Too bad the title The Legend of the Holy Drinker is already taken. 😆 But the tagline writes itself: His drinking days are behind him now.

I'm not a big fan of the boxing genre (gimme The Harder They Fall, Fat City, Rocky...) but they never made a movie on Fitzsimmons vs Sharkey, the 1896 heavyweight championship? Fitz had won a big fight several months earlier - a fight organized by Judge Roy Bean - but this was the event of the year. Fitz was the clear favorite... despite mid-mourning the loss of his pet lion. Sharkey was some sailor kid from Ireland. And who did they get to referee? Wyatt Earp....... he was near 50y/o and desperately trying to stratify his own legend. Apparently barely anyone knew about his lawman Tombstone days, until magazines were promoting 'em before this fight. His rep stopped short when he named Sharkey the winner on a low blow, all but confirmed to be a fix. Now a household name, a verb ("Don't earp it!")... He was tried in court but it was all dismissed bc boxing was still illegal in San Francisco to begin with. Trades ravaged Earp as a joke and historians say he was known for nothing more so in his lifetime. Doesn't really look like him but I'm casting Dafoe. www.theguardian.com/sport/2015/jul/22/wyatt-earp-botched-heavyweight-boxing-championship

I posted in the "Which role would you like to see Saorise Ronan play" thread a few weeks back with a pic of Empress Theodora, wife of Justinian the Great and I'm circling back to that here. I've not heard of anything, big screen or small screen, giving the proper screen treatment to Justinian's reign. Would make a great historical epic. Theodora has lots of great, YAS QUEEN moments and I'm already envisioning the Oscars clip when Theodora tells Justinian she'd rather die in the riots engulfing all of Constantinople than to ever know what it's like to not be an Empress again, changing Justinian's mind and getting him to stay and put down the riots when he was considering fleeing the city and abdicating (she comes from a humble background, and by that I mean she was a child prostitute). Can't forget about Belisarius and the reconquest of Italy also, who probably deserves his own sprawling epic film/miniseries.

Not that it wouldn't be a fantastic role for her, but you can't really do Justinian without a GOT sized budget and length at least, certainly not a film. Plus it would be hard to film in Turkey due to political climate (Turkish government isn't very interested in recognizing Istanbul and Anatolia's Greek past, specially with Erdogan in charge).

Georgi Tenno was a "committed escaper" in the Soviet death camps: he made it his mission to plan and execute escapes from every prison he was sent to, refusing to accept the idea that he was a prisoner. There are two whole chapters devoted to him in Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's The Gulag Archipelago. One of those chapters was written by Tenno himself, telling the story of how he successfully escaped the camp Solzhenitsyn was in, staying on the run for weeks (IIRC) before getting nabbed. It is gripping, cinematic stuff, and would make a crackerjack thriller. If you want to see a firsthand account of a prison escape in what was arguably the most evil penitentiary system in the world, give those two chapters - The Committed Escaper & The White Kitten - a try. Honestly, I'm amazed that it hasn't become a movie already.

The Toynbee Tiles - I've been watching a lot of conspiracy movies lately that I like - or at least I like parts of a lot - History of the Occult and to a lesser extent Broadcast Signal Inclusion ...... This is a fascinating thing that could be the basis of a great movie and since it's unresolved you could go a lot of ways with it.....in a very dark, obsessive way.....suits our time too : conspiracies and weird, incomprehensible mystery....... www.historynet.com/one-deadly-dude-marquis-de-mores.htmThe Marquis de Morès and his American wife Medora - between 1883 and 1886. With the acclaim and popularity of Power of the Dog, Yellowstone, etc. this would be a slightly similar Western with an aristocratic, outsider twist. Morès came to the Dakota badlands in '83 with $10MIL and started his own town named Medora (still there) to build a cattle empire. A distant heir to the throne of France himself, he lived like a king - a 24 room mansion with over a dozen servants - and also like an outlaw, arrested several times for murder (acquitted) and daring anyone to a duel, including a young Teddy Roosevelt who lived nearby and who he often clashed with over land. Teddy, like them, was also to be thrust out by the extremely harsh winter of '86 that turned the Marquis's boomtown into a ghost town (the population went from 250 to nearly none). They were in their late 20s but you could go older. I'd cast, who else, Louis Garrel? and maybe Julia Garner cus she's on my mind? can't think of anyone for Teddy....

We're being flooded right now with mini-series on real life scandals, and actresses with accents, and so..... what about Miss Cleo? She was a household name around the late 90s... hired by the infomercial Psychic Reader Network, she was a tarot reading shaman from Jamaica......except she wasn't. And the millions of calls they advertised as free.....weren't. She was the face of a billion dollar fraud lawsuit in 2002 and she was outed as a struggling lesbian actress from Seattle. Despite the controversial character, she was seen "playing" Cleo again a few years later for a Florida used car dealership. Apparently, Queen Latifah did a riff on Miss Cleo in a 2001 episode of Spin City. I feel like Alfre Woodard or CCH Pounder (shoutout to her radio host in Psycho IV) would've been perfect but by the time of the scandal they might've aged over the role. Idk who'd play it now, but it'd be ripe in the meta layers and dissecting of performance, the put-on accent etc, the exploitation of both the character (by the network) and the weakness of others (emotion, money).

How about a heart-spinning and pulse-quickening thriller about the Moonlight BP announcement? Told in real time or some bullshit like that?

Since we’re on the topic of real life business scandals/frauds/etc who do we think would be great casting as Chamath Palihapitiya and Cathie Wood when they inevitably get their respective miniseries treatments?

The Tawana Brawley hoax... almost inconceivable that this wasn't filmed because it's too much of powder keg to mess with. What kind of Art is "too dangerous" to actually tell? GTFO This case set up the culture we live in now - where we "believe the victims" (a ridiculous phrase), where we especially believe them if they are PoC (which is you know, um, racist), and a female (which is you know, um, absurd). This case set up our "lying depending who wants to believe that lie" culture too - like Jussie Smollet - but in a far more ugly way.....created a genuinely risible person you can see on TV every week, Al Sharpton, a genuinely fascinating dichotomy on race, the effects of the media and on our US institutions...... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tawana_Brawley_rape_allegations

I just found out about this wild event called The Markovic Affair involving Alain Delon, a French President Georges Pompidou, a gangster Francois Marcantoni, the murder of Delon's bodyguard (who had nude pictures of the President's wife on him - allegedly planted) that is unsolved to this day. The bodyguard, before he was murdered, sent a letter to someone saying if anything happened to him it was the gangster Marcantoni and Delon's fault. So you have gangsters, a movie star, a major politician, and a murder that remains a mystery to this day. This sounds absolutely crazy and scandalous and not talked about enough.

I've said it elsewhere, but I need the Safdie Brothers to make a film about Will Smith's publicist on the night of the Oscars.

Or just on will smith’s publicist period I'd support a reimagining of The Player following a publicist to the stars having the worst day of his life, featuring real life actors playing awful versions of themselves.
