It's on, kids. Festival opener Borg/McEnroe, starring Shia LaBeouf. - The Guardian: Shia LaBeouf is perfectly cast as superbrat tennis ace John McEnroe, but this replay of his 1980 Wimbledon final with Björn Borg fails to create drama (2/5).
- Variety: Though “Borg McEnroe” isn’t top of its subgenre, it’s dazzling in its own right.
- IndieWire: LaBeouf is the saving grace of Janus Metz's relentlessly self-serious sports drama (C).
- THR: An acting-forward sports film capable of engaging viewers who don't know their 30-loves from their birdies or hat tricks, it has mainstream theatrical appeal, though it may draw more attention on pay cable.
- The Playlist: The film is an admirable effort to recapture the era in tennis and the personalities of two players that would change the shape of the sport. Unfortunately, the drama is never as electrifying as the titular showdown (B-).

Armando Iannucci's The Death of Stalin: - Variety: “The Death of Stalin” is not without flashes of brilliance, but so much of the movie simply doesn’t work.
- IndieWire: The one-liners come hard and fast in this winning, hilarious satire from the director of "In the Loop" (A-).
- The Guardian: The Death Of Stalin is superbly cast, and acted with icy and ruthless force by an A-list lineup. There are no weak links. Each has a plum role; each squeezes every gorgeous horrible drop (5/5).
- THR: Though not as stuffed with rapid-fire laughs as In the Loop, this makes a very fine sophomore outing. It will more than satisfy Iannucci's fans at arthouses.
- The Wrap: “The Death of Stalin” is Iannucci doing what he always does: taking a biting, profane and hilarious look at the foibles of the blowhards and nitwits in power.
- Screen Daily: The novelty of his volcanically vulgar, deeply cynical tone may have worn off some, but Iannucci has nonetheless crafted another poisonous cocktail of naked ambition and blustery bravado with a decidedly bitter aftertaste.

Stronger reviews The Guardian 4/5 www.theguardian.com/film/2017/sep/08/stronger-review-jake-gyllenhaal-boston-marathon#img-1Wegotthiscovered 3.5/5 wegotthiscovered.com/movies/stronger-review-tiff-2017/Tapley: Kristopher Tapley @kristapley Jake Gyllenhaal is superb once again in "Stronger." Tatiana Maslany does quite a lot with her own familiar role as well. Nix Santos @nxsnts How's the film? Kristopher Tapley Hits the usual emotional notes but it has one or two interesting visual ideas. Joe Utichi @joeutichi Jake Gyllenhaal is on top form with #Stronger, about Jeff Bauman. A rousing, emotional story. @tatianamaslany brilliant. #tiff17 erickohn @erickohn STRONGER is pretty straightforward, but has some of DGG's most emotional filmmaking since SNOW ANGELS. Gyllenhaal sells it. #TIFF Kate Erbland @katerbland STRONGER: We really don't talk enough about how damn good Jake Gyllenhaal is.

Having recently seen The Zookeeper's Wife (and lamenting at the criminal underuse of Michael McElhatton), I need for Chastain to get a home-run soon.

Having recently seen The Zookeeper's Wife (and lamenting at the criminal underuse of Michael McElhatton), I need for Chastain to get a home-run soon. Zookeeper's Wife keeps things too safe and glossy to really dig deep into its subject matter and hit home, but it's got a handful of lovely passages and Chastain is reliably solid, especially in the second half, when she gets the most to do and sells it quite well. I could've done without the accents, but I got used to them pretty quick. I'm thrilled that Molly's Game seems to be the strongest material she's had to work with in a while, though.

First batch of tweets for I, Tonya is very, very positive. Janney's getting lots of Oscar talk; could be the Supporting Actress frontrunner we've been lacking all year.

I fucking knew it! Amazing movie, I was seriously floored. Best dark comedy since To Die For.
Dreading the inevitable Margot Robbie nom, but Allison Janney and the screenplay are winning and I'm here for it.

