* Jeff Rosenstock's post No Dream (2020) output is so staggeringly inept - particularly his 2023 stuff - I can not think of another formerly good recent artist with a great-ish album too (Worry, 2016) - who has collapsed in this way and it's getting worse now - maybe Liz Phair? ........we have a new worst song of the year too - the douche chill-inducing, shitty beyond belief "Healmode"..............fncking awful........and boygenius made Not Strong Enough and 100 Gecs made a whole crap album this year .....so that's saying something
* Here's how to tell the 60s are somewhat overrated outside of the legends - try to make a top 100 albums but do not repeat any artist - see how fast you start to struggle after Dylan, Kinks, Who, Beatles, Stones, Velvet Underground.........maybe you won't but...........maybe your taste is spotty too. Just sayin - other artists made great records but the great artists disproportionately dominated the album format
* Here Comes The Nice by the Small Faces is one of the most fascinating songs ever - especially singles (!) ever - about a drug dealer in plain language - mentions "speed" directly .........it's baffling that this made it out as is in 1967 - even its topic is odd for the hippie era it exists in.......even the manner of the song is odd and poppy with no grand "dark" statement
* Coach Party have shaved off all the edge from their music so they now sound like your Big Sister's diary - their debut album has none of the songs from their hit or miss EPs - bad idea........really bad..........how bad? We'll find out this Fall............but the 4 released tracks are various levels of "I'll pass" - Jess Eastwood is like Lydia Night - not as steep a betrayal but a betrayal nonetheless ..........prove me wrong

* Olivia Rodrigo's charmless "bad idea right?" is the most grossly overstuffed Pop song since U2's "Vertigo" or something like that - none of it works - it's aggressively annoying in its try hard profanity (again, wtf), sonic template, the everything but the kitchen sink approach............yet another a sub-"good 4 U" that makes you forget what you liked about that song back then.......
* Jon Bon Jovi once made fun of The Replacements - without hearing them btw - and years later The Hives....... which sorta proves he is not only shitty musically (he is) - he's also quite stupid .........the brilliant new Trapdoor Solution could be how The Hives jokingly plan his murder in about 1 minute......
* The Stranglers - Black and White (1978) - in its original 12 song version - is an extremely underrated album - like bafflingly so - like so much so you are not sure what critics who dislike(d) it were actually expecting or listening to at all.
This not only sounds a bit like an earlier Gang of Four - who copied some of the ideas here and transferred it to guitar - but it also sounds a bit like Franz Ferdinand - 25 years ahead of schedule........it just doesn't have a hit single.....but so what?

I still find the idea that U2's Vertigo is “overstuffed” bewilderingly funny... it’s like saying the McDonald's McFlurry – with just a few M&M's drizzled on the surface – is overstuffed when I’m over here enjoying a (vastly superior) Dairy Queen Blizzard that’s way more thoroughly mixed and superoverstuffed with all sorts of good shit because all those added flavors and textures make the experience more satisfying.

* People who only listen to the Itunes top 40 are possibly dangerous sociopaths - more than the people who have given up altogether.........the first group are hausfraus, and sheep, the 2nd group are stubborn tight asses who are admirable in their close-mindedness...........both are awful, but only 1 is funny
* Who is the best American mainstream band of the 70s? Not associated with Punk or Power Pop........it's a gross set of options..........Cheap Trick doesn't count - Power Pop, duh.......early Blue Oyster Cult? J. Geils? ZZ Top? Aerosmith? Um, Fleetwood Mac (God, no, not fully American anyway) I mean whatever........ it's bleak.........every way you look at it .............you lose........
* Sam Smith isn't good...........neither is Kim Petras
* There is a new version of Sam Smith in every era of UK Pop - more than 1 - Boy George, Kevin Rowland, the guy from Kajagoogoo etc.
* After 3 days of playing it non-stop, I think Trapdoor Solution is among the greatest 1 minute songs of all time ........and it's funny......

* Maybe I spoke to soon because this is Coach Party's least eager to please song in a long time .........."Parasite" is an aggro short spazz attack with a strobe light seizure inducing video .......I've even come around - a little bit - on 2 of the other 4 tracks maybe this is just a 6 / 10 but.......maybe they will prove me wrong ater all...... * "Rich Girl" (1976) by Hall & Oates is actually the Common People of its day........except you know............ not remotely as good * The Moody Blues "I'm Just A Singer In A Rock and Roll Band" (1972) is one of the best songs by a shitty band - with one of the worst opening lines "I'm just a wanderin' on the face of this Earth"...........ugh............it's a real guilty pleasure.......and maybe not even that pleasurable really.........

