That's a big drop from the old poll for Newman (and Lemmon).

PSH - probably the greatest post 70s American actor I thought you used to always say that about Sean Penn. Yes, it's between them and Phoenix too I suppose (I haven't seen Phoenix's most recent work), The Master went a long way with me and was late in his career - I consider it a co-lead .......it's arguable where to place him post 70s guys.

That's a great picture of Hoffman.
From 1967-88 he can stand with anyone imo. I also agonized over him because I didn't consider theater or TV for anyone on my lists but on the basis of 1 TV performance - Death of A Salesman - he would have jumped up a single spot and he was pretty high so it did matter sort of.

Damn I'm laaaaate. Phoenix too high as I expected. Denzel where I though he would be, he doesn't have the movies from PTA, Scorsese, etc to completely put the kind of cinephiles that are on here in his pocket, still a good place tho. Expected Leo a bit higher.
Let's see the rest...

Yes! With so few placements left, I was scared Hackman would be left out.

So the rest are Pacino, De Niro, Nicholson, Brando and DDL?
Christopher Walken didn't hid an uncomfortable piece of metal up his ass for two years so that you'd vote Gosling over him.

Glad the three true GOATS (De Niro, Pacino, Brando) are likely top 5...
No Robert Mitchum or Harvey Keitel stings though.

There are very, very few actors in American film history that have had what Jack Nicholson has - the mix of talent, charisma, a sort of daring in a way (though it doesn't first appear that way) and an uncanny way to know what he can do and what the public wants from him. He's part Bogart, part Brando, but more than any of that he's entirely his own creation.