Is it that inevitable, though? It's a super crowded category, and I see a lot of "Robbie is great n' all BUT JANNEY" tweets.
Looks like holding off on a deal with CBS Films is gonna pay off big time. Who could get it? Searchlight, Focus and A24 have their hands full; Netflix will probably put up a fight but might be passed over if they're looking for an awards push; Weinstein is all over the map this year; Annapurna is a question mark. Perhaps Amazon or SPC? Or maybe they stick to CBS?

I'd love to be wrong though, as it's a committed, solid turn but I wasn't overly impressed.

New reviews are up, B+ from Indiewire, Positive review from THR & Variety and a C+ from The Playlist. This doesn't include two positive reviews from minor critics already on RT. Reviews are definitely better than what I expected so far, and Gyllenhaal will surely be in good shape for a nom with his ink and the pretty good reception.

Damn, finally the most underrated actress in this century gets her due, oscar is envitable, sorry Michelle! Allison Janney is not underrated. The woman is the second-most award-winning actress in TV history. It's true that she hasn't had the same success on the big screen, but "underrated" is not at all an appropriate descriptor of her.

Trade reviews for last night's buzzed premieres. Molly's Game: - Variety: “Molly’s Game” delivers one of the screen’s great female parts — a dense, dynamic, compulsively entertaining affair, whose central role makes stunning use of Chastain’s stratospheric talent.
- The Playlist: Sorkin’s swordsman-like pen continually keeps the picture engaging; his knack for one-liners and absurd dialogue detail remains finely attuned. What Sorkin’s writing can’t gloss over is his lack of experience behind the camera, and it’s what makes “Molly’s Game” a mostly good movie instead of a great one (B).
- THR: In his overdue directorial debut, Sorkin both entertains and makes you lean in to absorb every detail of this wild tale, which boasts a stellar cast to help tell it. Chastain roars through the performance with a force and take-no-prisoners attitude that keeps one rapt.
- The Guardian: The Oscar-winning screenwriter makes his directorial debut with the long and rambling tale of ‘poker princess’ Molly Bloom, brought half-heartedly to life by a miscast Jessica Chastain (2/5).
- Screen Daily: A slightly overlong running time is perhaps the main obstacle which could limit the film’s success, but the rattling pace of the edit means that the film never feels baggy or loses momentum. It seems certain to be a significant awards season player, with Jessica Chastain in particular a near certainty for a clutch of nominations.
- IndieWire: Arguably the first great poker film ever made, the result is a typically staccato and silver-tongued drama that boasts a zillion killer lines, at least two of the year’s most exciting performances, and a rare understanding of the difference between power and pride (A-).
I, Tonya: - Variety: A fresh, chancy, and wickedly enjoyable movie. It’s a serious blast, with a plot that zigs and zags (but only because it sticks, within reason, to the facts), and a cast of characters who are so eccentrically scuzzy that maybe no one could have dreamed them up.
- Collider: With a wickedly sharp script and outstanding performances from the lead cast, especially Margot Robbie, I, Tonya rewrites the stale script both of Harding’s legacy and the tragedy-to-triumph sports narrative (B+).
- IndieWire: A bitter and bleakly funny black comedy; like its namesake, the film only achieves greatness for a few brief moments, and the best things about it (e.g. Janney’s character) are seldom allowed to expand beyond the stereotypes that make them so easy to understand, but Gillespie’s biopic sticks the landing because it never forgets one of its very first lines: Tonya Harding is America, and she always has been (B+).
- THR: Proving, after many a stolen scene, that she's capable of carrying a picture in the lead role, Margot Robbie takes obvious pleasure in playing figure skater Tonya Harding, from her vulnerable teens to her present-tense, take-it-or-leave-it retirement. The lively and lurid film has solid commercial legs under it and marks a rebound for Gillespie.

Best Actress is insane this year. Keep an eye out for Emma Thompson in The Children Act too. Written by Ian McEwan, from the director of Iris and Notes on a Scandal.