People always argue whether Oasis was a "great band" or "not" (answer - they obviously were through The Masterplan ffs and a better album band than Blur btw who never touched the first 2 Oasis studio records) - but even their biggest fans admit that lyrically they were - at best - serviceable...........at worst - simplistic........and yet arguably the 4 most (or 4 "of the most") literate UK Rock bands of the past 20 years - Libertines, Arctic Monkeys, Fontaines D.C. and The Clockworks all love Oasis and those lyrics and made debut albums that owe a whole lot to Oasis ....hmmmmmm.....sometimes what we in the US are hearing.....is in the words of Jack White "hearing a different song"

I've heard very little of Caroline Polachek....... waiting. I'd say Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey, and Kylie Minogue are well above CMAT. Don't think CMAT reaches those kinda heights, but she is very moderately keel in most of her work. I might take CMAT over Olivia Rodrigo, SZA, and Miley Cyrus tho. Those are more kinda "I kinda like this song I heard on the radio" artists, but I don't actively indulge in them. I suppose we're all guilty of sharing some hobbies with 14 year olds. The Beatles, The Godfather, Billy Wilder (back in the days), Al Pacino movies. Some historically famous entities had lots of average 14 year old consumers.

Well Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey and Kylie Minogue have never made 1 pacinoyes Best of List in the MAR era ..........just sayin CMAT has 2 and........that stuff matters a lot In general, 14 year old girls do have better music taste than people on MAR tbh - I mean no 14 year old girl has to me - ever - thrown a hissy fit about Pet Sounds being overrated, and Led Zeppelin or Vampire Weekend totally sucking ...........they just pat me on the head, tell me I'm cute and tell me to lay off the coffee or I might fall and break a hip

Some really musically savvy 14 year old girls around. I'm really serious on this. They're also very adept at filling in your gaps of cultural knowledge on music. I think this board is mostly just not very interested in music is my general perception. Well if we're going by over-the-top takes.... I don't listen to the Beatles. I just around some Davie Bowie and The Smiths songs, but I'd rather get the singles collection from both.... and i feel that's all I need. And I'd say Ultravox > The Smiths. Hawkwind > Pink Floyd. Where most are thinking.... who's Hawktravox? Some transformers? I find When in Rome's The Promise better than all but like 4 Smiths songs, which makes that relevant because The Smiths have way more tracks.

The board mostly treats Pop Music the way they treat Cinema - that "famous auteurs" make the best work and the best work format MUST be the "album" format......which is why if you look at our best albums lists it's always artists you can package in formatted ways into a canon........ I'm guilty of it too ..........but I always try to fight it and say stuff that upsets that orthodoxy like: * The Beatles peaked in 65 - 67 * Bowie has less "great" all-timer albums than T. Rex (but more great songs) * Wilco was better before Yankee Hotel Foxtrot .....and the single can be argued as more important than the album format - in some cases at least - and since we were talking about females earleir - the greatest single by a female artist - and it isn't a "famous auteur" either

* I used to really like The Regrettes - but "That's What Makes Me Love You" is utter shit - nothing good since What Am I Gonna Do Today?. What is happening to this girl, and this band - and I think I mentioned them first on this board so I'm not a recent convert ......... Why couldn't she be friends with Amy Taylor or something instead of Olivia Rodrigo because the field is kicking your ass - and not just Wet Leg either - since you decided you want to BE Olivia Rodrigo. Also stop cursing in every song - it doesn't even make sense to do it now. Not excited for this record at all.......surprise me Lydia - come on. Apparently they broke up .......who knew? Unimpressive and shit Lydia......I'll always love you.......from when you were good I mean On November 14, 2023, the band announced that they were splitting up to "work on other projects." In tandem, they announced a farewell show at the Fonda Theater on December 21, 2023.

* The Sleeveens (2024) scuzzy, anthemic debut album is a sort of big canvas tribute to cult music:
Evoking The Modern Lovers, New York Dolls, Pogues, and literally covering a song by The Undertones - the album is like a mix of things that became "known" far later in Pop Culture than when they were released........it's an incredibly sly..........and at times incredibly good record........it's only real reference to "Classic Rock" is the poetics of Van Morrison which doesn't fit anywhere at all........yet it sounds very much like a swaggering Classic Rock informed by bands who never got close to being on a Classic Rock radio playlist.......played by a fat guy, a bald guy and 2 other guys who look losers from the Reject Outpost.........there hasn't been as Rock and Roll a record as this in quite a while in its evocation of unemployment, burgers, late nights, beer and hookers
* Kings of Leon were always terrible
* Jeff Tweedy is not just playing Dad Rock - for 20 years now btw - he has become the dad bod equivalent of Dad Rock.....doesn't look like he showers a lot.........may not own a comb......

Here's one, Metal Machine Music is good. Like imagine how punk rock and cool it would be if after all the hype and speculation about the song titles Tortured Poets Department was just 16 tracks of amps overloading. Taylor Swift would never
