While we obviously wish that Deakins had been available to shoot this, I think Greig Fraser's work looks very good. Really curious to see how the Baron looks.I believe he was in the trailer for like half a sec.

Chalamet looks deeply miscast here.
Too goofy and not mature enough to play Paul.

Looks cool, but isn't it a bit late to give a trailer that doesn't tell casual audiences shit? This trailer should have come out with the Vanity Fair first look back in April and we should be getting a more plot or character-intensive trailer now.

It really feels like WB is just throwing up their hands in the face of COVID.

General thoughts: cinematography looks gorgeous. I think the projection in my theater for the teaser before Tenet was weak, because the teaser (and Tenet itself) looked much better on my rewatch in IMAX. It looks like a cross between The Last Jedi and the cinematography for Man of Steel (one of the two things along with Zimmer's score I actually liked about Snyder's trainwreck). Every single cast member looks perfect in their roles. I love the look of the shields. Multiple moments of the book look captured with STUNNING perfection, namely the aerial shots of Caladan and Geidi Prime, the box scene, the arrival on Arrakis, the Sardaukar troops levitating down into action (SO SICK!), the assault on House Atreides, and that brief glimpse of the 'thopter in the sand storm. Visually, it looks to hit that sweet spot between grounded and epic in scope.
Personally, the worms look great and probably the most accurate interpretation of what actual sandworms would look like, but it's not quite how I pictured them in the books. Also, the cinematography of the desert leaves a bit to be desired. I always pictured the night to be captured with a surreal purple hue, and the day to look closer to the Vegas section of BR2049. Instead they're going for a much more naturalistic approach. Obviously no adaptation could ever match exactly what's in the reader's mind, but I figure I'd include my very minor visual nitpicks alongside all the elements I love that look directly torn from the page onto screen.
What actually excites me most is that it seems like this version is working hard to sell the emotion. The events need to feel brutal, weighty, and fraught with peril. It looks like the film understands this tone, what with the foreboding of the Reverend Mother's dialogue throughout the trailer. Those small moments like the battle salute between Duncan and Paul may not cast an impression to non-readers but for this fan of the book it conveys that character relationships will be properly placed in the foreground of this adaptation. Lynch's film had many great qualities but it failed to sell any of the characters and the arc of House Atreides in general on a visceral, emotional level. It felt interesting but very cold and distant. It looks like Dune (2020(?)) will handle the pathos much better.
I know some book fans are complaining that they've substituted the term "jihad" for "crusade," but it really doesn't surprise me that a movie studio would ask to make this change. I'm personally fine with it AS LONG as it doesn't foreshadow a deeper sanitizing of the allegorical themes (re: American/Middle Eastern politics) or any further excision of the Islamic cultural influence within the universe. The fact that Herbert drew upon Islam alongside Judeo-Christian themes is one of the more fascinating elements of Arrakis' conception. I don't think Denis would allow that to happen, though. I like that in interviews he's called this film a "wake up call for the youth." Makes sense that he'd cast Chalamet and Zendaya to appeal to the Zoomers since subtextually it looks like this is going to be one giant climate change allegory to Gen-Z (and this fits perfectly into the politics of the book).
Super stoked. I still fear we have a gigantic impending flop on our hands (and generally it seems like this trailer is exciting fans of the book WAY more than general moviegoers; never a good sign), but we should just be thankful WB took a chance on THIS version of the notoriously un-adaptable source material.

I couldn't tell what was going on but i think it could be a good movie. Not a very good trailer unfortunately. Also Frasier has done great stuff with narrowcolor palette. It's not resonating here nor in The Batman.
As predictable as the music choice was, I dig it.

Chalamet looks deeply miscast here. Too goofy and not mature enough to play Paul. That weird whisker he does before answering Rampling question was weird.

Chalamet looks deeply miscast here. Too goofy and not mature enough to play Paul. I don't understand what you mean. Chalamet looks cool, like the protagonist of a Final Fantasy video game, as Paul Atreides is supposed to look. I don't even know who else they could have cast. Every young actor I can think of wouldn't be comely enough or be able to radiate swagger in an aestheticized way. Frankly, I think it's one of the most inevitable casting choices ever. Bardem as Stilgar is also very well-chosen.

Even on a meta level, his insane fandom speaks to his general likability and charisma with audiences, which can translate very well to what we'll see on screen. There are better actors out there from his age group in general, but in terms of this role, I can't think of anyone who would suit the role in the current field of twenty-somethings.

Didn't have any expectations after the disaster that was 2049 but this still looks garbage, ugly Apple aesthetic. Chalamet is so out of place.

The trailer was meh but so have the trailers for the other Villeneuve films like Arrival and BR 2049. They turned out to be masterpieces.

Chalamet looks deeply miscast here. Too goofy and not mature enough to play Paul. you've clearly not read Dune, then. and if you did, then...Jesus. you're the fucking goof here, then. paul atreides is 15 years old in Dune, fyi. with that said, i still don't think this version of Dune looks good at all. Villeneuve and his drab, desaturated color shit, yay...ugh. certainly doesn't look to have the visual flair and fantastic production design of lynch's (flawed, but interesting) film.

I agree, which is why I have a feeling this may get delayed to maybe early 2021. Villeneuve himself said that he’s literally racing against the clock to get this film finished in time. Not to mention that there were some additional shoots not so long ago too, so I presume there is still a lot of post work to be done. Hope that isn’t the case though!
