Which ones did you vote for? I didn't vote. I'd have too many Italians on my list, none with chances of a placement, thus I renounced. It's a pity DeSica, Rossellini, Monicelli didn't make the list. For females, I expected at least Sofia Coppola in the top 50. It's a pity I probably cast the only vote for the Taviani Bros

Very cool list and presentation. Thanks for putting it together. I actually just watched 2001 in IMAX and I'm pleased that Kubrick topped the list.

#50: William Friedkin Points: 57 No. of Ballots: 5 Highest Ranking: 6th on one ballot “I consider myself just another member of the crew, the highest paid member of the crew. ” #49: Denis Villeneuve Points: 59 No. of Ballots: 6 Highest Ranking: 12th on two ballots “Film is pop art. It's not whether it's auteur cinema or not, that's a false distinction. Cinema is cinema. ” #48: Alfonso Cuarón Points: 61 No. of Ballots: 6 Highest Ranking: 10th on one ballot “When people see some depth you never intended that's really cool, you just put on a face and say "Oh, yeah, that was deep". What are you going to say? I'm just a moron with luck? ” #47: Jean Renoir Points: 62 No. of Ballots: 4 Highest Ranking: 3rd on one ballot “The saving grace of the cinema is that with patience and a little love we may arrive at that wonderfully complex creature which is called man. ” #46: Michelangelo Antonioni Points: 63 No. of Ballots: 5 Highest Ranking: 7th on one ballot “When I am shooting a film I never think of how I want to shoot something; I simply shoot it. My technique, which differs from film to film, is wholly instinctive and never based on prior considerations.” Denis is good, makes my list. I like what I've seen from all the others (especially Renoir) but I need to check out more. I really dig Antonoini too. Fuck anyone who agrees that Zabriskie Point sucks.

#39 (Tie): François Truffaut Points: 84 No. of Ballots: 6 Highest Ranking: 13th on three ballots “Film lovers are sick people. ” #39 (Tie): Jean-Luc Godard Points: 84 No. of Ballots: 6 Highest Ranking: 4th on one ballot “There is no point in having sharp images when you've fuzzy ideas. ” #39 (Tie): Wes Anderson Points: 84 No. of Ballots: 8 Highest Ranking: 7th on one ballot “That's the kind of movie that I like to make, where there is an invented reality and the audience is going to go someplace where hopefully they've never been before. The details, that's what the world is made of. ” #38: Peter WeirPoints: 85 No. of Ballots: 8 Highest Ranking: 3rd on one ballot “I'm still amazed how you can put your pen down and think not a line can be changed... You've finally got it right. You pick it up ten days later, and it's all so bad. ” #37: John Carpenter Points: 89 No. of Ballots: 8 Highest Ranking: 2nd on one ballot “In France, I'm an auteur; in Germany, a filmmaker; in Britain; a genre film director; and, in the USA, a bum. ” #36: Mike LeighPoints: 90 No. of Ballots: 6 Highest Ranking: 1st on one ballot “I like my films. I can't understand directors who don't watch their films after they've made them. If you don't like them, how the fuck can you expect anyone else to? ” I see we're getting the French New Wave guys out of the way early. Even though I've only seen 3 from Godard, I think he's worthy of a Top 25 spot.

#29 (Tie) : Krzysztof Kieslowski Points: 118 No. of Ballots: 8 Highest Ranking: 8th on four ballots “If I have a goal, then it is to escape from this literalism. I'll never achieve it; in the same way that I'll never manage to describe what really dwells within my character, although I keep on trying.” #29 (Tie) : Carl Theodor Dreyer Points: 118 No. of Ballots: 7 Highest Ranking: 3rd on one ballot “Nothing in the world can be compared to the human face. It is a land one can never tire of exploring. There is no greater experience in a studio than to witness the expression of a sensitive face under the mysterious power of inspiration. To see it animated from inside, and turning into poetry. ” #28: Werner Herzog Points: 120 No. of Ballots: 9 Highest Ranking: 2nd on one ballot “Every gray hair on my head I call Kinski.” #27: David Fincher Points: 129 No. of Ballots: 11 Highest Ranking: 4th on one ballot “You're supposed to have an idea of what it is you're trying to do, right? Aren't you being overpaid to have that? My job is to know what the fuck I want. ” #26: Brian De Palma Points: 132 No. of Ballots: 8 Highest Ranking: 3rd on one ballot “I like stylization. I try to get away with as much as possible until people start laughing at it.” Dreyer should be higher.

#24: Quentin Tarantino Points: 143 No. of Ballots: 10 Highest Ranking: 3rd on one ballot “When people ask me if I went to film school, I tell them, "No, I went to films". ” Too low.
Or maybe I'm too new school.

#22: Christopher Nolan Points: 149 No. of Ballots: 12 Highest Ranking: 1st on two ballots “Every film should have its own world, a logic and feel to it that expands beyond the exact image that the audience is seeing. ” Y'all are heretics and need to be nailed to a cross for not putting NOLAN at #1.

Only just now catching up on the list... --Never would've thought that Bergman would place so high. He only ranked on the lower end of my ballot so I think he's a little too high, but I'm not gonna complain about an inspired selection like that. --PTA is too low honestly. Most distinct cinematic voice of his generation and has a higher percentage of masterpieces (he has at least four) in his filmography than any other filmmaker I can think of off the top of my head. At least he made the top ten, but I honestly thought he'd be a bit higher. --Loooove to see that Lynch made the top five, but he's another one I honestly thought would be a spot or two higher considering the board's taste. Not at all surprised he got the most #1 placements, I guess I'm certainly not unique in that sense. --Placements for Nolan, Tarantino, and Fincher are all pretty fitting, mostly in the sense that none of them are any higher than they are. --Kurosawa in the top ten is fantastic but he should also be a bit higher. --Kubrick is a predictable number one, but it's pretty hard to deny that he doesn't deserve it. --Woody Allen at #12 --No women Anyway... great work, Johnny! Thanks for putting this together, great presentation.

That his other works remain underseen must be the reason he isn't higher. People really should track down Chimes at Midnight, Othello, The Trial and F for Fake. They're literally all on YouTube.

Pretty great list. Satyajit Ray is probably the one "unforgivable" omission. Not just one of the greatest directors but a superior artist all around.

#10: Paul Thomas Anderson Points: 297 No. of Ballots: 19 Highest Ranking: 1st on two ballots “No matter how many times you do it, you don't get used to the sadness - for me at least - of coming to the end of a film.” And here I was thinking I was new school for saying Tarantino should be higher but PTA makes the Top 10. I won't complain about his placement though since I haven't seen a whole lot from him.

#8: Steven Spielberg Points: 299 No. of Ballots: 18 Highest Ranking: 1st on one ballot “Before I go off and direct a movie I always look at 4 films. They tend to be: Seven Samurai, Lawrence of Arabia, It's a Wonderful Life and The Searchers. ” Noice.

#2: Ingmar BergmanPoints: 415 No. of Ballots: 24 Highest Ranking: 1st on one ballot “I throw a spear into the darkness. That is intuition. Then I must send an army into the darkness to find the spear. That is intellect.” Bergman was my #8 and I def feel like he'll place higher on my personal list as I watch more of his stuff.

My 25 points helped Bergman rise from #6 to #2! I'm glad I participated. Thanks, Johnny. This was fun
