me. He is one of the most magnetic stage actors to ever exist, just a supernova, and somehow I agree, the film version didn't have that huge presence he brought to the stage. Though the woman who played the witch and the production design. Chef's kiss.

Septimius Severus, though born in Africa, is said to have been Punic (so ultimately Levantine) on his father's side and Italian on his mother's, which hardly makes him black. F. Murray Abraham (Syrian father and Italian-American mother) would be a perfect fit. Unfortunately, he's too old. Of course, they may choose to go with colour-blind casting and ignore the historical record.

I really, really hope it's not the same formula all over again. Honest and rock-solid gladiator vs. scheming and dastardly emperor. If Denzel truly is cast as a kind of mentor, a Burgess Meredith of Ancient Rome, wise, tough, but with a heart of gold, then you'll already know the way the whole thing is going. The scenarios dreamed up a few posts above sound like a million times more interesting. Denzel is certainly fascinated with that whole tough teacher concept, mixed with his leanings towards Christian ethics. So you could see why he's interested. His charisma alone will enhance the part in any case. It just makes the whole thing so predictable from the get-go.
Mescal is a big question mark honestly. Crowe had a presence that will be hard to match. And he will be compared to Crowe no matter what.
The Septimus Severus angle, I don't know. As mentioned, I don't think he was as dark skinned as Washington. I mean, I don't care. Some parts of the internet will throw a temper tantrum. I don't give a fuck. But, honestly, they'll never cast Barry Keoghan as Denzel's son. The think pieces basically write themselves. If they'll darken his skin, it will only get worse.
The most interesting news out of this all is Washington doing a supporting part. Obviously we don't know how big his role is gonna be, but it's highly likely he won't be the focal point of the story. Maybe he finally entered the Sean-Connery-in-The-Untouchables-stage of his career. Which is a good thing I believe. Will give him more interesting things to do than those Equalizer things.

Can’t really comment on Quinn’s acting abilities as I haven’t seen him in anything but he does kinda have the look down for Caracalla, just slap a solid beard on him

He was good in the Small Axe episode he was in.

Wonder who Pascal could play. Maybe praetorian prefect and future [ill fated] emperor Macrinus?

He exited for this apparently: "Oscar-nominated actor Barry Keoghan may have just exited the Gladiator sequel, but he has another project waiting in the wings, as he’s set to star in Bird, which is the next film from acclaimed writer-director Andrea Arnold, Above the Line has exclusively learned.
There are no plot details available for Bird, as the project has really only been mentioned in a single line of the filmmaker’s bio on the Cannes Film Festival website. That said, it presented a scheduling conflict for Keoghan, according to multiple sources, and he was forced to leave the role of Emperor Geta in Gladiator 2 in the capable hands of Fred Hechinger (The White Lotus)."abovetheline.com/2023/05/18/barry-keoghan-bird-movie-andrea-arnold-gladiator-2-exit/
